Input for Merrit/Kamloops lake for kids
« on: January 06, 2012, 07:25:46 PM »

After many years of fishing for the hard fish, I find myself at square one again. My young son (3 1/2 years) has been asking to catch trout. We have been hitting the bullheads off White Rock and catfish in Como lake hard all summer. Unfortunately, my "square one" thirty-five years ago is just not what used to be (fishing worms in the Kettle River near Beaverdale isn't even legal) and he's not ready for long winter days steelheading and not quite ready to spend hours watching a chronie line.

I fondly remember trolling flatfish and doc spratleys in lakes out of tin boat with my father so I was thinking an early summer thing. I am looking for:

- A near Merrit/Kamloops lakes with lots of small, eager fish
- Rentable cabins so we have the option of a "nap" after a few hours of fishing or avoid inclement weather.
- Can be a bumpy road in but not a hour of digging and winching
- Family suitable/safe
-can be rustic

These aren't the criteria I would normally be looking for but life changes and I welcome any insight or ideas. I'll be leaving the centerpins and spey rods at home and bringing a couple of closed-faced "Buzz Light-Year rods, beef jerky, and Pringles chips.

If you know places that might meet my needs, let me know.

Cheers

If you can be more specific about the time of year you plan to go there, maybe some of us could give you a pointer or two.
Elevation is everything.

That said, you probably can't go wrong with Chataway Lake mid July through August.

The place I tok my kids was to Surrey Lake, but we did not fish Surrey we went around Surrey to Sussex. We would take a canoe in and paddle around the lake dragging wedding bands and worms. The kids had a ball, they still talk about it to this day and they are 26 and 29. They would get fish after fish. There were days when they would ask to stop they were so tired of catching Rainbows. The largest I have seem is about 12 inches but there are lots of them. Went back a few years ago for a few hours and had a ball. Stay at the cabins at Surrey Lake, reasonable prices and fishing can be good in Surrey also.

Mile High resort on Face lake. Cabins from fish camp style to large log houses. Lots of small trout for the kid's to catch and a bit of a playground area. When I took my boys there, the fish were not to hard to get trolling a pumpkin head fly. I'm sure they have a website.

Sorry Milo, I did say early summer, but that can be a lot of different things. Early to mid -July. I also thought about Chataway and Face. I didn't know much about Sussex.

A second vote for Face/Paska.  The resort is called Mile-High. In early July I had the kids into tons of small, easy fish; even let them flog with the chirons and they caught tons just holding the indicator next to the boat.  Great place to get them into fly fishing or trolling and nice and close to home too.

Tranquille is an easy lake to fish. Walloper is probably the best sorta lake for just fish but no facilities

chataway.  surrey/sussex if it opens this year.  walloper.  lac le jeune.  paradise.  hatheume.  pimainus.  loon.  these all have cabins etc.

but you could also just tow up a trailer to a larger lake like nicola and hook up at one of the rv parks and troll around for rainbows and kokanee.  even char or burbot take bait at times.

Go to Blue lake just north of Boston Bar!!!

You can catch fish from a boat, or practically ANY place from shore.

The fish are not big, but I have been there a few times with friends that have smaller kids, and I can tell you that they ALL caught at least 30-50 fish in 2 days!!! The average size of the fish are in the 10-14" range with some getting as large a 16, but that would be a REAL BIG one.

Good camping, even a few cabins, check out this link;

Thanks for input. That Blue lake is a candidate, certainly closest from LML. Is there still a lodge/resort at Glimpse? Face looks good too!

Red and white bobber with earthworms, here I come! I imagine a chronie soaked under a red and white bobber wouldn't be conceptually that much different from what I do now anyway.

Cheers
