Fly fishing with egg patterns
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:06:41 PM »

Now that the salmon season is over I was just wondering if now might be a good time to go after bull or cutthroat trout with egg or roe patterns.  I was thinking about the Stave or the Squamish systems.

Any thoughts on this?

I was out on the stave a few years back to try for some cutties, they were jumping all over the place, unfortunately, out of my casting range. I was fishing egg patterns but ceased to catch anything. I saw a few other fly fishermen near the toilet bowl area. I think this was in February or January, i forget ;)

Squamish system is best around the end of january for really big bulls and dollies. I have been getting the odd dolly out there and got a huge bull trout a few weeks back but it wont get really good until january. cant wait until then, for now its on to ice fishing....flesh patterns outfished everything for me by miles. brown striped rabbit fur will get you into fish for sure.

Thanks much for the info.

I have an opportunity to get out this weekend so I might just have a go anyway.   Derek, I had never actually heard of flesh patterns until you mentioned them -  I just looked them up and I can see what the pattern looks like.  I don't tie my own flies but I will see if I can find some flesh patterns at Army & Navy or one of those and try them out.  According to an article I read the drift needs to be as natural as possible when using these. (Took a look at the Stave two weeks ago and it was chock full of dead and dying Salmon so it certainly makes sense to use that pattern there.)   This is the link to that article:

This one was for Alaska fly fishing but I am sure the same principle applies here.  Another thing they mentioned, that you may know about, was maggot patterns could work well too because the Salmon carcasses get loaded with these critters - ever tried anything like that?

I will definitely be keeping January in mind as well

Yes, now is the time to fish both egg and flesh flies. Infact, I have been fishing them for almost two months now, ever since the salmon started dropping their eggs. I find fishing both egg flies and pegged trout beads can be very effective for trout/char behind spawning salmon. In some situations you can even sight fish for trout/char that are greedily hovering below salmon  ;)  I fish with indicators most of the time, however you can fish egg patterns without indicators. Flesh patterns can be effect when fished with sink tips both swinging and dead drifted.

Here are a few results of fishing egg type flies  ;D

Wow! Amazing pictures.  I am relatively new to all of this and I can only dream of results like that  :o

If the weather's not too prohibitive I will be heading out to the Stave this morning.  Not sure I am really expecting that much but its going to be a chance to cut my teeth on fishing egg/flesh patterns.

I did not find much in the way of flesh pattern flies at Army&Navy but I did find some white and a kind of off color white wool that might imitate that  - I imagine flesh does not have much form so I am thinking tying the right color should be all I need to do.

Thanks for all the info and I will let you know how it goes.  (There were certainly a lot of dead Salmon on the Stave a few weeks ago so there should be a lot of flesh floating about in the water - yuk! nasty stuff.)

Well, I got out to the Stave last Sunday and I was the only one there - everything white and frikkin cold too.  No more Salmon left, eagles everywhere, very peaceful but the fishing was slow - not sure if this is a particularly good time to get out.   All the same, worth getting out even if I did get skunked.
