Title: What kinda rod should i get....
Post by: jettabambino on February 07, 2006, 10:20:57 PM
Ok.. here is my story...

i have used the same Drift Rod for quite some time now.. I have caught everything from coho's to springs on it and everthing in between... My fishing buddies have complained though that they think its way to stiff and way to heavy.... what do you guys reccomend.. I dont want to spend alot of money but am open for suggestions.... i use a level wind and may be getting a pin soon enough... I fish the capilano, seymour , squamish and sometimes the vedder...

Thanks for your help

i am not sure what i use now.... I think its a Berkley.... its to stiff.. i never feel the fish take the bait..its always just seeing the float... and BB ing is really tough as there is very little finess.

as i said above i am targeting mainly Coho's and other salmon...

I'll say an Fenwick HMX 10'5 rated 10-20lb. Ive caught huge whites to coho on this rod. Love it but dont use it anymore its my back up for my sage 2106b. The sage is a little more money but great for cohos and smaller springs. Hopefully ill hook into a steel with it!!

Stryker 1264F is an exceptional rod. Light weight, good flex, a very sensitive tip.

Frontier STR1263C
10'6" 12-20 lb test
~$280

Great rod, flexes nicely with a small pink, but has the backbone to turn a decent chum, I was using 12 lb test.

I used to use the trophy that was mentioned earlier, very nice rod, costs about $100, maybe a bit less. Another fine rod for the money, used it for a season, turned many a coho and chum on it. It was the first levelwind my dad ever used, and he seemed to like it.

I recommend Trophy XL for a good sensitive rod at an affordable price.  I use a TCS6115C 11'6" Custom Series 10-20lb medium power.  You can feel everthing with this rod and it has a nice bend to it when playing anything from a coho to a spring.  The rod tosses pencil lead well and will load up to 4oz but I'd say 3oz  and less is ideal.  For the Cap and Seymour you may prefer the one Fish Assasin suggested but I've gotten away with using the 11'6".  I'm getting a 9' shimano Clarus  to pair up with my new low profile daiwa for those rivers once I find a store that actually has the model I'm looking for.  The Clarus comes with a limited lifetime warranty and only costs about $100 bucks but the longest rod they make is a 9'. The Trophy rod I recommended costs about $120.

jettabambino, you're based in North Van right? Check out Highwater Tackle (itosh can provide the address and direction), or Anglers West on Broadway (just east of Cambie). If you are adventurous, Berry's Bait and Tackle in Richmond (Just east of No. 6 Road and Westminster Hwy) has a good selection of rods. If you ever head out to the Vedder River, take the Whatcom Exit and stop at Reaction Fly and Tackle, Terry (he reads the posts here often) will help you out.

Another HMX fan here. Strong blanks, reliable rod, decent price.
Searun Fly & Tackle carry them.
I have a HMX fly and drift rod as part of my collection and they have stood up to many fish and so far so good.
