Title: Buntzen Lake
Post by: RainbowMan on February 07, 2006, 06:49:40 PM
Has anybody tried Buntzen lake since November?

If yes, how was the fishing and what technique did you use? Where is a good spot?

Ciao

Hello I live about 5 minutes from buntzen. Fish it quit often. About 2 weeks ago I pulled a nice 11-13 inch rainbow trolling. If you are fishing from shore try using floating power eggs with a 3-4 foot leader and 1/2 ounce weight. That always works. Or use the originall bobber and worm. In the summer you will catch lots of squas using that technique. If in boat troll flies (they arent to pickie...anything will work..leaches, spratleys ect). Try trolling in front of the island or way at the other side of the lake.

Thanks a lot.

No, I don't have a boat. The last time I fished from the dock but I just pulled a rainbow after two hours :-[ :-\

Is the north-east shore a better spot?

I have to say though that fishing is rather slow this time of year. April is when it starts to really pick up. Anyway, good luck if you decide to give it a go.

Hey Roe Kid, haven't been here in a while. After the initial information I got on this boards I had a lot of catching up to do and came to the conclusion that I would like to start my first BC fishing trip on the Butzen lake.

As I have seen the lake is quit large and thus where would you recomend that I should start looking for a decent spot on that lake? I fish from the shore and with spinning gear.

Thanks for any advice you could give me.

Huntwriter:

Buntzen Lake, like most Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley Lakes are stocked several times per year with "catchable" rainbow trout (range between 10 and 14 inches in length) by the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery. The stockings generally take place between March and September when the weather is warmer, therefore fishing tends to be slower in the winter months in these lakes. Each stocking, depending on the size of the lake, ranges between 500 to 2000 fish.

In the past, we've had success fishing the eastern shoreline of the lake from a boat. There are several access points along that side of the lake where you can fish from if you do not have a boat. Three methods can be used to target these rainbow trout:

There are also lakes that are closer to you with good shore access as well. Mill Lake in Abbotsford is one. The lake tends to be warmer than others so maybe fish would be more willing to bite. You can fish from shore just about anywhere on this lake.

HW in the same area as Buntzen is Sasamat Lake (also stocked) Sasamat has a floating bridge that goes across the bottem end of the lake, where all the fishermen sit. I've seen people out on Sasamat in the fall and winter, dunno if anyone catches anything in the winter tho. Other than trout and crayfish I dont know what else is in Sasamat.

I tried Buntzen yesterday. It was very slow. Nobody could catch anything.
I did float fishing and used shrimp.

I also tried Sasamat with the same bait and just pulled a 10 ft rainbow. Very slow fishing condition there.

Hello everybody,

I really appologize for this. I meant 10 inch.  :-\ :( I was meaning it's been a waste of time fishing there  :'(

I'm sure you'll accept my apology for this. I'm a metric person!

Cheers,

Just to let you know:

Lafarge Lake (Behind coquitlam centre) is much better than Buntzen. A friend of mine caught two rainbows and one bull head yesterday evening. Nice fishing condition and easier access.

Although Buntzen Lake gets a larger stocking everytime compared to other lakes, its size and depth can fluctuate the fishing result quite a bit. Same with Sasamat Lake. It's smaller, but just as deep.

Remember, the lakes were last stocked in November, so fishing is expected to be somewhat slow.

Lafarge is a good choice. It's a small lake, with very good shore access.

LaFarge is nice in my inflatables. paddle out, and toss my little 4-prong anchor out, and dont move from my spot. If I aint fishing, chances are I'm sleeping.

I've fished Lafarge on several occasions (from shore only) and had  quite a bit of fun!  Bows between 10 - 12 inches and a 9 1/2 lb carp.  Good fun, relatively easy fishing.
If you don't mind fishing from a boring looking bank, try the main road side.  If you'd prefer something slightly more natural, go to the opposite bank and try near the outlet, casting out a fair way to get over the shallow shelf.  Powerbait eggs (orange and chartreuse) with a 3-4 feet leader off of a small lead weight.

Tight lines

I went to Butzen Lake and it was as predicted very slow, had only listless nibbles never enough to set the hook. I guess with the lake been that deep the water stays cold a long time.

Having said that my gear was a bit one the heavy side for trout fishing on a lake. So the mind reader my wife is she went out and got me a perfect lake trout fishing rod and real for 2lbs to 6lbs weight line. So guess what. I have to back out this week and visit some more lakes you have mentioned here to break that new rod and real in.

I will keep y'all updated on the progress.

huntwriter, some good fishing will happen very soon. These lakes mentioned above are usually stocked by the staff of Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery starting around the second or third week of March, that's only a month away.

This year, the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC has partnered up with this website and expect to see updated stocking information in the fishing reports section (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/index.html) on a regular basis.

Bone - How much are these Sevylor fish hunter rubber boats and are they safe if I accidentally hook the boat instead of a fish.

Currently I am looking into buying a aluminum Jon Boat but a rubber boat would be a lot easier to transport.

They are fairly cheap, a 8ft goes for around $169. I would try to go bigger, the 9 or 12 ft size if you want to add another person along. I added a folding wood floor to make it more rigid. They are pretty safe for fishing, it's built with a 5 hull chamber system so you don't have to worry about sinking. If you are really worried about putting a hook in the  boat, you can buy a camo boot that goes over it. They are able to put a 2hp engine on the back, with the proper motor mount.

If you have money to spend, I would put my money in a Zodiac inflatable, which go for $1000-$3000, or stop by the inflateable boat shop on Main and Terminal and buy a 8ft inflatable punt w/ wood floors for $800.

Where are you getting a Sevylor for $169? I paid $500 for mine 3yrs ago. and my Dad got his Tahiti on sale (off season) for $329 2 yrs ago. (both are over 10')

Check out Army and Navy they have the 8ft for under $200, but I know that the 9ft is a little bit more... around $240. The 12ft is the most expensive its in the $400 range.

Thanks for the offer Reservoir Dog but I am looking for a boat with ellbow room and to put stuff down without falling over it. A kayak has it's uses but I.M.H.O. not for fishing.

Thanks Bone for your answer. You got me interested and I will look into it some more. You say you even can hang a motor onto it, that's cool. And yes, I do agree with you a 9 to 12 ft boat would be a lot better. I like to stretch my legs and have some ellbow room. I get easily highly irritated in small places where everything is cramped together.

One last question Bone, do you know if the Army and Navy in Langley has these boats? Like I said in another posting, I am new to BC and still have a lot of scouting to do. Thanks.

I am not sure about the Army and navy in Langley. Iam sure they would be able to tell you if you called. I know they have them in the New West store.
