An 8wt is usually recognized by most as a good all around salmon/steelhead rod.  I use a 7wt for most salmon, and a 9140 for chum, springs, and steelhead.

I need one chum would be fun on the fly. My 6wts just dont cut it id overplay them :P

8 is plenty for chum.
