Title: Favorite River
Post by: Big Steel on October 18, 2005, 04:49:41 PM
With the bulk of the salmon runs now returning to our river systems, I was just wondering what everyones thoughts were about their favorite rivers??? What do you feel about how your favorite river is doing??  What do you think of the returns that the rivers are getting??

Favourite river is the Harrison, but it wasn't an option, Chehalis was the next best thing, although it too is a beautiful river, that is quickly becoming one of my favourite.

I'd have to vote for Harrison as well.  So many options and I love it in pink years.

Yeah sorry I thought about the Harrison, but I thought that 6 rivers was good enough for now!!!!  Maybe I should have done one more option!!!! ;D ;D

Under used streams kill fisheries too!

One stream I fished as a kid now runs through a culvert under a subdivion and two others run in culverts under under industrial parks.  No anglers, No voice, No protest = No fish. 100 salmon & steelhead returned to those small streams anually when I fished them as a kid; not any more. Just think how many 100's of streams & fish have gone that way in the GVRD.

I grew up around the "Salmon" River.  I hear you man.

great question but not an easy one to answer. i like this secret river in the caribou where i can float down 30 kms and dry fly for up to 10lb rainbows in the summer. the thompson river gets my vote for steelhead and large rainbows, vedder for fishing for quantity and proximity, fraser river because of its many different species and proximity.
another river i haven't seen talked about much but i know has a lot of fishing opportunities is the birkenhead river.

I know the one you are talking about "36 inch rainbows" you gota love that river, looks like someone pulled it out of Montana and transplanted it here.

Birkenhead R. is that the one close to Pemberton?
Title: Re: Favorite River
Post by: fishingbuddha on October 25, 2005, 09:24:45 PM
yep. havent' fished it tons but have gone spring salmon fishing, dolly and rainbow fishing on the fly and i also hear there is an excellent coho fishery there.

just watch out for big bears. i once had a bear stare me down across the river. probably the biggest black bear i have ever seen (about the size of a volkswagon) needless to say we never slept in the tent. actually that same day a cub tried to swim at me from across the river and we also saw a huge one feeding on some berries on the way in to our camping area before we encountered the one staring us down.

i guess all the bear poop and bear tracks should have been a warning.

little late getting into this thread but my least favorite in salmon season has become the vedder, i will not fish it outside of steelhead season.
my favorite is the size of the vedder but is actually a creek up east harrison, an amazing stretch of water that is the most gorgeous flow I have ever fished. Not high numbers but if the timing is right, coho can be had, steelhead in season, plenty of big my friend dollies and my favorite species of all , searun cutthroat.

Speaking of steelhead, I would think that the Thompson would be the best steely river!!!!  But that is because of it's history!!!!  After that I would have to say the Stamp, Gold, Vedder, and Chehalis in that order.  This is only my opinion, I could be wrong!!!!  Btw did I miss any other good Steelhead Rivers in Bc, besides the ones up north???? ;D ;D
