Well yesterday i managed to hook my first salmon on the fly it was awesome, great feeling ;D.. anyways i have a 6 wt and it was pretty stressed out and i was more worried about the rod than fighting the fish... so my question is for salmon what fly rod would u recommend (im thinking 8wt?) and if u can give me a generalized price for a cheap set up real and rod combo for beginner so nothing too fancy but that will last me a while, cus i really wanna get out this weekend and hopefully chuck more feathers... thnx for the help.. cheers

6wt is fine for pinks but for coho and chum an 8wt is ideal.

It really depends on your target species. If you're targeting chums I would go with an 8 wt.

Well i want one for coho pinks and chum and maybe some steelhead.. so thats why im guessing an 8 wt should be fine? ???...
what about prices?

Best to check out your local tackle shop. I've read that Temple Forks are decent rods which won't put you into the poor house.

Got a Dragonfly for X-mas last year (it's a 5wt) a littel light for what you may need but a good rod to case with. Just over a $100.

An 8w is a good all around for Salmon & Steel. Make sure it has good backbone, you probably want a solid fast action. Dragons are often the best bang for your buck, but some time you can luck out on a sale. Call Randy at Hatch Match'r and ask him what he has on special. If you want to targe Spring along with the other Salmon types I suggest you move up to a 9W. Your 6w is fine for pinks.
