Title: Pinks Opening
Post by: searun17 on August 25, 2005, 03:15:23 PM
If it is any consolation the pinks are opening above mission august 26 00:01,4 per day limit using selective methods as not to target the sockeye.

No one. :)

There isn't a TAC (total allocated quota) available for commercial and recreational from the returning stock, so anglers are requested to practice selective fishing methods to avoid those fish as they are not for us.

Rod you are right, according to DFO these fish are not for us,here is a quote from the statement just released."DFO established a 15% harvest rate cieling on late run sockeye,it is anticipated that the late run objective has been accounted for in late run sockeye already harvested in test fisheries and in first nations fisheries and in  fisheries to address outstanding requirements."I dont agree with the way DFO has handled the sockeye fishery, with all thier concerns about the numbers of fish and survival rate you think that all parties invoved would see thier fishing opportunities cut back.It is not right for some to fish while others sit and watch.

They mean to use fishing methods that would minimize the chance of hooking a sockeye salmon, which is closed for retention. ie. spinning for them, float fishing for them, etc.

It's unbelievable how people can be so fixated to the sockeye fishery and so angry when an opening is not granted. You've lost two weeks of sockeye fishery, but you've just been granted with a pink fishery that we have been asking for weeks! The entire Fraser River is opened for pink and chinook salmon fishing, coho and pinks will start to emerge in the Vedder soon, what more do people want?

DFO has a mandate to allocate the quotas based on what has been decided by the government. If you feel that you have been unfairly treated, write and send in your concerns to have the laws changed.

My interest is in the well being of the fish stocks. I think the FN fishery has flaws that need to be fixed and will continue to do so by pressuring DFO to make sure all fisheries are properly managed.

You can bring home 3 pinks and 1 spring and not have to deal with the sockeye crowds.  What more can you ask for? and when their smoked they taste almost as good!! Bring it on!!!

I'm totally stoked about the pinks.  Its about the fun of catching them not the taste, I let them all go.  But you will never get such a great oppertunity to catch salmon on the fly- its a blast.  Most guys use a sinking tip or full sink line, but try a floating line with an indicator and the fly just one to two feet under the surface.  No snags!

I agree.  Flyfishing for pinks is a wonderful experience.  They're very hard fighting fish and they will readily take at well presented fly.  I had a blast on the Squamish and was sad to see it close (although I can't argue with the reasons why).  Now I'm stoked about the opportunity for some action in the Fraser/Harrison area!  It's an odd year - so enjoy it while you can!

Last time the pink run came in I saw alot taken by the flyfishers in the lower river, just need to find a place where you can cast, I even watched a stray dog catch a pink that got a little too close to shore. Ive also invested in a 7wt flyrod in hopes of catching pinks on the tidal Fraser. Should be loads of fun in a week or two, just hope I can get a little better with my casting before the mayhem starts.

hey Pecan Sam, yes I"m back.  Still daydreaming about that last Vedder spring trip with Rob. I've got some amazing fish pictures that are on film but I've got to get them put on disc so I can show them here.  Those fish were sooo chrome.   As for flys, I just go to the experts at Micheal and Young on Broadway at Birtch st. They always have some pink muddlers or pink woolybuggers made up.  This year I'll have some home made flys tied up.  But if you fish a floating line with an indicator just tie some bright pink wool into a bait loop.

I dread the day when chums becomes the anglers' new gold.  This will happen when the market values of other more desired salmon goes up and FN wants them too. ;)
