Title: Terminal tackle set up. re-splitshot.
Post by: sassyboy on November 26, 2004, 06:05:17 PM
I asked this question on another forum, but I am interested in more feedback.
What is your favorite way to use split shot, I normaly have around three piecies on mainline between float and swivel then I have a tag eng off of the swivel where I put an additional two to three pieces (depending on conditions) that way if I get snagged the couple of pieces on the tag end slip off so as not to lose everything. I then have a 18"-24" leader with presentation.
However my friend fishes exclusively with five or six pieces of shot on his leader and none on his mainline, his first piece is around 16" back from hook and is spaced equally back to the swivel. What are your takes on these set ups.
thanx

On my main line I put 2 pieces just above my swivel and than 2 more on my leader.

Your friends idea is unusual. You want the splitshot on your mainline so you can have a length of lighter leader that has less visibility to the fish. Your friend may be one of those guys who drags the bottom with his wieghts. He may reason that if he gets a bad snag he can break it off below the mainline. I think your method is excellent, and if you drift just above the bottom snagging a rock is a non-issue. AND you won't be flossing fish.   BP

its not unusual to have your split shot on you leader...almost everyone i know that uses shot use them on their leader...i use them on my leader unless i have to use really light leader like 8lb.but most of the time iam using 12 to 15lb leaders steelhead fishing.

Whoooa, 12-15lb leader!! You must be going after the Thompson brutes.  My mainline is 12lb, my leader is 8lb floro carbon.

i fish 20 in the T..i will use 12lb main and 8 lb leader if iam fishing the stamp cause it makes a diff there but every where else it does not seem to matter unless you are fishing for fish that have already been caught or fished over...i have caught lots of steelhead in crystal clear water on big heavy gear.

When using split shots, you should remember to always put a swivel to prevent the weight from moving down to the hook.

I found that when I pinch any type of weight, whether it be split or pencil lead, it weakens my mainline for a better chance of breaking.  I usually leave a tag end when I tie on my swivel so I can pinch it on there.  Also if you do snag up it pulls out nicely.

I agree that pinching on split shot can weaken your line, thats why I'm surprised that people are putting it on thier leader. But it looks like its been working for these guys, what ever you feel confident with right.

I tried fishing my friends way up at the Thompson 2 weeks ago,
but could not get a feel for it and was not confident using his method meanwhile he hooked and landed six Steelies over the two & a half days fishing, all hooked perfectly, what a fisherman  :D
He hooked the one pictured below then passed the rod off to me to play and Land my first ever Thompson buck. I'm the guy in the middle.

Troy what size split shot do you use, how long is the leader from the hook to the swivel? I'm not gonna copy your method as I'm set in my ways.  But I just want to visualize it. Sounds like you guys had a good time on the Thompson, I stuck to the coho fishing myself.
