Been watching a lot of nonsense of Youtube during the pandemic and wanted a place to share some videos I've enjoyed and see what you're watching these days!

Of late, I've been Covid-confined in Singapore and living vicariously through www.Youngbloods.co (for merch) and the YouTube channel for YBS Youngbloods (Brady Moss). There are 250 videos on his channel, and he's become an Ozzie internet celebrity with his mix of spearfishing (his mates and he are seriously good), fishing (OK skill sets), eye candy (all PG, but tasteful young women from time-to-time), his faithful dog, free seafood cooking & eating and lots and lots of toys (high end boats, jet skis, dirt bikes, 4WD and even a new house).
I just re-read what I typed and it sounds awful. I love fish, diving and fishing and the crystal clear waters of remote NW Western Australia are the real stars of the show: tropical fish, reefs, whales, sharks, rays, sea snakes . . . it's really about the critters.

Over the last couple of years I have enjoyed watching Ian Bain's series of Atlantic Salmon videos. Beyond a go pro on his head there is little hi-tech about these. Bain fishes regularly from mid-January to November in his home rivers in Scotland. I think he a member of a club with access to the Tay and gets access to a number of other rivers. No doubt being relatively famous helps Generally he posts a video or 2 every week.Don't expect a lot of fish to the beach.

Here's a cool one from Pioneer Pauly today. He often snorkels creeks on Vancouver Island looking for small gold nuggets. Today's video he takes scuba tanks and dives down into a deep river hole. Lots of fish shots, starting around 7:30 in the video. I was struck by the number of fish just a couple feet below the surface, as well as the number right underneath the white water at the bottom of the falls. I wouldn't have expected to see them hanging out so casually in such turbulent water! He's had Kitty from FWR on as a guest a couple of times too.

It's a sort McLhuan-esque fame. He is relatively famous for being so. Understand?
Besides that he is an old fart fixture in the Scottish Salmon angling community plus developed a relatively famous eponymous fly pattern; The Ian B special.

It's a podcast about a guy who breaks into a museum and steals millions of dollars worth of extinct bird specimens in order to finance his Victorian fly-tying habit. The podcast is based on a book, The Feather Thief. Apparently there's a black market for feathers from rare and extinct birds. The feathers are used to craft ornate, impractical fly patterns that were in vogue back before all these birds were hunted to extinction. There are divisions within the elite fly-tying world (of which I'm not a part) about whether using stolen and/or endangered species is morally wrong. The podcast is about 55 minutes long... after you click on the link, just press the big play button to the left of the title. No fancy podcast software required!

No, the videos are fine! Not sure what I said that gave you that impression but that wasn't the intended meaning :P
The guy with the freediving channel posted on the Facebook group that he was going to dive the cable pool. I sent him directions to the canyon instead so he wouldn't get snagged at the cable pool. He dove the canyon yesterday and will post a video at some point. He messaged back that he saw a few salmon, found tons of lures, and there were places where they swam down to 10m deep and still couldn't even see the bottom with a flashlight! This was about 40m upstream of Houlgate Creek. Crazy. I'm really excited to see what it looks like down there... crazy to think that the river is deeper than it is wide in that area!

Awesome! Amazing how much wood there is down there to snag. So much river treasure.... the fish didn't seem too bothered by his presence!

Subbed to the Vedder guy. His awkwardness on camera is endearing ;D I'm interesting in watching any underwater videos of any local rivers! Still waiting on the Cap video from the freediving guy.
I subscribed to the Scottish guy and finally saw him catch a fish in his latest video! I feel a kinship with him because he gets skunked as often as I do 8)

This one showed up on my video feed today and was filmed within the last few days.
His videos are about fishing on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. They mostly feature walk in loch (lake) fishing on isolated water found after a long walk over the heath. There is little or no walking trails and he uses a GSP to avoid getting lost. The lakes have wild brown trout often of a good size.
There is also some salmon and sea trout fishing on the Island for which he has a few videos. I get a kick out of some of the euphemistic expressions such as a river in low water described as "being on it's bones".

I know I've posted several of his but they keep getting better! Two incredible sections: one spearfishing around Gabriola (starts at 5:00 mark in the video) and he's swimming through the bull kelp and the sun is shining down through the water... just gorgeous! He also spears some rockfish and half the time I couldn't spot them before he fired. They're so well camouflaged!
Also a section where he swims with the spawning pink salmon in Campbell River (at 10 minute mark). At one point he's at the bottom of the river, filming the underside of the school of hundreds/thousands of pinks. So pretty. With all the issues around fishing for salmon, these videos make me want to learn to dive and give up fishing. Would be easier to commune with the fish, and I could sell all the lures I find back to the fishing addicts to support my new freediving hobby 8)

Petr Herman Adventures on Youtube takes suggestions from the comments on places to snorkel. He's already hit up 3 or 4 high-traffic fishing spots on the Vedder, usually around sunset when the anglers have all gone. Several people have asked him to snorkel the train bridge and I wouldn't be surprised to see it soon!

If by "give away" you mean that he tells you where he is fishing, I've watched a number of vids and rarely hear him say where he is at.

I give room for naive enthusiasm. We all started out as learners, but my graciousness wears thin with two adults who have a YouTube channel.

I hesitate posting the links b/c the don't need additional audience until their behaviour improves, but their channel needs more than just me being a raving lunatic.
Ben and Dean: if you are out there, do better! There are many helpful anglers who will show you better ways to land and release fish unharmed. Sometimes you have to sacrifice your ego and knowing how much a fish weighs, or showing it to the camera, for the welfare of the fish.

The FWR Army (er...positive peer pressure) :) showed up. The one video has more dislikes than likes and got pulled. Some commenters had their comments deleted, mine included. (Ralph was very direct, and rightly so)
I don't want to watch their videos, jack up their views and have them marvel at how popular they are, but these "gentlemen" need online pressure to start behaving differently.

actually they have deleted that video. It was posted about a year ago and in videos they did later last year, fish handling was better. Still can't stand to see that one fellow stick his finger down the throat of a 8 inch wild cutty. Can't they buy a pair of foreceps?
I don't think this is at all unusual practice for people who start fishing for trout and salmon with little experience or awareness of what they need to know. Sad but true. Lot's of small wild trout, steelhead and salmon die as a result.

I refuse to believe that this is a common practice when there is so much educational content made available across social media. I also think these two are not as intellectually well. Not saying that to be insulting, but just based on what I'm seeing in several videos. Terrible considering the number of incidental kills is very likely to put a dent on the populations especially when fishing in some pretty ecologically sensitive areas.

I actually did not say it was common practice. Rod perhaps your beliefs are partially influenced by only fishing in the finest places with the finest company.
I'd like to clarify the comments I made. I pointed out that 2 of those cutthroat were almost certainly dead. That cutthroat in Fraser Valley streams don't add up to more than a few thousand. I suggested they might think of not fishing for them with bait and when they released them they keep the fish in the water. I also directed them to the Provincial Synopsis and pointed out where they could find the recommendations regarding releasing their catch.
