Why would a fishing boat be drift netting the lower portion of the Fraser River in from of New Westminster waterfront? Head scratcher to me...

Eulachon? I know there was just an opening down by the Columbia, I wonder if they are running in the Fraser now? Is there a FN opening for them, or a test fishery?

that's usually in the last half of April. The Fraser eulachon run has been in real trouble for 30 years or more and I don't know if even FNs get a consistent chance to take some..

They did last year. The run was decent enough for DFO to allow for a harvest

There will be a few spring chinookmheading to far away tributaries this time of year.

There was a boat out, downstream of the skytrain bridge in New West, setting a net at apprx 9:30 am Thursday Feb 20th. Too far away to see any results.

There are no FSC openings on the Fraser listed this week, last week or this year. Why are people sure it is an FN boat? I also wonder why people just don't call a local DFO and express your concern? If there is a boat out setting nets that they are aware of I'd guess they would let you know.

There was a common thing known to all the guys who bar fished the Fraser their whole lives.
"There are Springs in the Fraser 12 months of the year"
Is that true today? Maybe, but not to the extent it used to be.
Growing up, there was never a day of the year fishing on the river that we would be overly surprised if we got a Chinook.

It seems a little early, but I would hazard a guess that this may be a band member who, with the band's consent, is fishing for a single Spring salmon for the purpose of the First Salmon Ceremony.
In Stolo and many other indigenous people's culture who live along the Fraser, the return of the salmon (signified by the first fish caught and shared with the tribe) is quite significant to their way of life, and would be similar to a religious festival, such as Easter of Christmas for Catholics.
