Title: Chilliwack's All About Fishing and Used Tackle Sale, March 9th 2019
Post by: Rodney on January 14, 2019, 08:13:41 PM
Chilliwack's All About Fishing will be happening again, on Saturday March 9th, from 9am to 3pm. This is a free event. Here is the website which provides a brief overview of the event for now, more details will be added:

http://www.fishingwithrod.com/all-about-fishing/

New this year will be Fraser Valley Salmon Society's used fishing tackle sale. We are aiming for having thirty tables available so if you'd like to take one, please email me at info@fishingwithrod.com. It will be $40/table this year. Half of the money will go to the event cost, while the other half will go to FVSS.

There is also a Facebook event page: https://www.facebook.com/events/505162653301580/

I will be looking for volunteers to help out, so contact me if interested.

I look forward to see you there!

This year's event is sponsored by Tourism Chilliwack, Gibbs Delta Tackle, Fred's Custom Tackle, Chilliwack Dart and Tackle, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and my website. Each has put in $1,000 (except Tourism Chilliwack, which has provided $2,000) so there's enough to run a really good event.

* In the conservation/stewardship section of the event, so far the following groups have committed to be there:

Fisheries and Oceans Canada C&P
Chilliwack Salmon Hatchery
Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition
Watershed Watch Salmon Society
Fraser River Sportfishing Alliance
Ducks Unlimited
Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society

* 7 tables have been reserved for the used fishing tackle sale.

Please have a giant banner set up explaining the evils of LOW-HOLEING and how not, to do it. The Chilliwack river gets worse every year with this sort of behavior and needs to be addressed...………..again.

HAHA...Touché. However, I'm sure there would be a brawl....

I'm being serious. Angling education is a focus at this event, so if there is a need for that awareness which you've suggested, then you're welcome to put together a table with information etc and show people how it should be done.

And why would there be a brawl? It's a family event and everyone attending it either wants to learn or share what they already know.

BC Federation of Fly Fishers will once again be there with at least 10 members helping out the fly casting workshops, both adult and kids fly casting. Peter Caverhill has developed this great idea for teaching kids how to fly cast while keeping it fun. I'll have an area designated for this so be sure to bring your kids out for it.

Fred's Custom Tackle is also sponsoring the fly fishing section of the event and there'll be lots of features that you don't want to miss. Fred and I are working on these so there'll be a bit of everything for both novice and advanced fly fishers.

Easy to point out problems and complain, only a few won't walk away when asked to solve the problems. ;)

Hope you can take up Rodney's offer as it would be good for you to explain to others what you are speaking about, especially young anglers.

Another update. It looks like I'll be setting up a big screen with projector at this year's event. I'm slowly putting together a line-up of scheduled live presentations. Nick most likely will be doing one on Chilliwack River steelhead techniques so you definitely do not want to miss that. We are also going to be showing segments from the Fly Fishing Film Tour throughout the day, Mariko Izumi is going to be hosting it. I'd say that's going to be a pretty good day for a free event. ;)

Rodney,
thank you for all the effort you put into events such as this!
It's great to see such enthusiasm for participating in all the fishing related projects in Chilliwack.
As a Chilliwack resident for the past 43 years I was happy that you finally made the move to "God's Country"

People should check this out if they get the chance. I watched the full F3T showing this year, and it was very good. Cinematography was top notch for all the films. If they show the tarpon one, do not miss it.

UPDATE!

Live presentations are almost finalized. I can tell you that Nick Basok will be doing a presentation on Vedder River Winter Steelhead Fishery. He'll be joined by Dean Worrall from the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery who will be providing info on the hatchery steelhead program.

Jordan Oelrich from Interior Fly Fishing Co. in Kamloops will be doing a 30 minute presentation on stillwater fly fishing.

Fred Helmer will be doing a presentation on Fraser River sturgeon.

I and my co-host Kitty in the videos will be doing an interactive presentation that will be geared toward the younger audience and their parents. Our sponsors have given us lots of prizes to give away so we'll most likely be doing a fish ID game so hopefully everyone can go home with something. :) We'll also be drawing names (everyone who comes to the event will be entered) for some bigger prizes including a two night winter package at Tunkwa Lake Resort, a Moby Net, etc.

I hope all of you will be able to make it. :)

Maybe get Old Yale Brewing involved as they partnered up with Brendan Morrison of Reel West Coast fishing show and invented the Head Shaker Honey Lager beer. They had a cool event last summer of which Fred Helmer was involved with. Just a thought. Cheers

Perhaps next year. I'm not really hurting financially for this event, we have had enough fundings from this website, our sponsors to put it together (in total it costs about $7k to run it). Not sure how a local beer company could fit into a family event, but I'm always willing to explore ideas.

I will have table at the All About Fishing event. My kids will be there selling all manner of used tackle.
We have all kinds of jigs and lures for discount prices. I will also be selling some other tackle as i am doing a big clean up of all my tackle this week.
I may have a few rod and reel combos as well.

Many of the jigs and lures i'll be selling are ones that we manufactured that didnt make the cut esthetically but are often the ones I use personally as they catch fish just as well as the ones that make the grade.

Our quality control ladies just may be a little too picky :) , but that will be a good deal for those at the show.

I will be there tying jigs and talking fishing, so also pop by to see me if you have any questions.

Pretty good prizes for sure. ;)

This is not really the same as a trade show like Tradex. This is more of a grass root community event being supported by local businesses. There are two things we're trying to accomplish here. One is to promote responsible fishing. Two is to get as many people in this community together as possible so we can all have fun, work together under one roof for a day. My hope is by doing so, over time it'll lead to better communications as we deal with all the growing challenges in fisheries across the Lower Mainland.

See you all on the 9th, it's going to be good.

Most definitely, Rod. I had a great time last year at my table. It was gratifying to meet and talk with so many people from the fishing community. The variety of fishing types present was good to see. And Armytruck, my wife was saying the same thing about the number of boats. The other thing was the lack of swag and prizes. I was happy to see the support that Rod was able to come up with for this coming weekend- draws, etc. included.

Everybody, grab a friend and come on by. My table will have about 50 years of salt and freshwater gear, as well as a framed wildlife print and a pontoon boat. The goal is to get a bunch of fishing stuff that's just sitting there off the shelf and actively used... just like its present owner.😉

Will also be taking orders for custom rod builds.

One thing there is no entry cost to attend, and usually parking is by donation only, Rod can confirm that.  My table will have mostly Maple Leaf floats get one while they last.lol

I will try to get some signed by Matthews at the Leaf game in Vancouver tonight. ;D This is a bit off topic but I am meeting Fish Assassin before the Leaf game tonight to deliver the floats he won at the contest I put together for guessing the number of steelhead caught at the Boxing Day Derby on Dec. 26.
It will be good to met him in person after all these years of trading good natured trash talk on Sports Chat

Yep admission is free, this event is made available for everyone and money should not be the factor that stops people from coming. They'll be collecting donations for parking, I'm not sure which group is doing that this year. Last year it was the food bank I think.

Had a great time- I appreciated all the opportunities go meet and talk with others in the angling community, to buy and sell gear, see owls, talk with conservation officers, Freshwater Fisheries, fly fishing instructors and authors, and many others... and all for free. A big thanks to all of the organizers and people and organizations that made it happen.

Best of all, of course, was the chance to give the gears to Leafs jersey-wearing Chris Gadsen! ;D

I hope this stays as an annual event, if for no other reason than to give those who missed the event a chance to enjoy it.

I would have posted this earlier, but I pretty much crashed as soon as I arrived home yesterday after Chilliwack's All About Fishing. The wife made fun of me when I fell asleep while sitting straight up on the dining chair during dinner. 🙄

Anyway, I cannot say thank you enough to all who came to the show yesterday. While I did most of the leg work prior to the event, it is the collective effort from many in the sport fishing and stewardship communities which has made this possible. I'd like to name every single volunteers but I simply can't, because there were over 100 people helping out yesterday!

And thank you to those who came to say hi to me, my family and my co-host Kitty. Your kind encouragements reassured us that our work is appreciated and we will continue to do better.

My vision for this event isn't just to promote sport fishing to new comers, but we need a grassroot event where this community can get together under one roof, put all the differences aside and work in a positive environment for one day. By doing so, perhaps we can finally reach the same goal, which is to revive the fisheries that have been lost over the past decade.

In the next couple of days, I'm going to be putting up a couple hundred photos on our Facebook page. Many thanks to EJ and Lorne for being the photographers at the event! If you have photos which you'd like to share, please message us or post them on the event page:

https://www.facebook.com/events/505162653301580/

Thank you again, and we'll see you next year! :)

If there is anything that should be done differently, or new ideas for next year, please let me know. I don't want to just keep running the same things every year because then people would get bored of it. I plan is to add a couple of new features to it each year and get more groups involved.
