Title: Steelhead derbies on the Chilliwack- Vedder
Post by: Dave on December 22, 2018, 01:18:32 PM
Despite what many may think about the value/ethics of steelhead fishing derbies, I would like voice my support for the 3 happening now on the Chilliwack- Vedder.

Thankyou to Chad Hammond of Chilliwack Dart and Tackle … all proceeds from the steelhead derby the store is running this year will go directly to the Chilliwack Vedder River Clean up Society.  With the increasing costs associated with the CVRCS, this will really help us.

Second, to Fred Helmer of Fred’s Custom Tackle, and Wally Hall Sr. for running the Wally Hall Jr. Memorial Derby.  All proceeds from this go to the Fraser Valley Watershed Coalition, who leverage funding and partnerships to create fish habitat. Over the years this derby has given over $20,000 to the FVWC whose projects have directly improved steelhead spawning areas.   I enter this derby and don’t even fish :o

The third and most popular is the long running annual Boxing Day derby sponsored by the Chilliwack Fish and Game Protective Association. This club is now also handing the proceeds to the FVWC, and last year gave $10,000.

So get out there, catch some fish, and support these stores.

Any guess for the number brought to the scales on the 26th. I am putting a Auston Matthews Maple Leaf Drennan up to the winner, maybe a few other experienced floats in the bag too. I will start,
 saying 6.

Seems to be a good steelhead year from what I've seen so far. Weather looks relatively good as well leading up to the day, so conditions should be ok, especially with the colder weather.

I'm going to go with 13 fish!  :o Probably a dream, but fingers crossed for a good showing.

What have you seen? I thought you lived on the island. Only two fish weighed in so far this yr.

What have you seen? I thought you lived on the island. Only two fish weighed in so far this yr.

Summer run numbers on the island and mainland were very good, exceptionally good in some places.

Chinook numbers were exceptionally good. Coho numbers were exceptionally good, and from what I've seen, winter steelhead have quite often mirrored coho numbers in my journal keeping from past years.

Also from my journals, it seems that steelhead do run on cycles. 2015 was an exceptional year, and 2012 as also very good for me. I've also seen a fairly good showing of fall runs and early winters out on the island. In short, it's an "educated guess," and high hopes based off other runs of fish from this year.

Water conditions looked good for the derby tomorrow, I made a few casts at Gwyn's Run this morning as I thought of him  and our good friendship. Gwyn  just loved the annual Boxing Day Derby and was the chairman
 of it too.. https://theprogress.newspapers.com/image/81386286/?terms=Gwyn%2BJoiner%2Bsteelhead%2Bderby

Although egg numbers are relatively consistent year to year, the numbers of juveniles released has varied because like most hatchery salmon stocks, Chilliwack steelhead have had some disease issues.
Most likely those release numbers are available if you want them.

They're available at:

Choose detailed reports, input Region 2 and Vedder-Chilliwack River.
