Title: 2018 Tidal Fraser Fishery
Post by: fic on September 08, 2018, 02:59:09 PM
So according to this notice of the salmon closure until September 27th, does it mean you can legally target coho with bait on the 27th in the Fraser?

I believe that notice is in effect through the 27th so you could use bait starting on the 28th. Also assuming they dont extend the closure with another notice later.

I saw 30 plus coho jumping in tidal part this morning. I assume it is a good year.

How do you know they were coho and not sockeye?

Usually the bait ban and closure on coho lasts into early October.

Did u see the spots and white gums? There are definitely coho out there. More than past years. But I am a little sceptical that there were 30 jumping. There are lots of sockeye out there still. Jumping everywhere with big schools. Thinking they were late. Started to feel like 2014 and 2010 when at sandheads today. I am sure they are heading up with the rain.

It would certainly be great if they were all coho. Last year's Tidal coho Fishery was pretty bad. My eye sight isn't the greatest so I can't see that far anyways. They all look the same to me 30 feet out  ;D

Coho dont do a lot of jumping in the tidal Fraser.
More likely Sockeye or Chum.

Must have been a stella day. In 20+ years targeting coho salmon in the Tidal Fraser River, I've seen less than a dozen coho jumps.

Because I know

You don't actually, just like many other subjects you've commented on.

The dates for the Tidal and Non-tidal Fraser hatchery coho salmon fishery in October have not been announced yet, but they will, hopefully soon.

More likely Sockeye or Chum.

I looked at that in terms of probabilities - coho may number in the hundreds or thousands out there, sockeye in the millions.

Coho don't jump a whole lot period (unless they are hooked) - in my experience -they will rise but it is like a head and tail rise or porpoise breech of the surface - not right out of the water.
