Update for the members here.  I found it two weeks later (Sep 16) and it was sitting right where Stratocaster dropped it!  I guess no one fishes that spot?  Brought it home, cleaned out all the sand and it's in fine working condition, and returned to the owner.  Oh - and the fishing was excellent too.
