Title: Sockeye question
Post by: dave c on August 14, 2018, 11:13:35 AM
On Sunday when cleaning one of my fish i was surprised to see that there was no milt sack or roe present. Ot was a large fish about 8lbs. Was fresh so definitely not spawned out. I wonder why. Any thoughts?

That is fascinating.  If this fish was truly without gonads, it is curious that it would still return to the river to spawn.  I had thought other sterile fish tend to stay in the ocean and grow until they die?  Did it have any external indication of sex (i.e. large head, teeth developing, hooked nose developing)?  FWIW, all 8 fish caught in our boat have been bucks this year.

A wild triploid salmon? Wow. While possible, it probably doesn't happen often in nature. (DaveB?)

Glad you got it - it found its only meaningful purpose - to be eaten.

apparently in Japan - where they have harvest-able populations of chum salmon, gender neutral salmon are highly coveted and extremely rare. They fetch astronomical prices in fish markets.

I have never seen this in well over 50 years of fishing.

It was a large bright fish. It was a great fight and i thought it might actually be a spring when bringing it in. Didnt have the beginnings of a hooked snout, so much so i grabbed a ziploc for roe before gutting it. Needless to say i was taken aback when the body cavity was void of any sexual organs

I highly doubt the fish is a triploid. Natural triploidy is a very rare phenomenon.

I have opened thousands of salmon and have never found an adult fish without gonads.  Milo nailed it - it was meant to be eaten.

What do you think it is then Rod?
Big business experimenting with sockeye sterilization for farming purposes?
A fish farm/hatchery experiment gone awry with the fish escaping the pen?

it was definitely a sockeye. After seeing empty body cavity checked to see if it was an Atlantic salmon. Sockeye for sure.

Handsome fish, but useless alive.

Not so sure. It shows a vestige of a snout. Or am I seeing things?

For what its worth the fillets were similar to sockeye, color, consistency and lacked the fatty strips ive seen on Atlantic salmon fillets in grocery store.

Here is a nice bright female I caught for comparison,  Had a tiny egg sack, The discoloration on its top half is from the Ice and where I bonked it.
