Title: Fraser Sockeye Charter Recommendations
Post by: Blood_Orange on August 11, 2018, 08:31:36 PM
My dad wants to try fishing for sockeye but also wants to escape the worst of the crowds. I don't want to bring him bushwhacking due to age so I was thinking of booking a river charter to take him out. Any recommendations for outfits that do this? I found a bunch online but would like to know about their reputations.

I assume we'll never be able to get away from the crowds but hopefully we can find a place that's a little bit quieter than the gong show I drove past the other day near Laidlaw :P

I was out today with Johnny's Sport Fishing johnnyssportfishing.com (http://johnnyssportfishing.com) and our group of 4 limited out within a few hours. Without giving out too much information I can guarantee that he can take your dad to a spot away from the crowds and no bushwacking involved.

I've booked with him the last 7 years to fish for sturgeon, sockeye, pinks and chinook and have had a great time each and every time. He's very knowledgeable, super friendly and very patient when teaching you the in's and outs of fishing.

Hope you are able to get your dad out and enjoy the river!

Lang’s Fishing Adventures, highly recommended. Won’t be disappointed.

Has not Rod Toth spoken out against BB in the past and does not do BB charters?

Rod bar fishes for them.

Not true. Last big sockeye year I spotted him bottom bouncing minto channel with his wife

Thanks for the input! The thread's starting to get off track so I'm happy to wrap it up. I made some phone calls and wound up booking a short trip with Johnny's. Looking forward to getting my dad into some fish!

I personally would choose a saltwater charter for sockeye salmon right now and fish the Fraser mouth and nearby waters, since your daily quota is four instead of two. Bon Chovy, Pacific Angler are all doing really well at the moment.

Went out for four hours this morning with Steve from Johnny's Sportfishing and got three fish. It was definitely slow... one fish 20 mins in, then the last two were caught in the last hour. One of the fish had recent battle wounds. Don't know if the fishing was slow because of the commercial opening but happy to come back with some fish in the cooler. The guide and his boat were awesome and my dad and I both had fun :D

Good idea from Rod about going out on the ocean but we wanted to try the river in particular because neither of us have been out on a fishing boat on the Fraser. I also wanted to try bottom bouncing because I've heard so much about it :P It's an interesting way to fish and I like how tactile it is. Before anyone chimes in, don't worry I'm not going to rush out and buy my own BB setup ;)

Thanks for all the info posted in this thread!

Here are some fish pictures. The vacuum-sealed packages are just the bits heading for the freezer... there was a bit more that we ate. Sockeye sure aren't photogenic fish...

Amazing good to hear!

Catching a sockeye in the ocean on a mootching setup is boring. Just reel in, if you try to play them they flip and spit the hook, just reel in and skate the fish in the net. 40 pound test on a medium heavy rod. Boooring

B.B. is fun from the hook up to the fight and sometime they screem up the river and burn along the surface rippin line.

Sounds like a good time

They also jump! I had one the other day jump 4 ft out of the water!

The first fish didn't fight at all to start. Thought it was a snag but I could bring line in. Once it saw the boat it woke up and went on a short run and had a couple of big jumps. They're lively!

We're now comparing how sporting the fight of a snagged sockeye salmon is to an ocean caught one? lol...

Glad to hear you had a good time with your dad Blood_Orange, but the rest of the discussion by others makes me chuckle a bit.

I agree. Caught a lot of sox in the ocean. Never even bothered with a net, as soon as they got near the boat just hoisted the rod tip and shot them right into the back of the boat.

I have fished for Sox in the ocean as well and it can be a hoot when all the rods go off and there are only two of you in the boat. :o

Wish I knew where you BB your socks cause ones we get are boring as hell. BB is boring: cast, nap&bounce, hookup, reel, land; repeat. Only fun part is beer after everyone limits. OK, only other fun part is eating the socks.
The drive out to the bar is more fun the BBing for socks.

Sock prices are getting cheap off commercial if the best part is eating then I suggest you skip the harvest and just buy for 10-15 bucks a fish an option that many do.

If you don't find it enjoyable then skip it! Your time and gas are worth more than the money you'd spend buying the same fish in Steveston.

BB socks is not enjoyable which is what I was replying to. We are targeting Springs, socks are bycatches. Springs are fun, when you land a 30+lbs spring you'll know what I mean.
As for gas the newbies that want to be brought out drives/pays for gas. In return we pass the rod on slow days.
Socks is meat harvesting at the cost of only time. Need you license/tag for Coho, mind as well get free socks.

Trolling, but I’ll bite.

Clearly you haven’t experienced the chaos of double, triple and quad fishon. Some of my best memories are sockeye fishing the chuck.
Right now guys are catching 2 or 3 limits in an hour. Ya sounds boring  :o
