Title: Bad Mojo
Post by: dave c on March 13, 2018, 01:34:04 PM
My lovely wife surprised me at Christmas with my second 3113mb this one married with a 5" Milner kingfisher. The rod is a Babcock build and is a thing of beauty. Last week I hit a run that I have been lucky at.  Float buries fish on. The battle lasted about a minute when all of a sudden the works fly back at me. When I reel in I notice the hook is bent. 12lb Seagar flouro and the hook bends????? Today hit same run. First drift float buries fish on lose it. Fish other water come back to lucky spot fish on mainline breaks????? An hour later fish on lose it.!!!! 3 hookups today lost them all. If i was a hockey player id be sent down to the minors.  I somehow have to get rid of this bad mojo. Any ideas.

Dont get me wrong, I am absolutely thrilled to have 3 hookups its my landing ratio which is troublesome. 0 for 4 with the new setup.

Any ideas? Ya, come fishing with me. A day like that would have you feeling like the Wayne Gretzky of steelheading.

If my mainline broke, among other things I would be checking the eyes on my rod for any nicks or abrasions.
(From personal experience)

Better to have loved and lost than never have loved at all. :)

Sounds like you're trying to catch a barbed wire fence.

Haha, sounds like my day yesterday!
First cast of the morning miss the lazy take. 3rd cast fish on but terrible hook set, late, lose fish on first run.
mid day new spot hot fish on, line wraps on handle, snapped the main line.
New spot first cast, lost my screw and plate on my cp reel.
Went home, did some house work to hopefully work off the mojo :)

Take an hour or two and read some John Gierach.  It won’t help your luck but it’ll help set your head straight before your next try (does me, anyway).

This thread seems more exciting to read than the main steelhead thread on Vedder Steelhead Condition where Chris has yet to report fighting a fish this season.  ;D ;D ;D The thread and its posts on multiple hookups remind me of the good old days. LOL. With all the hot fishing posts here, it will be gong shows on the Vedder if it isn't already.

Think that's bad, the last three trips in 2017 I had nothing, no hits, nibbles, sniffs, even looks. That was at Ross Lake/ Skagit river.
Hope 2018 is better...

Early season my landing % was something crazy bad like 30%, couldn't keep a fish on to save my life, and nothing had changed since last season gear wise. Switched to circle hooks at recommendation of a buddy of mine - been up in the 80% ever since. Only lame thing is that the circle hooks don't seem to work with bait well, so they aren't my choice on bait usage rivers. Artificials like worms and beads... once they are pinned they are as good as landed (obviously with exceptions to break offs)...

Fished the Vedder for the first time this year. 0/2 in 3 hours. I can't believe how much the river has changed since last year in my favorite haunts, that flood must have been epic. Been a long time since I've seen it that low and clear during steelhead season as well... Broke one off in tight and the other was a poor hookup. Hopefully the luck changes tomorrow!
