Title: Help with Fish ID
Post by: BladeKid on March 01, 2018, 11:36:52 AM
Hey folks,

These were caught in our minnow traps, set in agricultural ditches out in Abby/Chilliwack. Any coarse fish experts out there (Rodney)?

Both cyprinids for sure, the first looks like a juvenile carp, the second a Peamouth chub or dace.

Edit:  that first could be a Brassy Minnow.

I like to use this PDF, for salmon and other native fish its really good.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm pretty sure the latter is not a dace though.

Second could be a red side shiner

The first looks like the juvenile goldfish from dragon lake that I see every year. It is, for sure, some type of cyprinid spp.

The second is a tough call. I was leaning to redsided shiner at first, but Dave's guesses of a dace or some other sort of chub are a good guess. It could also be some sort of other shiner species as well.

Don't use the black spots for ID on the second - that appears to be black spot disease from what I see in the picture.

What makes the identification of the second fish more difficult is the fact dace and shiners interbreed ..

This fish below was reported as a peamouth chub by an experienced aquatic biologist... Fish 2 looks very similar to this apparent p.m chub.
As yes, sorry the first pic is definitely not great.
