Title: 2017 Tidal Fraser fishery and water condition update
Post by: Steelhawk on October 07, 2017, 08:33:21 AM
Today is the beginning of the tidal Fraser fishery for coho. Perhaps we should have an update thread on this just like the Chilliwack Vedder thread. I will go out to try this fishery today and come back to report later.

Was at a busy Surrey area bar. Not a coho by mid morning and that were over 30 rods. Is it a disaster or what?

Fished langley area with pink procure roe 8-11ish. I was skunked, saw a chinook jack caught and a couple coho caught. Pretty quiet considering there was about 15 people fishing in my line of sight.

Probably the blob effect with slow fishing for coho. Lol. Was fishing near Port Mann Bridge at rising tide from 4 to 6. Fish were rolling but not biting. Only the boat guys bagged a coho and a spring and all land based guys were skunked..

Dropped by Brownsville to check out the action around 5pm today. Spoke to a couple of guys and they said it was very slow. Only one wild coho caught and released all afternoon.
I then drove along Hwy 17 towards Alex Fraser bridge and saw around 3 commercial nets out.

Same thing Day 2. Only 1/2 the people showed up and most were leaving after just a couple of hours. Let the collapse discussion begin!  If you haven't bought a Tidal license yet, may be you can save that money  ;)

Went to brownsville bar park this afternoon. Only 1 guy landed a wild coho and most people didn't even get a single bit. It was completely dead.
Maybe the rain tomorrow will bring the fish in.

How's everyone's Thanksgiving?

Long day for 2 of us..fished with roe from 9:30-7 on late incoming through outgoing tide, Langley/Abbotsford area. 1 wild and 1 hatch landed, another lost close to shore, many missed bites, all on outgoing tide. Incoming tide was dead on the contrary. Saw only a few jacks landed by others...otherwise quite slow overall.

After a few hundred cast on the Coho spoon I managed to land a wild Coho just as the tide started to move out . Seen quite a few large fish rolling around after that but didn't entice them to the spoon . Then it went dead . Seen others on there bar rods hit and miss . Good outing though .

No fish seen in the area I was fishing.  More than a dozen rods with no bites from just before peak tide until almost low slack tide. A boat came in and landed an 8 foot sturgeon though.

Fished high tide in Delta for a couple hours today. Nothin but bullheads. Lots of native boats out, didn't look like they were getting much fish, either. Didn't even see a fish rise the whole time I was there (lots of chop in the water from all the boats ripping around with their nets though so, who knows).

Fished near Port Mann bridge today, lots of fish showing themselves, no takers.

Some sort of nibbly bugger going tap tap tap but no actual strikes...
Title: Re: 2017 Tidal Fraser fishery and water condition update
Post by: TimL on October 15, 2017, 08:41:32 PM
The taps are most likely from bullheads or other coarse fish pecking at your bait  :P

Fished Langley area Saturday..got skunked..had some decent bites but no hookups. Saw some nice cohos caught, but overall it was slow. Water vis around 2-3 feet in the area I was fishing at.

Fished Richmond Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday north arm  - despite landing three on Tuesday, only One wild jack for me. In total there was about eight fisherman when I was there and only saw one other fish landed though I was only there for about 4 hours.

Sunday north and south arm - not even a bite for me despite two different spots and about 8 hours fishing :( Five hours in south arm with about eight rods in the water and no bites while I was there, only lost gear. North arm about twelve rods and saw 3 small coho landed.

Strangely quiet for mid October - very few fish showing at the moment.

I think the coho are a week behind. I keep a detailed record of my catches over the years. I take this week off every year for coho. Fished hard the last two days on northern tributaries and only one adult coho to show for it. Last year I had multi fish days every day this week.

was talking to the gentleman that collects the Coho heads for DFO in Glen Valley today and he was saying he thinks that the Coho are still staging at mouth of the Fraser since the temperature of the water is 4*C warmer than normal, The last few days I haven't seen much if any fish rolling or jumping in Langley area of Fraser River

Keep in mind that there have been communal nettings going on all weekends throughout the entire lower river so you're not going to find an high abundance of fish showing themselves except maybe mid week.

I spent a short time on the North Arm in Burnaby yesterday afternoon. While I saw no fish, water visibility was pretty good. If it hasn't colored up from yesterday's deluge it may be ok today.

I was out again today on a Tidal tributary and no coho around at all. Lots of old chum ( none fresh from what I saw in 5 hours of fishing )

Subject: FN1079-Fraser River Chum Update - October 16, 2017

In-season estimates of abundance for Fraser River chum are based on catch
information provided by the Albion test fishery.  Using Albion test fishery
data through October 15, 2017 the current median estimate for the terminal
Fraser River chum return is 1.29 million chum, with a 50% migration date of
October 15, 2017.  There is an 80% probability that the run is between 604,000
and 2.733 million, and a 79% probability that the run will exceed the
escapement goal of 800,000.

The current run size is sufficient to allow for commercial opportunities in the
Fraser River.  Additional information on available Commercial TAC and
commercial fisheries planning details will be provided via separate fishery
notices.

Opportunities to harvest chum salmon will be constrained by management
objectives for Interior Fraser steelhead which is a stock of concern presently
co-migrating in the Fraser River.  Harvest opportunities in commercial
fisheries, including First Nation economic opportunity fisheries, will be
planned to minimize impacts on these stocks, as outlined in the 2017 South
Coast Salmon Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP). Fishers are required
to take every measure possible to ensure that their fishing activities avoid
impacts on steelhead.  Any steelhead encountered must be released with the
least possible harm.

While no additional in-season updates are planned at this time, we will
continue to closely monitor chum catch at the Albion test fishery over the
coming days. Should new data indicate the need to update the current run size
and timing estimate, additional updates will be provided.

Richmond south arm fishing today on the outgoing tide. I was skunked but most people around me caught a couple. Been hearing fairly consistently that things picked up over the last three or four days but predominantly jacks. By my notes the jacks show up in larger numbers at the start of the run, hopefully things pick up this next week or so :)

How long is the fishing generally affects after a netting day?
1 to 3 days depending on the extent of the netting. Expect a shorter recovery for a FN opening and for a shorter & less intense commercial opening. If a commercial opening extends from the mouth to Mission & a large number of boats participate expect longer.

Fished Glenn Valley Friday 7am-10:30 - couple hits but no love.  Fished Glenn Valley today 7am-12noon; two of us -two hookups (two long line released).  We each used different bait - the two hookups were on year old frozen fire red cured coho roe - nothing on Barry's natural chum.

Not surprisingly, water was very colored - no vis past about an inch or two as far as we could see.....

FN nets out in front of us all day - one guy called RAPP (too much rain for phone internet? LOL) - the opening is until the 29th, so fishing likely will be S L O W :(

Just from today..6 jacks, 2 of them hatch, and a 5 lb hatch between 4 of us. Missed lots of good bites too and a few fish lost including a sturgeon! Almost all the action happened during the morning outgoing tide, afternoon incoming was dead...saw some more jacks landed when the tide turned again in the evening.
