Title: dark hooks or silver hooks
Post by: oddjob on July 29, 2004, 09:18:54 PM
what is better dark hooks or silver hooks ? ??? ??? I have heard the fish can see the hooks if you are using the silver type. Why are the dark hooks more expensive ? The dark hooks sell out faster, does that mean dark hooks are better? What is your choice of hook?

Does a fish know what a hook is?

It's personal preference. I find bronze hooks much easier to sharpen than nickel ones.

As I sent to you on a PM I donot believe a fish knows what a hook looks like and if using bait it covers most of the hook anyway.

Bronze or Black.

I prefer the bronze hook in clear water.  I fish a spot in the Chehalis where you stand over the run and can see the schooled Coho.  You can see the fish avoid the hook sooner when I throw the chrome (size 4).  Probably to do with the "glint" as it travels through the water.  When the water is dirty it doesn't matter.

What's all this hook sharpening talk I hear about? I never keep a hook long enough for it to get dull. I go through 5 hooks a day. Should I be sharpening every cast before I lose them in the trees?

well when your hook is ticking bottom or snagging by the hook and not the weight,  it can get dull.  Some people toss the blunt hooks but if you sharpen them they can be used over and over and over :)

After a snag you should be checking to see if your hook is dull, and for abrasion on both mainline and leader.

Sticky sharp hooks cannot be overemphasized. I know of one local angler who checks his hook every 6-8 casts.

Yeah but with me, I don't think a fish has ever checked to see if my hook is sharp.

It will when you seem to keep losing them. ;D

My point is; fish see my hook, know it's MY hook, and keep on walking.

I hope so. Girlfriend makes fun of me everytime I come home without fish. Next time I'm gonna come home with herpes... see what she thinks about that.

I should start some sort of competition. Everyone takes me out and we see who can help teach me to catch fish. No monetary reward, just extra man-points. Man-points anybody?!

man-points LOL - what if a girly - fisher who teaches you? girl-points?

just keep at it bob-oh, you'll get it and talk to other fisherman when you are out there - they are usually a not uncivil lot :)

I was at a local fishing store and they were saying to use size 5/0 for bb-ing - seems a bit big but i'm wondering if it would make any difference. I usually just use 1/0 gammies. wish they came in black. personally i think darker is best.
