Title: Uses for water strider pattern?
Post by: Blood_Orange on August 08, 2017, 10:59:48 PM: I ordered a Tenkara rod a few weeks ago (telescopic rod for backpacking... uses flies and a fixed line. No reel). It's been a really fun intro to fly fishing but it only came with three flies. I went shopping for more flies and saw a water strider pattern which I tossed into my basket because it looked badass. Reading online, it seems trout (and fish in general) don't eat them. What are they used for? Will bass eat them?

Remember in fly fishing that the pattern name or type doesn't necessarily mean thats what it actually represents to a fish.

I bet that I'm wrong and it's not a water strider. That's the answer that makes the most sense. At any rate, if you know what it's used for I'd love to know :D

That was one of my thoughts too this morning. Here's a photo:

It's got a different number of legs, and the colours/antennae/abdomen are different too. Or maybe those differences don't matter? At any rate it still looks awesome ::)

I'll ask next time I'm at Sea-Run. If anyone from the store visits this thread maybe they could fill me in.

Post by: clarkii on August 09, 2017, 07:07:08 PM: Definitely a stonefly nymph. Found in rivers only (mostly speaking) and trout love them. Even steelhead.
