Title: Public Service Annoucment
Post by: Novabonker on May 16, 2017, 07:09:52 PM
This winter when I was slogging around in the snow looking for a steeelhead, I felt a little short of breath. Heck, I'm 60, not in the best of shape, was a smoker and just sort of shrugged it off. I have a physical job and I didn't notice a lot at work. A couple of weeks ago, I thought I was fighting off the tail end of a cold, a lot of hacking and coughing, but something didn't seem right. I went to the doctors. The doc looked at me, checked my vitals and sent me off for some tests. It turns out a lot of hacking was due to fluid on the lungs. I have the beginnings of heart failure. I'm taking a fistful of pills, getting a bunch of tests done and seeing a cardiologist right now. My prognosis is positive as I got on it early enough.

I will tell you all to take care and if you notice something isn't right, see a doctor. Part of the reason I'm posting this is I've lost 3 friends this year due to heart issues. The youngest was only 33. It's going to be a while until I'm wandering around the rivers again and that's not a good feeling, but it beats the alternative.

Glad you are in good hands. Cardiologists will do their part & we must do our part. I am a heart attack survivor. Two years ago had one thus stint put into my heart.
Novabonker here basically is a must for heart health : lots of steamed vegetables or stir fry but with max 2 tbs of oil. Avocado or olive oil. Use only medium heat as too hot a fry pan & oil burns/smokes.
Then the oil is extra bad for health.
Becel margarine but use sparely on breads/toast/corn on cob..
Fish & chicken.
Extra lean beef 1x weekly.
Lots of fruit & a daily orange is really good for the ticker.
Quaker Oats hot cereal is very very good & healthy.
Over stress & getting angry is a no no.
Trying to get 7 to 8.5 hours in bed.
Bad unhealthy food once a week I guess is ok but eating healthy should be the norm.
Whole wheat bread, skim milk & white of the egg are good choices. I hardly ever eat the yellow part of egg. Most restaurant foods are unhealthy or too salty. ( high blood pressure )
Do as I say & not what I do.
Actually drink too much German beer or red wine sometimes. ( like listening to music & song from You Tube site thus sometimes get kinda carried away  :-[ )
Too much alcohol not good for the ticker.
Exercise is important. Walking 30-60 minutes...daily or pedal a bike. Bad weather, use a good stationary bike.
Sorry to hear about friends who died.
If you make the right choices, in life style you easily can live 25-35 extra years ( make it into your 80s or 90s !!! )
A guy I know told me his son died from a heart attack.
 42 is too young.

Thanks everyone! My purpose in this post was to make everyone aware of the possibilities that exist, not just for old guys like me, but young ones too. I was quite athletic not that long ago but as the years piled up I got away from it.

A- BOATER - sage advice my friend. Thank you!

best hope of recovery! I was diagnosed with heart problems in my late 30s. In consultation with your MD and other medical specialists recommended exercise and physical activity may help .My issues went away withing 5 years under similar advice.

sbc hris & Novabonker thanks for the positive feedback.
Appreciated.
Lots of bad food out there that will clog our arteries. Ice cream, deep fried foods, mayo, 33% fat cheese,
baking goods, pies, milk shakes, fatty meats pizza ( cheese ) & also bad for ticker is too many caffeine power drinks,msg,...
One guy at a work site many moons ago actually ate 1lb of butter daily. He ate it like a dessert.
I told him eating a lb of butter daily is way too much dangerous dairy fat.
He laughed like I was nuts. About 1.5 years later he was not at work.
Yep dead. Major heart attack.
I buy extra ground beef & make medium size paddies / or meat balls. Put them in a steamer pot for 10-15 minutes at a slow - med. boil/steam.
Then I put some olive or avocado oil in cast iron fry pan ( no more non stick coated fry pans for me )
& heat up pan 70% heat. When putting in the oil to coat the cast iron fry pan, I take a small piece of paper towel & use it to coat the pan evenly. Just need a even film on surface.
Then take out the steamed burgers or meat balls & put in fry pan to get them browned up.
Toast up some grain bread ( even better than whole wheat ) becal, yellow mustard white onions low fat mayo leaf lettuce tomato slice, little salt / pepper & one has a very good burger.
Beef at least 1 x week will give a person a good source of iron. Needed so oxygen can be carried in our blood.
Steamed beets broccoli cabbage are so healthy.
Boil potatoes with carrots & mash.
Healthy.
Stay away from tomatoes in cans.
Acid leaches bad stuff from the can.
Excess sugar salt bad fats white rice white bread donuts french fries cheeses, meats with nitrates/fats ...
One lady cooked me some chicken in a sauce, some vegs but I could see the grease or oil floating around in the sauce ...my thought was " clog my blood pipes food...no way I'm eating that sauce.
Took the chicken she made & poured boiling water over it & then ate it.
Even chicken parts legs etc can be steamed & add spices & it taste great. Brown in cast iron fry pan after if one wishes.
Many times I will buy a Safeway or Costco cooked whole chicken.
At home I will rip some portion off the main chicken & put in a soup bowl & add boiling water into the bowl.
Heats up the chicken to eat but also the boiling water takes the fat off the chicken.
You may know all this already but incase ...
Just thought I would add in extra info that popped into my brain.
The pressure comes when others offer you some unhealthy food at some meal.
It's your heart so make good decisions even if it means " sorry I just cannot have that cake with huge scoop of ice cream.... Ha!  But a spoonful of cake/ice cream ok !
I still drink 2 coffees or 3 with skim milk.
Live long.
Oh ya during day if ya need energy a small piece of dark chocolate will help.
Dark chocolate is also good for the ticker.
1 sq inch piece is a good daily portion.
Like the Lindt Dark chocolate bar Strawberry.
Small piece daily.
In past really liked potato chips or cheesy corn chips to snack on.
But too salty & too much fat.
So I just have 4 pieces ever so often.
Just so I can taste it. Still eat unhealthy food sometimes but a very small portion. Example hard cheese but only small piece.
Eating healthy actually makes a person look forward to eat.
Also pops cokes etc..are really bad.
Sugar & caffeine .
Apple juice with no sugar added, 2-3 coffees, water, skim milk.
Hot chocolate mix is loaded with sugar.
Fruit drinks are full of sugar ( it will say fruit drink. )
Look for fruit juice...the word JUICE. ( & no sugar added as mentioned. )
For a treat I will buy wieners with no nitrate added.
Boil them for 10 minutes to rid lots of the fat out of the dog.
Maybe eat them 1x per month.
& of course fish !
Wild fish.
Like mine steamed or pan fried with only light oiled cast iron pan.
Say again live long.

Eating healthy is very important if you want to stay healthy. Don't forget about exercise as well though! An hour of walking a day at the very least goes a long way :). We're not designed to eat high caloric foods, and to sit around for long periods of time.
So so true.
Have to add in:
A healthy food that is a SUPER FOOD for health & the heart is (drum roll please) WALNUTS.
Buy a big bag or still in shell.
Like to buy in the bag & after opening I fold bag & put a plastic bag clip.  ( or cloths pin will do )
10-12 walnuts daily are a good portion.
Nuts contain oil so do not over eat daily.
Worth repeating. Walnuts are a SUPER FOOD.

What a charlatan , its common sense , do people really need someone to tell them its unhealthy to sit on the couch all day and eat cheese doodles ?

Stay active and eat everything in moderation

Agree with 95% of this advice.
In the gospels they ate lots of nuts locust fish vegs but in The Lord 's Prayer it states at one part...
" give us our daily bread "
Kinda settles it for me there.
Unless the bread then is the real deal compared to today's loaves. ( 2000 yrs later )
Processed foods truly is so bad.
MSG salt bad fats & sugar in whatever form is in near everything... ketchup yogurt breads pork & beans on & on...
Mediterranean diet many follow.

I don't know about a charlatan.  Most of his resources and recipes are free.

Many people don't understand glycemic index, the chemical effect of sugars and grains on the body etc.  Lots of good info gleaned from his podcasts.  The "whole grains are good for you" myth and so forth.

But yeah, money to be made with fad diets and selling books for sure.  I just like he goes about the education piece.

Some good NSNG recipes here if anyone is interested;

I've done the spaghetti squash carbonara recipe there, as well as the cauliflower rice.

Why do you think it is a myth?

I've started to change up big time. Breakfast is a multi grain outmeal with blueberries and 2 - 3 ounces of egg whites. Lunch is lean non processed poultry, raw vegetables and maybe a piece of fruit. Dinner is lean meat of some kind - trying to eat more fish, some steamed vegetables - hold the dessert. IF I eat bread, it's a multigrain. In the short time that I've been doing this, eating well and some diuretics have blown off 15 pounds. As most of my problem is electrical and as far as I know, not plumbing, when and if the arrhythmia gets settled down I should be ok. I can now walk a few blocks and not get completely gassed. So many pills though. Not being able to work sucks, but I hired a pretty good guy to cover for me while I go on this adventure.
Cardiologist on Friday and I should have a better idea wher this is going. :)

The guy is charging $195 per hour ( US $ i presume ) for personal over the phone consultation , all this information is readily available , he says " chocolate milk is bad for you " , umm ya no kidding

Its an educational resource for sure and if you can get a couple of recipes from his site then its all good

Some people are predisposed to high cholesterol and artery clogging regardless of their diet. Others can eat all the fat they want and never have to deal with the issue. Genes are a big factor.
Get blood work done every year and check for lipids and blood sugar. If those are within normal ranges, don't punish yourself by depriving yourself from a treat or two.

And, like someone said...dark chocolate is EXCELLENT (30-40 grams per day, no more!).

:) :) :)  I just left my weekly cardiologist appointment - according to him and according to me - I'm doing much better! I'm allowed to get back to work, I can go for as many walks as I can handle and I've lost 28 pounds. His advice to me was to continue on the path I'm taking and instead of a weekly visit, it's now a monthly visit. I do have to take him out for a fly fishing adventure, but that's going to be my pleasure - the man quite literally saved my life. ;) :)
