Post by: drh on March 02, 2017, 05:44:09 PM
Well after 35 + years fishing the vedder my # was up today. They punched my drivers door lock and only looked in my center console compartment looking for I can only assume was my wallet or cell phone. Both were on my person they only got a few loons and toonies which were not visible.I was parked across from  Peach road on the yarrow side. Keep you eyes open people thieves are out there

Sorry to hear that >:( This is one of the reasons I mostly fish above the crossing. Not sayin it couldn't happen anywhere, but it seems most of the break ins happen in town where it's easy access for scum bags on foot.

This was on Thursday I assume . What time of day did this happen ? I was in the same area at the end of the day , but did not see anything . There was only one pick-up parked along the road that I saw.

there is a squatter camp setup in behind on the way store as well on the vedder. Way more junkies and people you don't want hanging around your vehicle in that area lately.  I have witnessed a scummy looking fishermen actually looking in my friends vehicle for something to steal while camped on the upper vedder. When I caught him he didn't know what to do. Out of site out of mind. Thiefs are always looking for an easy target.

Anyone with a fly rod :P
Joking aside, I've seen fishermen poking around other vehicles as well. Scum bags come in all shapes and sizes.

I was more joking than anything.else.
I don't usually shower and shave till I get home.
And my fishing getup is hardly my Sunday best.

Guess it was my turn today. Lock punched but the scumbag never got in. Pretty ballsy considering where and how my truck was parked that nobody saw them.

That's crazy.....I was parked very near there yesterday. I was only there for an hour or so, after which I headed up river.
After hearing/reading of break ins I am less and less comfortable leaving my car parked.....particularly in the lower, I also leave zero valuables in the car.

Not always. There have been past reports on this forum where people have done this and left their vehicle empty only to come back to smashed windows out of spite by the potential thieves.

I use to have my old truck which was a base model from 93. No power no alarm,
And I would leave a sign in it saying "Rick just checking out the water conditions be back in 5 minutes"

That's a good idea, or a vulgar and threatening note like, "Break into my car and I catch you -  ill break your f@#*n teeth" 😲

Mine was  the same at the Yarrow corner parking lot. They used a screwdriver to punch the passenger side door and only took change from the console.

One of these day I hope there's isnt going to be a break-in of the wrong vehicle at the wrong time and ultimately end in tragedy

Ya it would be a shame to lose a pillar of the community who roam around breaking into cars and causing property damage throughout chilliwack  ::)

Well, it would be bad if a lone fisherman came back at an inopportune moment and had his teeth knocked in.

Or an irate fisherman loses it on a vandal/thief and then gets to face assault charges or worse over a damaged vehicle and spare change.

A few years back there was a guy selling coffee and snacks from a van at Lickman Road and Tamahi. Served a dual purpose of providing nourishment to hungry fishermen and keeping an eye out for thieves. Is he still out there ?

A dumb question; Can somebody ask ICBC to put a few bait cars in the area? I'm sure the insurance claims for broken windows have already pinched them badly.

I hope the bait cars are deployed in the areas to root out the thieves. I feel more and more kind of scary to go to Vedder river.

That link is very outdated as the media contact listed - Sgt. Peter Thiessen, retired in 2014.

Might want to try asking on the ICBC Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/theICBC

or on the ICBC Twitter page:

Welp, tis the season I guess :-\

Was down at the Vedder Canal this morning and several vehicles were broken into that were parked on the dyke with quick smash and grabs. Some guy had only a TOWEL stolen! Be careful folks.

And in case you're wondering, there wasn't any pink action going on.

I keep a Laminated Plastic sign in my dash that says  "NO VALUABLES IN VEHICLE"   - I drive an open air Jeep and this has helped a lot!
