Title: Kawkawa Lake
Post by: Rieber on March 01, 2017, 01:42:08 PM
Did anyone go to Kawkawa Lk this morning? Still iced up or open water?

Gas is expensive - too cheap to go look myself. :-\

Was out there 3 days ago and had a look. Lots of ice on Kawkawa still. Maybe a week or 2 until ice off?

A couple of open patches, but can't be reached from the boat launch. It should be fishable in one more week... Otherwise two more weeks right after Chilliwack's All About Fishing.

My phone tells me starting Saturday, we're going to get a week of snowfall. That's going to set things back a bit.

Anybody been out to Kawkawa Lake in the last few days? Any word on the open water?

On Sunday it was half frozen. A few people were fishing on open water. It was good - lot of action, on top - coho, close to the bottom - kokanee.

Drove out last night to see firsthand. Was there around 6:30pm. Didn't see anything rising - really surprised with that. Didn't see any ice from the main boat launch. Still snowbanks in the parking lot.

Went there today. Didn't get out myself due to mechanical issues but only other person put there said they didnt get any. Heard it was gang busters over the last week though.

Did anyone have any good action this past weekend? I decided not to go. I figured if I don't go for two trips to Kawkawa I can put that money that would have been spent on gas, toward buying a pair of ropes from Firstlight. I would get more enjoyment from the ropes than the two trips to Kawkawa.

 ;D too funny

Just meant that it wasnt good when i went but could be good on any given day. Personally, i have good success there early and late season. Start off with a quick troll around, work the deep spots jigging and then troll some more if it's slow. Bait of choice is quality krill procured.

Yah ,  Capt. Quinn , he's a funny baffoon .
I know what you mean , one day it's great the next it's a bust ,like the Canucks eh! . I usually anchor over by th cottages and watch the sounder , wait till I see a school going by . Then I'll drop a krill down off the bottom . Did it for me .

I'm heading out there tomorrow. Does anyone know where to get Krill? Only place I know of is chilliwack dart. There was a pet store around Langley that had it but not anymore and all the other places I've called just have the krill all mashed for fish feed.

Pacific Angler has a bunch if you are in Vancouver.

Cured deli shrimp works well too. I think worms would be good as well. Once I brought a lot of salmon eggs but found difficult to stay on hook, so I dumped in the lake. A fish caught later had full stomach of cured eggs.

Ended up stopping at chilliwack dart and tackle on my way out this morning. Fished from 10-2ish.
Lots of coho. Enough I lost track. Moved around switched techniques a couple times. Managed only 2 Kokanee to the boat. Good for a post dinner snack tonight I think.
Today I learned they should have an opening for Kawkawa coho.

The coho has worms in body. don't try

Uh... The coho need to be released. No retention.  So I didn't try.

As Noahs Arc mentioned, you cannot retain the Coho in this lake so where are you getting your info? Do you have a reliable link to share that supports the "worms in body" statement?

I'm sure it was a "friend of a friend of a friend, I can't remember his name" that retained Kawkawa coho and found worms.

While we're on it I'll mention dumping a bunch of cured salmon eggs in a lake probably isn't the best practice either  ::)

I was wondering if curing chemicals were poisonous.

I highly doubt it. Tried to research the ingredients of ProCure - but didn't come up with anything. My guess would be a mix of salt, sugar, dehydrated beet powder for colour, and some crushed up krill or other fish for taste. I don't imaging disposing a couple handfuls in the lake would be anything to be concerned about.

There was that study done a few years ago showing commercial cures showed some mortality in steelhead or salmon smolts. I think they suspected the sulfites as the culprit though dont recall all the details.

psd1179 - I was trying to say perhaps don't dump your garbage into the lake.

Oh I was also wondering if the coho meat was a deep red flesh like sockeye?

2 No

Seems reasonable to stop using curing chemicals, based on the report above that sulfites can kill juvenile salmon and steelhead. There are recipes online for homemade cures that don't use sulfites. I'll try one of those next season and see how it goes.

Maybe we should all stop using curing chemicals?

I'll decide for myself and you decide for yourself. Trying to tell people online what to do has never worked out well for me  ::)

On some commercial cures you'll see something like "meets Oregon State guidelines" or something similar the label. I believe that's based on reduced sulfite content due environmental concerns.

I'm sure there are DIY cures based on nothing but some sort of salt + sugar base which should have basically no adverse environmental impact. Shelf life may suffer a bit without borax and/or sulfites though.

Most of the coho we encountered this year were spewing out worms/nematodes while being landed so we did all of our releases in the water by grabbing the hook to dislodge, which we usually do anyway.

Kokanee fishing has already slowed down which is expected for April. We won't be going again until late May.

Either the residents or the boaters pooh in the water.

I am very interested in this Rod.  Sounds like they were in the stomach, and expelled by being brought up from depth ... Is this a common issue with these coho? Any thoughts on what species of nematodes?

I'll collect some samples next time Dave. They are definitely being expelled as they come up. First time I've seen it after all these years.

Out yesterday. Water was nice except for one brief squall. First trip of the season, so it was more of a "locate the new boat issues" trip. Slow for most boats, but nice.

Kokanee fishing is pretty dead right now as expected, it'll pick up again in about a month from now.
