Tale of two hockey teams. In the East, let's call the team the Leafs blows a 2 goal lead in the 3rd period to lose in overtime. Meanwhile across the continent, there's a team, let's call them Canucks trailing by 3 goals ties the game with half of a minute remaining in overtime loses in a shootout.

OTTAWA – Immediately after the game in which he became the first player in NHL history to score 4 goals in an NHL debut, Auston Matthews announced his retirement. Experts and pundits unanimously agree that he will go down as the greatest player in the Toronto Maple Leafs 100 year history.
“I’ve had a pretty good run,” said Matthews in his postgame press conference, “and I’ve accomplished all I set out to accomplish in my career. There’s really nothing left for me to do.” When asked why he is choosing not to pursue a Stanley Cup, let alone a regular season win, Matthews replied, “I don’t think I need to anymore. This was so much sweeter. Nothing can top this.”
Matthews, who dazzled in the first and last game of his NHL career, retires as the franchise leader in points and goals scored on October 12th, 2016 in a game against the Ottawa Senators. Throughout his career, Matthews averaged 4 goals a game, more than Gretzky, Lemieux, and Ovechkin combined.
At press time, the Leafs announced Matthews’ jersey retiring ceremony, as well as the unveiling of his statue on the prestigious “Legends Row”, will take place this Saturday, when the Leafs face the Bruins on Hockey Night in Canada.

Guess NHL when handing out the medal to a player they can give an envelope with $50,000 "Cash"

I was at the Friday night game. Ryan Kessler is public enemy no.1 at the Rog. Well deserved, I watched the chippy little shots and elbows and other liberties he took while he was away from the puck. When he said "I hate Canada" before the Olympics I lost any respect. We made him a multi millionaire, his kids were born here and he comes off like some ungrateful spoiled little snot. P on Kessler. I sincerely hope he never gets the Stanley Cup ring he wants so badly.

A pt in Philly. In the history of the Canucks vs Philly in Philly the Canucks I do not believe got many pts.

What a team that was. Remember Larry Robinson a good natured guy but if provoked too far he could hold his own against anyone in the rough house department.
He fought Dave The Hammer & Larry got in more punches. Clear winner.

The Canucks scored 2 goals to get the game tied.
Then they decided to go into a defensive mode & try to run the clock to zero & get a pt in the least & possibly get the two in OT or the SO.
Hawks sensed the Canucks went into defensive shell so it was like blood in the water to great white sharks. With aprox 2 minutes a Hawk gets a close in shot from the left side. Nearly scored.
Then Hawk skates hard & goes over the blue line on the right wing & takes the shot.
Miller should of stayed more into the net but he comes out too far to cut the angle.
Shot goes wide & rebounds from behind right to a Hawk on the left side. Shoots & Miller dives / flops out to make a desperation stop. I think "OH NO"
Puck basically goes into the wide open net >:(
If Miller stayed into the net, he would of been able to get over in time & in control to make a save.
Miller has been really good but he had a melt down on this play.
His mistake & team mates going into a defensive shell with 8 minutes left in the game.
This is hard on the heart.

Last game before the break the Canucks looked like a tired team. Back to back games.
Tonight they looked too rested after 6 days off.
Mentally they looked "out of it".
Coach should make them stand infront of a full length mirror. Brutal game to watch.
Ref blew the call. Guy backed in to Miller on that goal.
Canucks better focus quick or else they will go into a losing skid.
Trevor should bring in an old USSR hockey coach as a guest from the 60s/70s era to run the team for one week.

Management must do some serious vetting of the foreigners such as Erickson, Sbisa, Edler, Sedins and implement a total ban. They're taking jobs away from good old Canadian boys. ;D ;D

I had a free ticket to the game last night. I want a refund.Miller stunk and (why Willie won't play Markstrom a bit more is lunacy) everyone else looked hungover or half asleep. There's just no edge or anything remotely close to physical play. Someone needs to let them know it's a contact sport, not tiddlywinks. The only bright parts were the classy Sedin ceremony and Vij, hisowndarnself delivered yummy curry and gift cards to our row.

2.0 Despite my pessimistic posts above, there's a lot of bright spots. Horvat, Stetcher, Tryamkin,Baertschi, Granlund. And there's a lot of stuff for the future in Utica. I really like Pedan and Subban, Virtanen if they can help him mature,Colby Robak,Brock Boesner,Cole Cassels, Thatcher Demko all show great potential.But NOT if they rot in the AHL.

They gave a goal after review to Nashville but from the video replay it sure looked like it did not cross the line. Coach Willy looked stunned at the call.
If the call was in Canuck's favour ( no goal. ) the game possibly is tied at the end of regulation thus a pt.
A Canuck was battling for the puck behind the net & a Nashville player cross checked him in the back & it sent him onto the ice. No call ???
When is it ok to cross check a player in the back & knock him down.

Canucks should award a start to a winning goalie. Team / goalie gets the W & he starts the next game.
Win again , play him the next game...
If our goalie wins 5 games in a row, then give the back up the next game. After winning 5 games a goalie needs to recharge. Now the next goalie will try to get on a roll. Lose ,the other goalie goes in.

Take a look at the map of N America. 80% of the teams are within 1-1.5 hrs or less of each other.
Canucks go on their 3-5 hr or more flights. Location puts the Canucks behind the 8 ball.
That ref should get a hockey stick ( turn in his stripes/ whistle. ) & become a player.
He could be the teams enforcer. He has that aggressive edge in his tone of voice thus bet he has a bit of a temper.

Both teams were skating fast. Just like a play off pace.
Guess the Leafs ran out of gas as the game wore on as they played the night before.

Watched the Red Wings play today vs Pens & there was so much hustle & play making.
Hard skating great passes physical play lots of scoring chances & when watching the Canucks vs Flyers there was zero comparison. Canucks stunk out the place. Reminded me of a car with plain tires stuck in deep snow. Hardly getting any shots during the power play.
Maybe these guys are doing their best & ( who knows ? ) if that's the case this team will never ever get a Cup. They are an average team at best & average teams will never go far into the playoffs.
Chris must be sitting in a nice chair with a big smile. Sleep well.

Possibly those cutting words were read by the Canucks & it stirred them up because they are playing a very good entertaining game. On the power play the Canucks were taking multiple shots but somehow only 2 made it to the net.
Guess the secret is to give the Canucks a week rest between games.

When the Canucks got into the NHL in 1970 they had to have a head coach of course & he was named Hal Layco or something like that. By 78-1979 the Canucks would hire a new coach, let's say the 6th head coach. Yep by 78 or 79 ( 8-9 years in the league they fired 5 coaches !!!! )

It's hard watching the team reload but the kids are looking good. I hope the Sedins retire after next season because the magic just isn't there any more. The check that Polak got the hook and suspension for was really questionable. He was clearly aiming for shoulder to shoulder and Bjorkstrand turned at the last second and made himself vulnerable. I've seen worse just let go. (I'm thinking I'm going to have to join Chris on the dark side)

Now Boston sensed the Canucks put their tails between their legs thus they kept them there.
In the finals the Canucks should of kept up the heat in every game.

Yes heard from the grapevine that the Leafs lost to the Sabres.
A. Matthews did score though.
Maybe FA is right on when he said in the recent past that the Leafs will go on a losing streak.
Maybe nerves are setting in knowing the play offs are the real deal compared to the less stressful regular season games.
How the Leafs got a top goalie for peanuts from the Ducks totally amazes me.
A Matthews is so cool around the net. He targets his shots & has quick hands.
Kinda like pool. A good player zeros in on the angle & takes the shot. Ball goes into the pocket.
But if a player just does not concentrate they can miss a completely easy shot.
Lots of teams who have lack of scoring have players that just have flat no target shots. Maybe 1-20 shots become a goal.
Guys like Matthews concentrates ,picks his target of what part of the net & let's it go.

I was really impressed with the play of Boeser. He seemed really mature with the puck and has good nose for what's going on around him. He's a keeper if he can do this consistently over the season. Boucher's been a pleasant surprise for a pull off from the recycle pile. There's some older guys they need to jettison in favour of the youngsters and I'm sure a few will be gone in the expansion draft.It's tough to watch the rebuild but there's lots of sun on the horizon.

At the present time it's painful being a Canuck fan but this pain will lead to a big gain, a draft pick on par as the leafs got.

Watched the spirited game in Edmonton on Sat. & Ducks came out with a point.
It was a very very hard fought game.
Then the Ducks have to play the Flames tonight against a rested team.
Ducks win 4-3.

Well you are tanking this year and should get a good player in the draft that you certainly need but the management does not draft too well it seems.

Honestly thought they would literally dig deep & pot in at least 5 goals.
When the players went to centre ice & lifted their sticks to salute fans....there was zero reaction.
Fans just stared at them.
Only lively people in the seats were Oiler followers.
Canuck players seeing the zero reaction to the salute then skated fast off the ice.
Now the Leafs game!
Pens threw everything at them & Leafs fought back ever time & got the W.
Fans were so happy. They were entertained & got their $$$ worth 10 fold.
The $$$ the Canuck fans dished out was -10 fold. They were ripped off / robbed all season.
Think Canuck fans who go to the games must have easy work or they won the lotto or have rich dads.
People that work & sweat hard for their bucks would not buy a Canuck ticket ( watch games on boob tube only. )
When you see the big pay players not making a dif. then why are they being paid that much?
Management handed out the candy for what ?
Canucks should get rid of the twins even if they have to pay even half of the salary for some team to take them. Most games they coast out there. Maybe age or the big loss in finals were too much to over come in their minds.

When players sit down & get the ouch surely they will get the point to suck it up & perform.
Before games they will sit for 10 minutes staring at blackboard. Sentence on board: (today shoot the puck at net many times. Go for the & bang in rebounds.

I liked Willie D as he really looked like he was attentive & looked frustrated when losing.

Plus 21 players can be a big number against a lonely solo coach.
Coaches can try to crack the whip but players kinda laugh inside. ( we are more powerful than you. )

FA would fit the bill on your last sentence but not sure if he can skate, that would hurt his chances but glad he still is there as an advisor. It will be a tough few years to be one. I know all about that. ;D ;D ;D

The Leafs were good, real good, and won one more than I thought they would. They will be a team to reckoned with for the next 5-8 years. Gee I never knew there was a game tonight thus was out ding some exercise. Even seen about 5 Chinese sports fishermen / 1 lady with those long rods fishing at the middle arm across from the airport.
Lots of wind suddenly from the east & good sized waves.
Dark clouds towards Vancouver & even a rainbow towards the NE side of airport. 8% only if that but very broad & colourful. Then seen a pickup truck with two white guys getting their fishing gear ready.
Went over to them & mentioned about FWR & one guy says he's seen vids on You Tube. Infact he says that is why he & his friend are here. They saw a FWR vid & bull trout caught.

It was so so physical with fights stick work & heavy body checks.
As it turns out the league today has less fist fights but the stick work & physical play remains in a % of games. Hopefully Ottawa Sens will play hard & not allow the Pens push back take an easy win.
Playoff games must be fought 100% & not get into so defensive mode ( back on their skates. )

By what I see the Ducks at this stage seem to have the best remaining "energy" then Pens Sens & lastly Predators. From all the little things I see happening the Ducks I guess are going to wear down the other two teams they meet Nashville & either Pens or Sens.
Ducks are big physical ,skilled & enough speed that I believe will give them the Stanley Cup.
But if the other teams suck it up & go for it & gets the breaks ( hits post & goes in...hits D man's stick & deflects in ...idea ) it's anyone's Cup.
Imagine 6 wins = the Stanley Cup.

Decided to rest up & charge my batteries. Been working extra hard for last four days so decided to watch the full game today between Nashville & Ducks. What a great game. Both teams went at it like the Fraser & Ali boxing fight.
Honestly the Ducks had a way more scoring chances & should of won the game.
Both teams were very physical & I give Nashville congrads. & respect because it takes courage to stand up to the Ducks.
Ducks team are loaded with big mean physical guys. It just shows if a team plays hard & gets goaltending they can win a game even though somewhat outplayed in the offensive chances department.
Nashville up in games 3-2 thus Ducks are against the wall. One more loss & Ducks pack their bags & go home.
Ducks are a very very good but so are the remaining teams. Hope Pens do not get the Cup as there are just too many yappers plus they got it last yr.

Apparently we didn't break the noise record because it doesn't count immediately following game induced cheering so after a goal doesn't count. It was still awesome though.
Preds have won 12 playoff games. The game winning goal has been scored by 11 different players with only one player getting a second. It truly is a team effort. And despite Anaheim outshooting the Preds 3 to 1, high danger scoring chances were fairly even with Ducks having 9, Preds having 8. Our defense kept the middle closed down, rarely allowed second chances. A lot of their shots were from way out or from the wall. Heck, most of the time they didn't even have much for traffic.
Great game and so much fun to be at. Can't wait to go to 2 or 3 Stanley Cup Final games.

When we got really close it was a one goal game where we scored late and from that goal till the end was crazy. This was more back and forth and it was almost immediately after they pulled the goalie we got the first empty netter so then it moved to celebrating the win, not cheering the team on to have them hold on.
Rinne definitely has decided this is his shot and he has stood tall and strong and carried the team through a couple of these games.

I fully expect the Preds to come out on fire tomorrow night. I doubt we will hold them to that few of shots but I fully expect us to win. This was one of those games you played hard enough and well enough to win for almost the entire time. It is the type of thing that just makes you mad. What makes the Pens dangerous is many times their forwards get some space,thus they can really lean into their shots. A sniper shot is dangerous. Plus should it get stopped,the puck may rebound & it's whoever gets to it first.
If a Pen then the puck will get whacked hard & possibly find the back of the net.

The Pens will be better. I don't doubt that. So will Rinne. After a horrible game all season long, his next outing he averages like a .950 save percentage. It is very consistent. I expect him to look much better this game.
Our top 4 defense are shockingly quick and good with their sticks. One play really highlighted it. Crosby had a breakaway with Ellis right beside him. Crosby fully expected Ellis to try and hit Crosby to get the puck away but Ellis was quick enough to reach in and poke the puck which led to Crosby falling down because he was bracing for the hit. That is a play that would almost surely be a score or at least an amazing save by the goalie in most other games but our guys didn't panic. We are very used to getting our sticks in to mess up shots like that. It should help reduce the sniper type shots.
Of course it is all a game of luck and a couple bad bounces will lose you the game and a couple good ones will win the game for you. In the end though they usually even out. I still believe that the Preds will win tonight. I also think the Pens will have a really hard time winning in Nashville. It is a huge advantage for the Preds. I still feel Preds in 6. If it goes 7, flip a coin.

What a disappointment. Once again, a couple minutes is all it takes.
First, I dislike our 4th line as has been played the first 2 games. First three lines are a combination of speed and skill. 4th line is a gang of painfully slow bruisers with very little puck handling skill and almost no chance of scoring except on a fluke. If we are going to try and play fast against them like we did Chicago, then McLeod and Fiddler have no business being on the ice. Perhaps undisclosed injuries to certain team members are the reason for that 4th line but I would rather play fast guys from the minors than deal with that line. They are getting destroyed and are playing only about 10 minutes a game, leaving the rest of the players to pick up so much of the game that they are tired.
Second, home ice and last change have been huge for Nashville in the past and I expect it to play a part in the next two games. I will not be shocked if the series is tied at 2-2.
Third, I sure hope Rinne is able to put these last two games behind him and become the wall that we know he can be. Either that or Sauros plays and is able to do well. I don't know but we can't afford these huge streaks anymore.
Fourth, it sure felt like the team the last half or the third period lost their teamwork and became more individuals trying to get it done. That isn't how we play and isn't going to get it done. The Pens can do that. It isn't us.
Between the crowd and hopefully some major line changes (hopefully Wilson and Harry Z are healthy enough to play Saturday) and Lavy ripping the team a new one, I think we will be able to tell fairly quickly if it is more of the same or if the fire has been lit. If it is more of the same, Pens in five, maybe six. If the fire has been lit, it's going six or seven and we have a shot.

They've essentially only played 3 lines with those on the fourth line only getting around 10 minutes per game for both of the first two games. Given we can ice a third line that could be a scoring threat that would be able to eat up additional minutes, I'm not sure why that wouldn't be tried.
Being able to roll four lines through the whole game with significant scoring threats on all lines is a huge benefit.

That was a heck of a game. Very loud inside the stadium and it was packed. The stadium holds just over 17,000 and they estimated 50,000 were in the stadium and downtown watching at the couple places they set up the big blow up screens. They closed off a number of streets downtown so people could fill the street to watch but they grossly underestimated the number of people that would show up and say they will need to close more streets tonight.
As for the game, we changed lineups, put in speed which is what I had said we needed to do. Pekka started off looking shaky even though the crown was chanting his name during warmups. One of the speed people we put in drew the first penalty that led to our first goal. Crowd noise I am convinced led to the second goal because I don't think the Pens were ready for the building to get that loud and stay that loud.
Pens have to be worried. Pekka is calmed down and back comfortable and stopping a whole lot. The offense looked better. Our defense completely shut them down. Yes, they got one but Crosby and Malkin combined for 0 shots. Crosby only attempted 2 shots, Malkin didn't even attempt one. Now, we can't expect that to continue but I expect our defense to continue keeping their contribution to a minimum like they have in the first three game. With a solid goalie and neutering their offense, they will have to essentially shut us out but given we are getting scoring from all four lines and our defense, that is very difficult to do. Also, after last game, they might have realized that the chance that they will win in Nashville is SLIM at best. They will need to take games 5 and 7 which won't be easy if Pekka is back solid. If we win tonight and game 5, I don't see the Pens coming into Nashville for a game 6 and winning. I also don't see anybody in there having any hearing for a couple days.

The plan now for Chris the TO advisor & FA the Canuck advisor to get GM's to trade either entire Maple Leaf team OR Canuck team for the entire Pens team. ;D
Chris at least has got to see the Leafs hoist the Cup multiple times.

Hats off to the Pens. Awesome year for the Preds. Off season is going to be shorter than normal and yet way too long.
I think Nashville showed we are a fan base to recon with and we plan on making home ice advantage something that means something in hockey again. Our lack of a true #2 center and the loss of Fiala who was really coming into his own really hurt our scoring ability. We have a couple guys in the system that might step up into that roll next year or it is possible there might be moves to bring in a 2C. Matt Duchene was a name thrown around a lot but the asking price was high. It isn't worth breaking up our top 4 D as we have seen that they can be game changing, especially now that they are finally used to playing together. A lot depends on the expansion draft. Current expectations are either wingers Smith or Wilson, or center/winger Jarnkrok, or after the playoffs, center/winger Sissons. The first two would free up a decent amount of cap space and make getting a 2C very possible. The other two are extremely cheap contracts but are less proven. Either way I think we will be doing fine next year and hopefully we can use this year as a jumping off point to many years of deep playoff runs and hopefully a cup or two.

Personally PK Subban is not worth $11,000,000.
He's a good player but he is more mouth than anything else.
Understand Mr Russia of the Caps is avaible for the right deal.
Trade PK with other players or drafts for Mr Russia.
If the ref was at a better angle he may of not blown that whistle.
Imagine if that goal counted.
Very possible Nashville goes on & wins game 6.
Pens sure did not want to get to a game 7 because they knew the pressure is super increased & like OT even though it's the 1st period.
Game 7 would be winner take all & both teams would of smelt blood.

When Nashville was down 1-0 & trying to even the game,a Nashville forward was trying to skate to the front of the Pens net & he was cross checked.
The ref ( piss ant. ) should of called a penalty.
After all he blew the whistle earlier & stole the goal away from a Nashville team that was busting their butt off. >:( >:( >:(
With the power play & goalie out ...2 man advantage would of given the Preds a chance to tie up the game.
Remember there are so many good NHL teams out there my guess Nashville does not get in the finals for 10 years.
PK the mouth predicts they will be playing for the Cup again next year. I do not think so.

I , I , I , hope your right. If they get to the finals next yr. as PK predicted & if so hopely win ( remember the Bills football losing in the Super Bowl many times in a row ) I, I , I , will "eat my shorts". ;D

Great team Nashville is but the big push they gave to kick out 3 great teams & the sorrow of losing in the finals takes a lot of starch out of a team. Plus not scoring in the last two defeats Ouch.
Plus an ex teammate getting the Cup winning goal....Ouch ouch ouch.
To get by 3 teams to make it to the big dance & then to get that last 4 wins.
Maybe Nashville just pushed themselves so hard to get by the Ducks they were a little spent / injuries to go totally full out against the Pens. That Duck series was a war.

Ulman,Pulford,Braun ( another slow guy ) Armstrong,Turnbell,Eddie Shack skating like the wind & big hairy thing under his nose,Paul Henderson,Salming a great D man,Frank Mchovolach The Big M,.....are just some of the Leafs that come to mind. On Hockey Night in Canada in the 60's when the Canadians vs Maple Leafs played on a Sat night if was the talk of Canada. Esso & CPR tv commercials. Howie Meeker explaining on his prompter what happened on this or that play. He 'd get so excited & say something like. " Jimmie Gee Cricket. "
Those were the days. Oh ya the players were making $50,000 or something like that back then.

That was an unexpected pick - BUT - he has some chemitry with Dahlin the other Sedin in waiting so it may work out. Somebody beter make that kid a few sandwiches though. 165 pounds and 6 feet is pretty scrawny. Maybe they can trade Edler for some pizzas to feed him. ;)
