I thought they were meeting on Friday to make a determination whether to open. This was from the last DFO notice.

The sockeye updates they post are seperate from opening and closing notices. I believe the fraser river sockeye panel passess on there statistics and recommendations to fisheries who decide to open it or not based on their findings.

Was this e-mail from DFO? They announced tuesday that they are going to review the sockeye run timing on friday and announce then any sportfishing opening for sockeye. Just wondering why DFO never sent out any notices that it will open yet.

If you are a sockeye person, make plans for Friday.

We on this board try to be ahead of everyone else. This is one on the reasons why FWR is the top fishing site in the world. ;D ;D

Why would they announce the opening on Friday when it opens at 0.01 hours on Friday. :D

I have a meeting with Bill Otway in 15 minutes re a major protest against FOC that may be happening in the near future so will get his time table on the lenght of the sockeye season as well for you.

Hey Chris,
I noted some interesting year-on-year DFO estimated sockeye migration past Mission stats:   as at 20/7/04                                 as at 22/7/03

Early Stuart:   186,000                        25,900
Early Summer:205,000                        13,200
Summer run:   24,000                          2,300
Does this mean that the anticipated runs are almost 10 times the 2003 size or are the runs early this year.
Thanks for your insights and for all your work on our behalf.

Interesting statistics. Just when DFO thought they had it figured, nature throws a curve !

Great #'s Nostro, hope they're right. This time last year was slow. Looks good for an opening, no?

Nostro: very interesting.  Do you happen to know the numbers for 2002?  I think that was the year it was so good, there was a second opening.  It would give us good and low comparisons.  Thanks.

The 2002 DFO stats as at July 23, 2002 are:
Early Stuart: 60,800
Early summer: 39,400
Summer run: 24,200

This could be a great year or the socks are early. Remember, there were a lot of socks reported a couple of weeks ago. Now, not so good. Friday? Here is hoping.

Re my meeting this morning the opening will be a go as all the notice needs is a signature from up stairs.

Also the good news for those that like to fish sockeye Early Stuarts now upgraded to 200,000 fish and Early Summers have the same amount in the river now.

Looks like some good fishing for those that fish for them. For me it will be bar fishing and maybe try to entice some into biting ghost shrimp  by short floating them Will be trying at the mouth of the Sumas or the Harrison.

Off fishing now and scout things out for Max's bar fishing trip in Maple Leaf Craft #1 tomorrow. ;D ;D

I see the river is rising in South Fort George, hope it does not colour up for our bar fishing trip.

Also the SDA will be spear heading a major protest against FOC in the next few weeks for allowing the illegal fishing that has been going on the last few years.

The planning starts now as a meeting of all organizations including BCWF, Commercial fishers, Drift fishers, Salmon Society and so on starts tomorrow.

Stay tunned and consider getting behind this coalition as details start to surface in the days and weeks ahead..

The best part about Friday's opening is that DFO forecasts at this time for the season to stay open until september 6. It really could be a long hot summer of sockeye bashin'.

Max, sit back and crack a reeb. You'll see the most disgusting acts and antics you'd ever imagine. People yelling broken english at each other, fist fights, people "hooking" fish with permission from relatives long since passed, you name it. Imagine a Brinks truck driving by with a leak of bills thru one of the doors, that's Fraser River sockeye "Fishing"!
:D :o ;D LOL

Give it a try Max and then make up your own mind. It CAN be a gong show at times. Drive around and find a quiet spot (yes it can be done !) Despite what one hears or reads not all sockeye fishermen are dorks. Yes it can get very crowded at the more popular bars, no different than fishing the Vedder and Chehalis when the cohos and chinooks are running.  As I said earlier, walk a bit and find your own solitude.

Thought you said it wouldn't be open friday? ??? ???
I went to the top and asked the question after reading what Chris said. I was told the same story that Chris reports from his meeting today. Best part was when I was told the length of the season.

The current status of the Early Summer and Summer Run components of the Fraser
River sockeye return provides for recreational sockeye retention opportunities
in most Southern B.C. marine waters including the tidal and non-tidal waters of
the Fraser River.

Effective 00:01 Friday, July 23 and until further notice, the daily limit for
sport caught sockeye is four (4), minimum size 30cm in the following waters
that are open to salmon fishing:

- those waters of Johnstone Strait below Lewis Point (Subareas 12-1 to 12-4 and
Area 13);

-  Strait of Georgia and the tidal waters of the Fraser River (Areas 14, 15, 17
to 19, 28 and Area 29, including the tidal waters of the Fraser River
downstream of the Mission CPR Bridge but excluding Boundary Bay);

-  Juan de Fuca Strait (Area 20), and the

-  West Coast of Vancouver Island: Areas 21, Areas 24 to 27,and Areas 121 and
123 to 127 (Area 23 is currently open to sockeye retention targeting Barkley
Sound sockeye)

Effective one hour before sunrise on July 23 and until further notice, the
daily limit for sockeye is 2, minimum size 30cm in the:

- Non-tidal waters of the Fraser River - from the downstream side of the CPR
Bridge at Mission upstream to Alexandra Bridge excluding the Upper Landstrom
Bar triangle-shaped closed area described in Fishery Notice #FN0241 dated April
28, 2004). Note that fishing is allowed during daylight hours only from one
hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset. Check your local newspaper for
these times.

The following waters are excluded in the July 23 sockeye retention opening:
Upper Johnstone Strait above Lewis Point and Queen Charlotte Strait) which
includes Areas 11, 111 and Subareas 12-5 to 12-48 in order to protect Nimpkish
River sockeye; Area 16 will be closed all season in order to protect returning
Sakinaw Lake sockeye in the area; Nitinat Lake (Area 22); and Subarea 29-8
(Boundary Bay).

Effective July 28 and until further notice, those portions of Queen Charlotte
Strait and upper Johnstone Strait above Lewis Point (Areas 11, 111 and Subareas
12-5 to 12-48 will open to sockeye retention as impacts on Nimpkish River
sockeye are no longer a concern.

Rockfish Protection areas that are currently in effect are closed to fishing.
The locations of these closures are listed in Fishery Notice FN0155 dated March
25, 2004. The maps and specific boundaries for these closures are located on
the DFO web site at the following address:
