Title: 2014/2015 summer/winter steelhead season recap!
Post by: Every Day on May 22, 2015, 06:56:06 PM
Threw a little blog post together of some of the trips Kitty, friends and I did this past summer/fall/winter. It really was an insanely good year. Hopefully this year is more of the same before we see the decline cycle again due to the warming waters from this past winter and most likely this summer.

Anyway, hope you all enjoy the post. Something to read and look at during a boring work shift, etc. Lots of pictures also, if you just want to check it out for those without the reading!

.....damn.  :)

When I get re-incarnated, can I come back as you?

Love the beautiful rivers and colours.

That 50:50 chartreuse and brass R&B spoon is one of my favorites also; once I swapped out the excessively large 3/0 hook for a size 2.

Thanks very much for sharing.

Hey guys!

Some people had replied to the blog post saying the pictures had ran out.
I also had a few people on the forum here say the same thing in another thread (I believe the fish porn thread).

I fixed the images, and even added a few more! So, if you never got a chance to check em out before the pictures went the way of the dodo bird, here is the new link:

Yes you fixed the pics.  Nice work,  looks beautiful that area on the island. I wish I could find the time to fish on the island.

Why do you have to take the fish out of the water for a photo? I don't understand that mentality. Your in water photos are enough proof. Enjoy what you have for the way they are going at the second growth on Vancouver Island there will be more impact on those rivers that you fish.

You mean the quick 5 second lifts (how long do you actually think water runs off a fish like that for?). The fish are always my primary concern, and we never lift for more than 5-10 seconds (I know this because I've timed it on the go pro) before putting them in the water for a good half a minute before trying another lift (if the first photo didn't turn out). The photo's aren't for "proof," they are memories - and I enjoy the photography aspect as much as the actual fishing. Lifts allow you to get the backdrop, actual size of fish, etc.

There are so many other important things you could potentially bash or put effort into (maybe like poaching, logging, illegally using bait and gut hooking fish, etc), rather than go after something so trivial as a quick fish lift. I am well versed in fish handling, and many of the studies surrounding it. I have done my part to make sure a fish is never out of the water more than 10 seconds. Most studies have pointed to 30 seconds as being the tipping point for any damage to a fish as far as mortality or behavioural changes go, and I don't come anywhere close to pushing it that far. If you have some other insider knowledge that can show me that a quick 5-10 second lift will cause significant, or any, damage to a fish, please share it and I will correct my methods to your liking.

Until then, keep on fishing and taking pics how you prefer them - because you're right; the way they are logging right to the rivers right now, I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't enough left to fish for in the next 10 years.

Most guys who bash fishing pictures aren't mad that you're "hurting" a fish, rather they are jealous they can't get them and have to bring you down.

Thanks for taking the effort to repost these, this sort of stuff is the reason I visit the forum. X3 re: the brass and chartreuse spoon. If you've got the owner's ear, you've gotta convince him to find a manufacturer who can keep up with demand. I haven't been able to find any trophy tackle stuff in vancouver in months.

Fantastic!

One thing that stood out to me was that you almost always had someone to share the memory/trip/picture with and I think that must really add to the experience. I guess safety wise its also a good decision.

Enjoy this stage of your life...I remember when you first started posting on Rod's site, in comparison your a wise old man now.

Can't believe you found a girl that shares your obsession...although I guess Rodney did as well!

Sold out online as well-- when I talked to Highwater tackle, they said it was a manufacturer problem, above Trophy on the supply chain.

BN actually we just forced them into enjoying it, and use our charms and good looks so they'll stick around even though they can't stand touching another fish rod... ;D

Just so you know I have caught more fish in one day than you have in a season. I have been at it for quite some times. I was the first one on Vancouver Island with pink worm. My generation has taken the next generation's fish( that's you), timber, minerals, oil, etc. Soon you will have only pictures to fish with.
I could be wrong, but I believe in the next 5 yrs. you are going to see a drastic decline in the over all fish stocks. Have a nice day.

That's quite the statement Wes :(  My guess is Dan will ignore it (kinda like a Gretzky talking hockey, you know been there, done that) but is no doubt very concerned about the VI river degradation you correctly keep bring up.

I didn't, in any single statement, question or challenge how many fish you have caught or continue to catch. The only reply I gave you was that I care greatly for the fish - that no lifts are longer than 10 seconds (as seen by water running off them in photos). I then backed my claim with papers I have read - you know - scientific research that has pointed to 30 seconds of air exposure as the tipping point for damage. You attacked me for photos that you had no understanding about. This reply you just wrote, in no way, answered the question I asked of you - do you have any sort of proof, or evidence, that a 10 second lift at all harms a fish? In fact, it was just another personal attack that I will have no part of, because I don't need to prove myself to you.

The beauty of it, is that you (and I) could indeed be wrong. There is no doubt that stocks have declined, but the last 5 or so years they have rebounded drastically. If we do get a control on the logging that seems to be taking place again, my thoughts are that steelhead are incredibly hardy creatures and will continue to persist. Take a look at chinook runs this year - the highest they've ever been in recorded history on some flows.

I've tried phoning 3 times last week and left voicemails, phoned this morning too and only get a message. You would think that they would have the decency to at least reply especially when I told them I wanted to place an order for 100 spoons. Any way I found another source and my 100 spoons are on the way.

And you have the gall to attack a guy for lifting a fish from the water for a quick photo op? Where were you when the first serious talks of conservation began in the 60's, when Haig Brown warned against the very same things you and your generation were doing? Fishing, of course, and probably killing every fish you caught.

Go after some poachers and polluters that still abound in your area, not after a guy who singlehandedly does more to promote fishing ethics and the beauty of our province than most people on this board together.
Lifting a fish for a picture...pfffft, big deal! If you are so worried about causing them pain and discomfort, stop fishing altogether and join PETA.

You may have well been the first on the island with a pink worm, but the size of it must have been quite small when you have the need to write such bombastic statements.  :P

Simply magical steelhead blog. Thanks for sharing those beautiful pictures with gorgeous steelies in magical places where steelhead still roam in numbers. I am with Milo. No PETA mentality here on a fishing site. Fish are tough. They survive seal bites and jumping over raging rapids, not to say a short lift out of the water by a fish-caring individual.
