Title: 2014 Tidal Fraser River Fall Salmon and Trout Fishery Updates
Post by: Rodney on September 28, 2014, 08:11:47 PM
The Tidal Fraser River (downstream from Mission's CPR Bridge) is open for coho salmon fishing on September 29th, 2014. Once again, this thread is designed to let members to provide updates on the fishing and water condition throughout the season.

Regulations

Please note that coho salmon fishing is closed and a bait ban for salmon fishing is in effect until September 28th.

Starting on September 29th, coho salmon fishing opens and bait will once again be allowed for salmon fishing. You can use roe, krill, shrimp, ghost shrimp, dew worm and any natural bait or artificially scented bait for salmon. The daily quota for hatchery marked coho salmon is two fish per day during this opening. Please make sure you identify your fish correctly in the water first by using a catch and release net (http://www.gibbsdelta.com/catch-release-trout-nets). All wild coho salmon have to be released with care.

Wild coho salmon (presence of the adipose fin)

Hatchery-marked coho salmon (absence of the adipose fin)

For trout and char, the daily quota is two hatchery marked fish. You will find some hatchery marked cutthroat trout (absence of the adipose fin). All bull trout are wild. Please release all wild cutthroat and bull trout carefully.

Please make sure you have a valid saltwater fishing licence, and a salmon stamp if you intend to keep salmon.

The above is just a general summary of the regulations as of September 28th, so you MUST check the Tidal Fraser River fishing regulations (http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/fraser-eng.htm) before heading out as it may change from time to time.

Articles and Videos

A list of articles and videos have been compiled on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishy_news/2014-09-28-tidal-fraser-river-coho-salmon-opening.html) for those who have never tried this fishery before.

This thread is started so everyone can post updates throughout the season. Please do not ask for updates.

Good luck!

Was out in Richmond today with a buddy from 8 AM-3PM, lots of non Coho nibbles. We did hook into one but performed a long line release after a few jumps. Water in our spot was very clear, about 2-3' visibility. Seen a couple surfacing but not much action. Tons of rain and wind made it hard to stare at the rod tip for long.

That was from a weekend report.

Water clarity is good near Glen Valley and 2- bit bar.
Fished roe at high tide, lots of bites, but I'm guessing
They were from the smaller coarse fish.
Switched to spoons and Colorado spinners
For a bit, no hook ups.

Water visibility is ok, not great, but good enough. It's still just a bit too early in my opinion. Once water temperature drops a bit in a couple of weeks from now, Northern pikeminnow should become a lot less abundant. Looking back at the dates from the last 14 years, October 10th to 15th have always been the period when fishing is consistent.

I will be fishing Glen Valley tomorrow but am confused about whether Chinook and Sockeye caught with bait can be retained or not.  The Fisheries Notice issued for the coho opening states that bait fishing for salmon is permitted, but just below that there is a bait ban listed for Chinook and Sockeye.  http://www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/tidal-maree/fraser-eng.htm

Coho -

Effective at 00:01 hours on September 29, 2014 until December 31, 2014 in the
Fraser River downstream of the CPR bridge at Mission, BC, you may retain two
(2) hatchery marked coho per day and the use of bait while fishing for salmon
is permitted
.
Chinook -

September 2 - October 3, 2014: bait ban in effect.
Sockeye -

Was the statement in the coho Fisheries Notice intended for coho alone, or was it meant to override the other two bait bans?

It overwrites the other bait ban regs. That page is not updated. I wrote a long rant about it at:

Yeah, the fishery officers were out in Glen Valley
Yesterday, even they hadn't realized the ban had been lifted
They needed to look up the information.
But at least they were out.

Seems like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Sad that fishery officers' who's job is to enforce fishing regulations doesn't even know that the ban has been lifted.

Its worse than just not knowing when the bait ban is on. Two of them thought it was illegal to have two hooks on my bar rig on the tidal Fraser... And another time on a city tiver they asked me if I had caught any fish, i told them no, then thdy asked if I was sure that I hadnt caught or kept any fish, i told them I was sure. Why not just check my stuff though? They never bothered. Im sure they have a lot on their plates so i do understand. But its kinda scary

What a joke... I like to watch Wild Justice on national geographic to witness real conservation efforts. Not only is our DFO underfunded (dont vote conservative), but that is a perfect example of how even the limited resources we do have aren't being used effectively. We need our federal agencies to work together more also.

Was at Stapleton Landing this afternoon..fished from 2 hours before slack to 2 hours after. Nothing but 4 prickly sculpins (and some other small bites).  Spoons didn't yield anything either. Visibility was around 1.5 to 2 feet. This trip was my first time on the tidal Fraser so I'm slightly happy that I still managed to land something! ;D

Thanks for the timely clarification Rodney.  Delayed report, but fished Glen Valley Thursday and Friday.  Thursday night fished Duncan Bar near high tide 1730-1930, no action on bait and the locals said it was very slow there, lots of risers and some jumpers though, including a few sturgeon jumps across the river.  Friday morning fished Poplar Bar low tide 0700-1000, chucked spoons and lost a fish before ID and missed the hookset on a nice hit, not many surface signs but two locals reported success on Tuesdays low tide with two coho landed each.

Was out at Brownsville Bar earlier today from 11:00 am-6 pm from low slack through flood tide. Lots of small nibbles from bait stealers but no sizable bites. It was crowded when I arrived there so most of the good spots were taken. Most of the action was at low tide- saw quite a number of coho jacks landed. Activity slowed down after 1 or so although there were a couple of good-sized coho landed in the afternoon.

Was at Brownsville again this morning- fished the outgoing tide this time. Landed (and released) a decent sized wild coho (5-6 lb est.). Action was hot during the outgoing tide with many people landing fish. Most were wild though and saw only 2 hatchery fish caught & retained.

Guilty as charged. ;D

Looking back at my diary, this fishery (for me) doesn't really pick up until the 10th to 15th of October. It seems like I always have a few fish from these dates each year. Many years ago I used to have success in early November, but the last few years seems to see the fishing dies off around late October.

There seem to be conflicting reports on the water clarity lately. Some are reporting poor, while others are reporting good... If someone can post the clarity by numbers (1ft visibility, 2ft...), that'd be very helpful.

Last two outings rewarded me with a few coho jacks and a big fat dollie. Also, missed a few bigger takes. Viz was about 10"-1' around Coquitlam.

Anyone know what's up with the dark colored chum close to shore in about 1' of water? I've seen the same thing last year.

Brownsville was 2 ft clarity. Its packed there. 30 people on such a small bar. 3 hatchery coho landed 10 wild between everyone... Goooongggg
Yikes...20 or so people were fishing on the bar yesterday morning and I thought I was already pushed for space. Interesting that visibility changed so much in 24 hours.

Went out after work for the last 2 hours of sunlight in delta area casting spoons/spinners. Didn't catch anything but saw a few risers and surface action, couldn't tell for sure but looked like chum.

I also saw at least 5 boats out with nets; what is open for netting right now?

saw about four people with super long poles fishing for perch, I think, doing fairly well.

Tight lines,

Andrew

PS visibility was about 8 inches - 1 foot

Fished below mission bridge from first light till 9am today. Saw some jumps and splashes, foul hooked a Large chum and managed to net it quickly and let it go. The couple beside me seemed bewildered that I would let it go,

Anyhow didnt see anything caught but a but more surface action and splashes than last time. Visability is at 1-1.5 feet when the boat swells calm down.

Tight lines

Fished yesterday, Poplar area from 9:00am - 12:30.  Last couple hours of incoming, slack and first hour of ebb.  I fished metal, only one small jack for me.  others around me with berries were doing fairly well - 8-10 coho over the 3 hours (6 or so fisherman).  a couple of jacks in there and from what I saw, mostly (if not all) wild.  Vis was well under a foot; not much to see jumping - 3 or 4 maybe.  One Zombie.

Tried today caught nothing (tidal) PLEASE HELP

I can never catch with spoons or spinners only bait (coho)

What size and colors are you guys using?

What technique to cast and retrieve, do you retrieve against or with current?

If current is going towards Hope do you cast and retrieve towards the mouth/Richmond?

If you are retrieving against current (hard to reel) the spoon comes up very high. Or should I go to a place where the current isn't to strong ie north arm. I am trying under portman bridge area.

Please help I can never catch anything with hardware.

In Abby barfishing today viability was only about 4 inches. I wanted to throw hardware while my son had a bar rod out but we had two bar rods out instead. No luck while we were there. Fished about 3 hours and only saw a few jumpers the entire time and those jumpers were quite far out, not in casting range.

Yep, unfortunately a growing trend, I've not done much research on the studies on how this affects salmon migration but I can't imagine it's good.

Novice question - for those catching chum and the odd coho on the Lower Fraser are folks using a 3-way swivel and fishing off the bottom or float fishing with roe?

Unless you can find a piece of still water where fish may congregate for a period of time, pretty much all of roe fishing is done with a bottom rig (3-way swivel or T-bar). You're targeting fish that are constantly travelling up the Fraser River so the goal is to have your bait stationary at one spot and intercept these travelling fish as they move up the river.

fished the last few days for an hour or two a day around Glen Valley area, different tides - tossing things like Gibbs Koho and Crocs.  Average 1-2 per trip, all Jacks or wilds though.....  vis today no change over the past week.

Finally caught my first Lower Fraser River wild coho on a number 5 vibrax spinner 1 hour after high tide in New Westminister. Thanks Rod and everyone for the tips!

1.5-2 ft. vis @ Brownsville this morning...it was already pretty crowded at 7:30 am. Lots of coho action with many large hatchery fish (and many more jacks) landed on the outgoing tide.  Went home with 2 legal sized hatchery jacks.

Caught my first fish on the Fraser earlier this week in Delta, about 12" bulltrout using a 1/2 oz Croc spoon. :)
Almost caught my first Salmon, had it hooked, but it broke free after about 10 seconds.
Both fish were hooked within 5ft of shore, which made me think I had snagged on a rock both times. The bulltrout felt so light on my rod that I didn't even realize it was hooked until I saw it out of the water.
Thanks to everybody for all the tips and hopefully I'll catch my first Salmon yet!

Hows productivity the past few days.last time I went out was monday and it was pretty slow all day and picked up at a very odd tide for where I was fishing.
Was out last Monday too @ the same place and it was very slow as well. Landed one wild jack and had a few missed hits. Only saw one good-sized hatchery coho landed plus 1 chum. All this in a 30-45 minute or so window. Was planning on heading out early this morning for the good low tide but ended up sleeping in!  >:( Oh well...

Are there Coho & Chum still to be had in the Fraser? I would like to try again this weekend as I've yet to catch anything despite my efforts so far.

there still would be the odd fish....tend to get more bull trout around this time of year along with coho but biggest issue would be water clarity with all this rain. just looks nasty the color.

12-18 inches of vis at Glen Valley right now.  1 wild coho landed by a fisherman nearby.

used to be we'd bar fish at least until the middle of November so there should be fish around.

I have a few pounds of chum roe to use up. I'm thinking about going back to Glen Valley along the stretch with the old cars.
Is this area still viable to bar rig and cast?
