Title: Vedder River Conditions?
Post by: CohoJake on June 30, 2014, 12:02:11 PM
Can anyone give an update on clarity ahead of tomorrow's opener?  I know it is nearly 2.5 meters at the crossing, which is pretty high - I'm just hoping for green water and not brown.  A picture would be great.   ;D

Can't say anything about the clarity but fishing usually isn't that good until about after the 10-15th (give or take). This year looks to be shaping up for a pretty good run so I hope people start getting into fish early. I didn't have my first multi fish day (not counting socks) till about the 12-15th the last few seasons. Itching for it it start as it is one of my favourite fisheries.

I would almost guarantee the majority of those fish are sockeye. They jump often while moving up river

River is still pretty high, water colour looks good. Mid river and up look pretty good. Canal is still high and backed up from Fraser's freshet as expected.

the reason is a lot of anglers don't like to post about how great of a year they are having online. Especially because that can draw some extra fishing pressure to their fav honey hole. Some talk to their local tackle shop guys because theyve become friends over the years

+ 1

Especially during red season. Get out there and get at it. Fred's isn't that far off but you really need to search for a school.

Believe me when I say he has pics.... I spent my day on a different river and it was good also... the rain brought fish in for sure.

Quite slow out today. Probably moved on up already. Also you have to remember if 20 guys see 1 guy catch a fish and they all go into Fred's or any other shop and say they saw a fish caught, even though they are talking about the same 1 fish the tackle store won't know this and think 20 have been caught.

Was fishing with 2 buddies at the upper boundary today and my friend caught a summer steel.. So beautiful.

Good luck with the river right now though. We fished all up it today and didnt see anything caught. Saw a boot red. Im sure if you put in a few full days you could find something to hook into.
Guy at Freds told me about the steel. Must've been a beaut! I fished that run and moved down to swing some flies and finished off near the boundary. Water is still too high for my liking but given a couple of days it should drop to pooling level.

Agreed. Absolutely gorgeous fish but not a summer run. Great catch nonetheless!

Guys working at freds saw the picture and told us it was a steelie lol. Also showed another seasoned friend who said steelie.. I wouldnt know but interesting non the less. So why do you say its a resident>steel?

Fred's will say anything to get guys to come to the Vedder...

Why do I say rainbow?:
1) White tipped ventral and anal fins (probably the dorsal fin too if the picture would show it)
2) Fins are coloured red/yellow... only time I have seen that on a steel it was ready to drop eggs

Pic of a "booty" January caught summer run anal fin:

3) Lots of spotting....
4) Because I've caught a few of them now and they all look the same....

Vedder resident rainbow caught December 2011:

PS this is not to detract from your fish, it's a beautiful resident rainbow... bows that size are not easy to come across in the vedder. I love catching them that size!

@AaronWilde - what a gorgeous rainbow!!!

@Every Day - that summer run was quite the specimen! And that 'bow... Speechless.

Thank you both for sharing :)

I was today at upper Vedder with my daughter ( I'm trying to teach her fishing) and at several spots there was no fish caught.
We're using roe ,wool and blades for about  with wool and neither us or anybody around caught anything.

Oh we got pictures all right. It was pretty damn crazy at times. You could pretty much call it that you were gonna hook up every time you got that perfect drift. Oh boy thats fishing at its finest.

Slow and really busy today. Most people I've seen all season and least amount of fish. Also saw two people bottom bouncing in the upper river  ???

every year on the vedder , theres a total hot spot for red springs , i havent found it this year in 3 trips, there is usual clues to where it is but yes this probably is a correct report , when you find it,,,its a golden fishery.  the big problem with it is you kill a smaller darker fish then catch a chrome hawg later which goes back in

Seems to be slowing down with less fish moving through. Only hooked 2 sockeye and lost a mid teens spring in 7 hours. All hookups were within a 20 minute span.

Proud to report that I hooked my first summer run Chinook this morning at first light. Strong pulling little guy estimating around 8 lbs.he snapped my 10lb liter like nothing when he got close to shore. After about 8:00am there was no more action. Caught a couple socks as well.

Wouldn't use 10lbs when targetting spring. But regardless good on you for hooking one.
