Hey everyone, firstly the mods would like to apologize for not taking care of this sooner. Both Dion and I have been very busy this year so the new fish porn thread has been postponed, until now. I have not asked our website advertisers to see who would like to sponsor this year's contest, so I will announce that later. I have also not had a chance to pick the winners for last year, but will do so soon. For now, lets get the photos going. Here are some of mine so far in 2014, lets see yours!

Just a couple of the better pics/fish... also worth noting was we got a bunch of super small does this year (anyone else notice a fair amount of abnormally small steelhead - specifically does?). Some are shown below - 100% steelhead beyond a doubt, as that bottom one was still rockin' lice. Never seen these before (maybe 1 in the past), but between Kitty, friends and myself I must have seen at least 10 of them this season...

~9.5" Brown Rockfish (Sebastes auriculatus)- caught by accident from shore while fishing near some rocky outcrops; released unharmed; no swimbladder issues noted as this was from 10-20 feet of water; these fish are surprisingly strong for their size!

small pieces of shrimp..would prefer sea worm but they were unavailable on that day due to the high tide.

Dan what is it your using to attach your hooks? Give me the run down on what it is and why your using it. Its interesting and I have a good idea why you would use it just want to know

I attach them using 30 pound dacron braid.
It's just a dacron loop, that gets loop to loop connected to the spoon.
I use it because it allows me to use size 1 hooks and drop them back the distance I want.
At times I'll even use a size 4 hook if I know I'm targeting small fish or have a high probability of catching small fish.
It's resulted in no injuries and/or bleeders in the time I've used it, and has a way better landing % due to the hook not being able to twist out (there is no binding point).
I've been meaning to put a thread together about it, but I just haven't had time. I'll work on it before the salmon season really kicks in.

Top fish was a marble, 2 of the jacks were reds and the smallest jack was a white. BBQ two of the reds and smoked the rest. Dad got a red adult too and 2 white jacks and a red jack same day.

She was standing in approximately 6 inches of water there... the wade wasn't as bad as it looks, and she was linked up with me.
Honestly, that girl means the world to me and I wouldn't risk her for a picture or a fishing spot, I've turned back many of times even when she's asked to keep going. I'm not dumb with her, just on my own ;D

If the fish didn't hit immediately after the lure hit the water, then a dead slow retrieve seemed to work. Tight lines.

Waterproof Cannon Powershot D10, nothing fancy. I've enjoyed the camera for years but I would assume it's no longer sold as a newer model is probably available now. Very tough camera! I've used it on many fishing trips both salt and freshwater.
But I'm guilty of cheating a bit. Photo editing goes a long way ;) I take pictures in "auto" and worry about them looking decent after a small touch up on a computer.

I know.
They are sometimes reffered to as freshwater bonefish. Its not really what they are (being a salmonid in the subfamily coregoninae), but they do kinda look like them and not everything is as advertised.

If you time your trips with the tides you should be able to find some pretty clean fish. And I also have caught my cleanest ones through November.

36 steelhead in 2 days... I may never achieve this again, or even come close, but I'm glad I got to experience it at least once.... Not to mention not a soul around except for the handful of wolves we saw.

We spent a total of approximately 11 hours fishing between the 2 days. So, we were averaging a steelhead nearly every 15-20 minutes of time on the water. Don't forget to incorporate approximately 5 km of hiking into each day as well. It was epic, "only" 12 steelhead each for the trip - I'll take that. 12 fish is normally at least 3 full days of the water for me - not less than 11 hours of casual fishing.

It was caught by my wife and I would estimate it around 9-9.5 lbs. I have held a 10lbs rainbow before and this fish was quite close but not as long. She is also holding it almost against her body due to the size so there is no trick photography with this one. :D She set the bar high for me to try and beat her next year!

Loyd Folsom and I hooked into 50 steelhead on the Cowichan River in three days. That was back in the late seventies.
Catching 100 summers runs this day and age is a kudo for you.

We all go through that stage in our lives. I don't fish a lot of the rivers I used due to the low returns. Every one has to get to that point in life.

Not my place to tell other people what to do but it's worth remembering that everyone you hook is damaged to some extent and has a mortality rate attached to it. Would rather get a few when they are coming in and hot than pounding on them late season when they are all in the river.

Well... half of these fish I'm hitting is just on exploration of new rivers. Many of the fish are not that old - most appear to be fall runs. I've never seen summers in November with tail rays and clear fins, but then again, what do I know. Of course some of the fish we are hitting are indeed summers. That being said, I highly doubt mortality is an issue with clean hook sets, quick fights and cold water. I can tell you in the last 5 years on the island, I've seen 1 dead summer run from angling. And yes you see them, they stand out like a sore thumb.
I'm not sure what to make of your comment. If you were exploring a new river, and were sighting fish that were aggressively moving to your fly, you would hit 1 or 2 after driving 2+ hours and decide to go home? I would also like to mention I go "for a few" when they are coming in, even more so than late season. Late season is just my only opportunity on the island as I don't get back out here until September.
And for the record... that last double header was taken while doing DNA sampling for DFO/MOE/BCCF. I guess I should stop at 2 fish there too and try to get the 100 fish they need over a course of 50 days?

Do whatever you want, as I said i'm not going to tell some one else how many is enough. I can tell you for sure that i couldn't in good conscience be pounding on 10+ wild fish regularly. Say what you want to justify it but its just unnecessary as far as I'm concerned.

Fair enough, to each their own. With that thinking you may as well quit fishing completely. It's not like I ever expect to go out and hit 10 steelhead a trip. If it happens, it happens. Realistically, I expect 1, maybe 2 or 3 a trip. It's no different hitting a fresh, moving fall run fish (which for the most part is what I'm catching right now) than a winter run fish. Do you ever fish rivers like the cap or chehalis in the winter/fall? Hitting summer runs in the process in inevitable while targeting what you want.
This is exactly why I've gone away with posting to forums regardless. Always someone who has a problem with what you're doing. Never thought I'd get s**t on for actually catching fish on a fishing forum in a million years ::) All good, I'll just post pictures, occasionally with no caption like I was doing most of the year. This is exactly why I've gone away with posting to forums regardless. Always someone who has a problem with what you're doing. Never thought I'd get s**t on for actually catching fish on a fishing forum in a million years ::) All good, I'll just post pictures, occasionally with no caption like I was doing most of the year. Maybe if I only post 1 or 2 chrome fish every couple weeks people won't have a problem with it ::)

Do whatever you want, as I said i'm not going to tell some one else how many is enough. I can tell you for sure that i couldn't in good conscience be pounding on 10+ wild fish regularly. Say what you want to justify it but its just unnecessary as far as I'm concerned.
No problems telling someone how many is too much though!

EXACTLY!! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion that's what these forums are for! Nick clearly states that it's not his place to tell other people what to do. I know Nick and doubt he's jealous, he does fine on his own! I hear what Nick is saying but it doesn't mean I agree with it.

I can see where both parties are coming from.. Perhaps leaving the numbers out of it might help from causing hard feelings or argument in the future ... In all honesty 100 summers is really nothing special when u think about it. When you can reach triple digits for winters on a heavily pressured river like the vedder is when I'd be impressed 8)

Rivers from both sides. Every single river on either side has a tonne of destruction. Right now they are continuing to log the heck out of a lot of these places too. Even the ones that have required 2+ hour drives on logging roads are in rough shape as far as logging practices go.

I agree - it's nothing special at all really. The only reason it was kind of cool was that I hit that number (and more) in less than 40 trips this year. I'll never be able to hit 100 winters on the Vedder, since I only fish it maybe a dozen times a year. That being said I average at east 1 fish a trip most years on that system, so if I fished it as much as I use to, it would probably be achievable. At this point the Vedder fishes better than the Stamp and a lot of other island rivers for winter runs to be blatantly honest, the winters runs are doing no where as good as the summers out here.

Honestly averaging 1 fish isn't gonna get you 100+ in my opinion. How many trips can you realistically make. Personally I can get in about 40-50 trips between weekends the odd day off and 3 hr trips after work in march on when I feel like going out(and i live on the river pretty much). Unless your guide and take the whole winter off jobless.. There's gonna be the odd days in jan and feb where you just can't connect no matter how hard and well you fish. Not to mention if you get a bad year fish number wise like last steelhead season on the vedder. Mix in the growing crowds on the river and growing number of capable quality rods on the river . I can guarantee you won't be hitting triple digits unless your out there everyday. If your not getting 2+fish trips frequently throughout the season and the odd banner days 5-7+to help with the tough times its a pretty slim shot. Somebody who fishes with others frequently can also lower their odds. Obviously your a decent rod but saying is one thing and doing is another.

Hey Everyday, it is good to know that the Vancouver Island's Zippermouth rivers/streams you fished still has summer/fall steelheads in those system. I used to fished those small streams for steelheads back in mid 80's and 90's.
One for thing for sure, it was quite easy catching them and when the water is low it is even easier because they stack up in one deep pool. Catching 8-15 wild steelheads is not uncommon in one day. ;D

You got that right, can't believe how close they are logging to a lot of rivers right now. One of them the other week it was literally about 50 feet from the edge of the river to the edge of the big clear cut.
I think I would disagree with the drought statement. If anything, it will impact next year stocks or the year after (as the low water would have effected the fry/pre smolts that would have been going out this next spring). Right now, the water is more than ideal for fish to enter and spawn. Salmon would have had no problem this year as all October and November have had higher than normal water.

Yep, I totally agree that saying it's possible and actually doing it are two different and difficult things. I only fish it in December now on my breaks, with the odd day in Feb/April. My average of 1 fish/trip is in mid December when I get out to fish. Years past I definitely had a number of 3-6 steel days between Feb-April. When I lived right on the river before moving to the island, I use to get 40-50 steel a year out of the Vedder, and I didn't have a fraction of the knowledge I have now. Really, it doesn't matter to me overall for numbers. I use them as an indication of how stocks are doing. I keep track year to year of hours/trips/numbers of fish. I can tell you that this year was incredible based on previous years, and I sighted probably 5X as many fish as I had ever seen on any of these flows. I do believe a number of these rivers are coming back... many of them have much better returns now than were documented back in the 90's (I have buddies that swim, and looking at numbers from back then compared to now, numbers are up 50-100 fish on nearly all the big summer rivers).

Mentioning Lloyd Folsom bought back a lot of good memories for me! Him & I fished the Chilliwack / Vedder back in the early / mid 70's and shared some great times.
I remember him telling me about fishing the Kispiox and meeting the guy that had the world record fly caught steelhead. I think his name was Karl Mauser.
Karl gave Lloyd some flies he used up there, I remember thinking these things are huge!

What I remember most about Lloyd was his false teeth; way to big for his mouth but he used them well when he told a story ;D always a big smile and a hand shake. Great guy and a pretty good rod in the day ;)
I traded him a pretty good Superba for a genuine Cowichan sweater about 40 years ago... I still have the Cowie and no doubt the Hardy is still fishing.
