Post by: chris gadsden on April 04, 2014, 08:55:32 AM
Not wanting the Pro FF posters on this forum to run out of things to criticize.  :P

Going fishing shortly and will look forward to the essays from the gang on my return. ;D ;D

Funny to hear Morton talk about discrediting scientists and accusing them of lying. She seems to forget what she posted on her blog during the Cohen Inquiry. Very hypocritical of her to start accusing others. As for her honorary degree she can jazz it up all she likes but it is not like she had to defend her thesis. Big difference. I also see that she is not peddling that fish processing study done with Volpe and Price. I thought that was such a landmark study....lol.  Full of holes is what it was. It is getting close to the return of Fraser Sockeye so Morton has to turn the spotlight on her soon. Follows a cycle similar to Pacific Salmon.

I'm surprised to hear more dooms day predictions/threats given the positive return forecasts for bc salmon this year.  Probably why that camp is so quiet these days BUT I bet they cant wait to POUNCE when one of the returns does not live up the the expectation.  I am sure they are anxious to blame the farms for any of those short comings, and there will be some.  I am sure that will be prime time for her to maybe, finally release some disease data she has been hoarding to herself IF it exists.
Just watch.  One salmon run will come short and it will be media blitz time for AM.  I guarantee it and with all the fixins, sea lice, the bottom, isa, hsmi, ihn.  All the boogy men will be there!

A great article out today form Norway on salmon farming: "A heralded disaster"

"Billions (NOK) rolls into salmon farming. Politicians clap excitedly. It covers up a profound environmental crisis , writes John O. Egeland .

 Published on 4 April 2014 , at. 9:58

The aquaculture industry trembles with success. Last year Norway exported salmon worth 40 billion (NOK). The average price of fresh salmon increased by an incredible 44 percent. The owners are the counting money and the government will have more of the same. It will be more farms and more fish allowed in each cage. Behind the national parade, the industry is facing the worst. Where the list of issues is long and painful: Escapes and genetic pollution, diseases and parasites, discharge of sewage and pollutants, large land use in the fjords, feed resources that are not sustainable and a steadily increasing concentration of ownership. If industry and government clean up, it's only a matter of time before this toxic cocktail has a devastating effect. Both on sea life, fjords, salmon rivers and the Norwegian economy.

Fisheries Minister Elisabeth Aspaker (H) " rejoices with the seafood adventure ," wrote the papers that export figures for 2013 were presented . Yet lice has made more progress than exports . According to the industry's own figures, it costs salmon farmers around two million (NOK) for every pound they produce. Today salmon are treated at least three times a year for lice, which is triple since 2007. What is worse, the delousing agents are becoming less effective and many of them pollute, often for long periods. It is noted that there is resistance in seven out of ten products used against lice. Marketing Director for the feed company EWOS has stated that "we are about to run out of remedies against lice ."

The following diseases in farmed salmon are numerous and complex. Such bacterial and viral diseases can in many cases lead to the infection of wild fish. A study conducted by the Institute of Marine Research shows that escapees can carry viral diseases SAV and PRV to the spawning grounds in rivers. It is also shown that diseases from aquaculture can be transferred between different populations and species. The research has come a long way in these areas, which in itself poses a danger. The development still has a clear tendency : Farming operations seem to be creating more aggressive and more harmful disease organisms than those normally found in nature. The diseases are therefore no internal problem for the industry, but a threat to the ecosytems entire biodiversity.

Escapes help to spread diseases and lice, and to the genetic destruction of wild salmon. In its latest report on the risks of farming, says IMR that the real numbers of escape is several times higher than those farmers report. Moreover a large part of the escaped fish are the very young fish ( fry). Probably the number of escapes is higher than the estimate of 1.5 million fish. Surveys in various rivers show that cross breeding with salmon farming varies from slightly more than two percent to nearly fifty percent.

An increasing problem is the pollution and land use in the fjords. The pollution has many sources: Sewage from fish, chemicals and toxins from debugging, waste feed and impregnation (copper). Just the sewage volume of feces is the same as from several million people. This naturally affects the environment, particularly in fjords where the replacement of water is poor. Increasingly, come reports from local fishermen report that good fishing spots are destroyed, or that the fish they do catch have lousy quality. Many places now have growing local opposition to the salmon farms. Conservative mayor Laila Davidsen in Alta stated that the disadvantages are so great that the municipality does not want new farming operations.

The lack of sustainability in the industry has not been solved, eventhough there are less fish used in the fish feed. The aquaculture industry uses twice as much fish as it produces, and therefore contributes to reducing world food production. As is the concentration of ownership concentrates. The political ambitions of several governments for local ownership and control have not been fulfilled. The ten largest aquaculture operators own about 70 percent of the approximately one thousand salmon licenses.

The list of threats is long, but the most dangerous are still the owners, authorities and politicians capitulation to each other. No one will stop the party and take action about tomorrow. The Salmon adventure has been an after party that is out of control."

Patience Chris....Morton's doom and gloom for 2014 is in the works. As already stated, fish farms will be blamed for any salmon that don't show up as forecasted.

Looks like it would be just fine if the rest of the world farmed salmon like they do in Doc Mortons home country. Looks like her American funders feel the same way. :)

Norway’s main problems regarding salmon farms are escapees interbreeding with wild stocks and introductions of the Baltic salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris.  troutbreath, even you know that can’t happen here.

Read trouthbreath's post.

And as we talked about at coffee with Lew the other day we have been ruining our world one step at a time and we are now doing it at a gallop. Of course FF's are just another step in the wrong direction in my humble opinion.

Of course we appreciate, most of the pro FF people here, work in the industry, have an invested interest or work or worked for FOC who allowed this to happen over the years along with some levels of government which are the true culprits.

If we did not have people like Alex and others that care about the environment and those that live in it, including us  things would be a lot worse. I fear for my grandchildren in the world they will attempt to live in like we have. I may being selfish but am glad I am in my seventies as I feel our generation has lived in the best of times since God created our world and will leave it one day feeling I have done a very small part trying to preserve it.

Sorry for a Saturday morning rant, have a good weekend all.

On March 7, 2014, the BC government began rollout of the salmon farming expansion. Two new salmon farming applications were posted on the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations website. There were 30 days for comment. No contact for the Province of BC was provided, only an email address for DFO which did not work. A correct email was not posted until the Vancouver Sun contacted the Ministry. This reduced public comment to only four days. Then suddenly the wording on the site changed and now reads: “There will be an open house during late spring/early summer and there will be an opportunity at that time to provide public comments”. No date, no location, people will need to check the site daily and hope they can travel to wherever this alleged “open house” takes place. The whole thing looks ill-thought out, downright shoddy, and a poorly run charade feigning public consultation. Is the BC coast really not even worth the effort? If this disturbs you write to the Premier premier@gov.bc.ca and don't eat the farmed salmon grown in the province - check your sushi - if it has white stripes is farmed.

So the Tlatasikwala First Nation wants to get on board regarding aquaculture, and Almo is against this??
One wonders if Ms. Morton has considered other options for this band to improve their economic opportunities.

I am so amazed that people who are on a forum concerning the fragile state of BCs fisheries can support something so obviously detrimental to our fisheries and our environment.

What Chris said is so true. His generation has lived through one of the best eras in terms of prosperity in our fisheries. But the epic returns I'm sure he saw as a youth are long gone. And it's this baby boomer generation's endless greed and lack of foresight that has doomed the environment, our economy, our housing markets, and could very well doom our fisheries.

Where does it end?

Are more farms really necessary?

And we should know that we were the start of salmon farming for sport also.

You are so wonderful to wish us this encouragement! When the norwegians first began bringing in their Atlantic salmon, government scientists pushed back hard, even the BC Director General for DFO said BC was guaranteed to get an exotic disease if this continued. They would never have imaged we would reach this day, where the licence granted to salmon farms explicitly states the company gets to make the decision whether to use infected fish or not. I hope we correct this and protect the wild salmon
