Title: HOPE for steelhead program @ Seymour hatchery
Post by: norm_2 on June 17, 2004, 08:21:52 AM
Saw some positive news in the June 16, 2004 North Shore News.  The letter to the editor was from Dan Jarvis MLA  for North Vancouver who says "I fully expect to see the (steelhead) hatchery up and running in the near future".  There were other things he says which conflicts with the science used to make the original decision.  He says there is "no real conclusive scientific evidence to show that the hatchery smolts are any way different than the wild smolts".  He also points to a 1997 "in-depth" study of a "myriad of rivers and streams in Washington state" which concludes that hatcheries do not affect "genetic material of wild steelhead".  I can scan the letter if it is not accessable on the North Shore News website.

HE WOULD NOT WRITE THIS UNLESS SOMETHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN!

I would just like to say that perhaps contacting politicians WORK.  I contacted him and Gordon Campbell when this issue arose.  I got a more positive letter from Jarvis but the most STUPID general letter from Campbell.  Perhaps I will post Campbell's letter later.

I think we should still contact our MLA's.
