Title: Refurbishing old lures
Post by: KarateKick on March 21, 2014, 11:35:10 PM
Has anyone tried refurbishing old lures?

I have inherited some used ones that look dull and faded.  I am thinking of going to the dollar store to look for a nail polish with a bright colour and some glitter.  Is there a better way?

+1 on the Wenol, wash them off with supper hot water and they will air dry with no spots.

I have a couple that are beyond polishing.  Is there a way to add some glitter, e.g., with glitter glue or stickers?  I am not sure what can stay attached when wet.

Show us a pic of both sides. That could enable us to make some specific suggestions.

see what they have at a craft store or dollar store and experiment.
Or just buy a few multie packs of cheap lures and see what works best and make something similar later yourself.

Where do you buy Welol? I've never heard of it before. But then I seldom use anything but flies these days. I have haunted craft stores for over 60 years and always seemed to find something that could be used for fishing.

I had never heard of Wenol either. I will give it a try. I've used Brasso on lures ... it's not great. Here's a link to a site where Wenol can be purchased. http://www.eshine.ca/products.php?cat=55 (http://www.eshine.ca/products.php?cat=55)

Ian, since Wenol is a metal polisher I would imagine you can buy it from any Hardware store. It's been years since I bought my tube and have forgotten where I purchased mine. A little goes a long way.

Any fine paste will do just fine. Tooth paste should do the trick as well.

My girlfriend suggested we buy super-bright nail polish, nail polish glitter, and a coat of Hard as Nails on top.
Her best day yet - she landed 6 that day on her sparkly "Selena Gomez" Crocs. I landed 2 on my brand new ones :o.

Good Lord leadbelly !

KarateKick, you make your own ? right ?  if the blade is beyond polishing cut it off, save the body and add a new blade.

I followed your advice, and here are the initial results:

Autosol metal Polish is pretty good from Canadian tire but not every store sells it. If they don't have it mothers metal polish works ok too

I use a bit of toothpaste and a dremel on low speed.  works great for silver and brass. silver especially. It's wont stink up your house either.

nail polish remover and oven cleaner also work on removing colors..... most of the blue fox bodies can be stripped and polished quickly.  especially since popular colours sell out fast in most shops here.

anything aluminum thats adonized can be removed with a soak in over cleaner for a few minutes.

also x2 on ambassadors comments.... I used the wifes pink fancy nail polish on some crocs and they worked great...

Leadbelly, if you ever have a garage sale, my kid and I will stay outside your garage overnight to be the first ones in line!
