Before I ask this question let me clearly state.
I support the Native peoples right to fish and take by traditional means the reasonable amount of Salmon they need.
I was speaking to some people (neighbors), who said that they bought some fresh Coho from some native fellas.
They were packed in ice in a cooler. The Coho were smallish in size 3-4 pounds.
Question:
Is there any way this is legal ?
What are the Natives right to sell the fish they take??
And lastly ( if this is not legal ) are there fines or charges for buying fish from Natives??
Please no racialy charged statements here ... just facts if you know them.

from my undersanding the athorities are only charging the purchacers. They are saying that it is the buyers resposiblity to know the fish is caught and sold ilegally. They are not wasting their time trying to charge the sellers as they can't do too much. but if they stop the demand then the supply will stop.
Is this right? NO but what can you do. Just don't buy native fish!

I wonder if a campain could be run that would discourage the selling / buying of any non comercial fish?

It sure can CJ. It just takes one person to get it going. Before you know it, you'll have a crowd of volunteers with you. The Chilliwack Vedder River Cleanup Coalition is a good example. My suggestion would be to some of the existing sportfishing groups and commercial fishermen, and come up with a plan that both parties can agree upon. letters to your local MPs are crucial too.

My father-in-law used to buy Salmon all the time from the locals until I gave him s%#t. Never in my wildest dreams did I think it would work to my advantage. He loves to smoke salmon and does a good job, he has lots of people asking him for it which makes him quite proud, so guess who has the task of supplying him with his fish?, yup, ME ;)

and often times the seller is doing what any of us would do ______________provide for family

10 to 1 west coast salmon was not even mentioned

Minnie-me; I had the same conversation with my father-in-law. Except I'm the one who smokes the salmon ;D. I am always talking this one up to others all the time. One guy I know, who is an avid sports fisherman, bought a bunch of sockeye two years ago from the natives. He couldn't catch any himself. I gave him a really hard time about this, and it turned out that he had to throw the fish away as it was all mushy ;D. Karma man, Karma.
