Title: 2013/14 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates
Post by: Rodney on December 26, 2013, 10:21:16 AM

Between early December and late April, the Chilliwack River offers a productive winter steelhead fishery for both local and visiting anglers around the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. While other nearby systems also provide such a fishery, the Chilliwack River yields more success due to the amount of fish being produced by the Chilliwack River Hatchery. This thread has several objectives:

Throughout the season, members will post up water condition updates so everyone can be alerted if condition is not ideal. Please feel free to post updates in this thread after your trips. We can all benefit from each other's updates and save gasoline and cost of our season. Please do not request for updates. All posts that request for updates will be removed.

Fishing regulations

Regulations for the steelhead fishery differ slightly to the fall salmon fisheries in BC, so please familiarize by going through the BC Freshwater Fishing Regulation Synopsis (http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations) from time to time if unsure. For the Chilliwack River, anglers should be aware of these regulations. Please report violators by phoning 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).

Fish species and identifications

While the primary target species is steelhead in this fishery, several other species may also be encountered. It is important to know the morphological differences between these species so you do not accidentally retain a fish that is not opened for retention.

Steelhead (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fish_profile/steelhead.html)'s life history is similar to Pacific salmon's. It is a variation of rainbow trout, which has an ocean phase. Unlike Pacific salmon, steelhead may not die after spawning. Size range of steelhead from the Chilliwack River ranges between 6lb and 15lb, while bigger fish have often been recorded every season.

Several identification keys can be used to recognize a steelhead. Its white gum and tongue, lack of teeth behind the tongue. Once arrived from the ocean, its body is silver with heavily spotted back. Its tail is spotted from top to bottom and it is not forked. During spawning phase, pink and red colourations become apparent on the gill plates and across the body. Below are additional photos that may assist you.

Resident rainbow trout (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fish_profile/rainbow_trout.html) can also be caught while targeting steelhead. Unlike steelhead, they are typically under 18 inches in length or 2lb in weight. All wild rainbow trout must be released.

Bull trout (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fish_profile/bull_trout.html) are often encountered while targeting steelhead and they are required to be released. Their size ranges between 1lb and 10lb. Bull trout can easily be identified by its white and pink spots across the body. Their mouth is large and extends way behind the eyes. The end of their pelvic fins is often white. All bull trout must be released.

Coastal cutthroat trout (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fish_profile/coastal_cutthroat_trout.html) travel in schools. Several identification keys can be used to differentiate them from rainbow trout. Their body and tail are heavily spotted from top to bottom. An orange slack can be found on the bottom side of the gill plate. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches. Only hatchery cutthroat trout can be kept. All wild cutthroat trout must be released.

Mountain whitefish (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fish_profile/mountain_whitefish.html) belong in the salmonid family. While their body is similar to a minnow, one can easily identify them by locating the adipose fin. Their mouth is small and protudes slightly. Their size typically ranges between 8 and 20 inches.

General etiquettes

When fishing for steelhead in a stream, it is considered rude to start just downstream from another angler who is already fishing and working his or her way down the run. When approaching a run, always start from the head of it and work your way down so other anglers can have a chance to try it too. If other anglers are already fishing at a spot where you want to fish, then you should either move to a different spot or talk to them first. More likely than not, other anglers do not mind having you joining them.

Water conditions around 2 feet at Lickman not long ago. We had some heavy rain today in the Valley.

Went to Lickman at 4:00 pm hoping to fish last light.

Water was down to 4-6 inches of vis, if that, and a grey colour. I attempted to fish a run with a bright orange spoon, but unless it was less than 4 inches under the water it wasn't visible. Left and went home after 15 mins, might be in shape tomorrow, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Water clouded up considerably more after you left and was down to maybe a little better than a foot half hour later .
As for the hat , sorry I tend to tune out all things hockey as I'm more of a football watcher .

How is the condition today?
It spiked up yesterday afternoon and got pretty brown by the time i left about 3:15 or so . It peaked late last night and has been dropping since then . So with out having had a look I'm assuming it is probably a little better then when I left and improving today as there is no rain today.

For those of you who stayed home, ya missed out ;) was coloured up but still 2 feet or so of visibility. Managed a wild buck around 8 pounds but only fish I saw or heard of. Nice day to be out though!

curious, as most of the time folks use float gear...

where do you use spoons on the vedder?  I like chucking spoons and spinners to mix things up, but didn't thikn it was the best idea on the vedder.

I use spoons anywhere where you typically would. I like the upper river, but the lower has great runs for it too. Anything that is moving fast enough to get a spoon kicking, but not too fast to make it rise up is perfect. Swing spoons for the best result.

Was the 6-12" visibility at lower river, mid river (rapids), or lower (below Crossing Bridge)? Looks like my first trip planned tomorrow will be toasted.

I don’t often post Vedder-Chilliwack water conditions but making an exception now because I’m interested in what may, or may not happen, fish wise, in the next few days.   The early run catch of hatchery fish thus far appears very poor; that, or anglers are not reporting their catches :)   The possibility of poor hatchery returns this year has been discussed here on this forum in the past.
Water conditions over the next few days will be optimal for catching whatever is present in this system.  The recent higher and more turbid water conditions are subsiding and I predict the water tomorrow will be ideal; early this afternoon in the Lickman Road area the water was very fishable and several anglers were working it.
I will not be angling but I sure want to know what’s out there.

Fishing has been very slow. Fished lots of prime water with very good bait. Nothing but Dolly's to show so far. Typically would have at least got my first by now. Really seems like u need to win the lotto to hook up.

In the greater picture is a good turn out of anglers on a popular river the problem or is it the fact the fish aren't returning... Yet...

Perhaps the upcoming abundance of precipitation shall really start the steelhead season on all parts of the river.

(http://i.imgur.com/dk8mNsb.jpg) Lower about mid afternoon, fished all the slack water you can handle with very big and bright presentations, no takers even in a run i saw a riser believe it or not. Havent even seen a fish landed in 6 trips. Lets hope they are in there now just hiding in this nasty water.

Blanked again but saw my first one of the season landed, a nice bright fish, the angler said he lost 2 before getting his hatchery,he told me did not start fishing until 11.

What a lovely spring like day, 11 celsius with the river very crowded of course being a Friday.

At least I now know what they look like. :P

Well... I wussed out this whole week because of the 20km+ winds (equals cold), also since I ran into a deer in November and am car-less, I would have had to rent a car as well...but the thought "I should have gone out" crosses my mind each day.

This may be a case of: "it's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't"

Time to dust of the heavy gear!!

I was being serious. I could care less if people fish the Vedder...

If you dont have good tires or chains, have fun finding a pullout in the upper. The main roads are good, but the side roads and parking lots in the lower are brutal. They've started plowing and we have 6 inches of snow at my house by peach. Probably more up the valley. All that snow will be pushed to the sides

Lots of large snow drifts, I bailed a couple times on the river today cause everything looks level even if there is a dip or hill.

Roads are bad again, getting packed and still snowing lots. Suppose to keep going till about 10 tonight looking at weather maps so we'll probably have close to a foot or more!

Thanks for the info. My Son and I are heading out tomorrow, carefully. Cheers

If you don't have a truck with 4x4 and good tires, please stick to the lower.

Buddy and I went up for a drive to check out the upper and "parking situations" for fishing tomorrow. There were people pulling over at tamihi and walking to their houses, we served as a taxi for a bit so they didn't have to walk the couple km's up the hill. Every upper river pull-out was at least 14 inches deep in heavy snow, and the road was bad. If they plow the upper will be extremely hard to park in tomorrow.

15 inches of snow at my house in sardis, huge snow banks tonight that I witnessed multiple cars stuck in and pushed quite a few people out. Plows are going and roads around town are getting better, but if I owned a car and not a 4x4 with good tires I wouldn't go anywhere near above OTW.

The water was low and clear already.

Good luck tomorrow, and please drive sensibly to anyone heading out. So many people tail-gating us and driving way too fast. Lots of Chilliwack Lake road is sheets of ice, so stopping distance is not good especially on the hills.

Water is low and clear, and as drh can attest the fish are liking it!

You should have no problem parking a sedan on any part of the river now. My city slicker fish-mobile did just fine.

I was out for the day today and when I left the river was turning from Greenish Silt to brownish. Got no fish today. Didn't hear or talk to anyone that did. Going to take a few days off the river, I don't think it will be very fishable for a while if the rain continues. Getting lots of Dark green Silt from the snow melt mixed in with the mud from the clay banks. Should be good when it clears hopefully.

I went Thursday too. With all the high water, I thought the fish would travel and time to fish pocket water in the rapids. I picked the right pocket water to start. The only problem is by the time I got there, there was already a guy there and he was cleaning his priced catch when I got there. Sigh. No other fish sightings for the rest of the day. Amazing this level of water and not seeing more fish hooked. A slow year to be sure.

@skitterbug you can check the water levels here:
http://www.wateroffice.ec.gc.ca/graph/graph_e.html?stn=08MH001

you'll see a huge crest in the chart right now. When that tapers down fishing will be good.

You could probably find some water with good vis in the upper river, but it's tough fishing with such a strong flow. You might be able to target some pocket water.

If you know where to go.
 But!
If your unsure; you might just be washing your gear.
An interweb chat says there's a chance but unless you get out enough; knowing where to go won't help much.
However!!!  Those that know, Do!!
How much gas do you want to spend/waste on the experience/learning  curve?
Good luck on your decision.
It costs me an hour plus gas plus tolls.
If I lived closer I'd be fishing.

Thanks for the advice. I have been steelheading for 20+ years. So I know where they are generally at different water levels. Now at this level, fishing slow seams at the edge of fast water, or the shallow & slow tail out (due to coloured water and fish feel safer to stay closer to shore), as well as the pockets in rapids (as the fish are travelling at higher water), plus slower side channels are going to be good. But this year being so slow, doesn't matter what skill and knowledge, it is more important to know that there are fish around, LOL. It is all part of the observation game of steelheading. If the water is optimal and lots of fishermen but very few catch on the river, it indicates very little fish. I generally make a call to Fred's to check # of weigh-in to gauge the fish density in the river. But I will go fishing if the weather is good. Fish or no fish, you have to treat steelheading a way of life, not meat collection like you do with salmon.

Good tips Liketofish

Even though it's my first year west coast steelheading and the amount of time and effort I've put in, I'm going to say It is a very difficult year even for the good rods.  :)

By the way, whether you know it or not, some of us weekend steelheaders living in town are using the frequency of your steelhead reports and the actions on the river that you reported as a gauge of how the run is for the season. Glad that you have a great day on the river and landed the wild ones. Now there are 1.5 months left to get a hatchery.  ;D ;D

Water was gin clear in the upper. Probably about 3 feet in the lower.

Began to rain heavily around 3 pm and we packed it up.

That's great to hear Tburns thanks. Good luck on hitting one on the fly. Only one Ive pulled in this year was on a colorado blade.

Thanks nexus.  Of note: I did see a salmon fry swimming around in the rocks...  My observations were pre-rain as well

They say steelhead are fish of a thousand casts, well that was not the case today as it only took about 15 to put a hatchery on the bank today. Well maybe it makes up for several thousand casts earlier in the season that saw the Maple Leaf DNE and Maple Leaf Drennan drift down river uninterrupted.

Good to have  fresh fish again as it now is cooking nicely in the oven as I type this.

PS needless to say water conditions were ideal.

Conditions were perfect in the bottom end late yesterday afternoon. I hooked a fish briefly at the end of my day on a #3 Gold Colorado. The float went down, I felt the fish it rolled subsurface - but I got a good look at it and it was gone. First touch from a steelhead in 7 trips this season.

At least you can honestly say you had a solid touch. Many haven't even been that lucky this year but there have been more reports over the past two weeks. I had written this year off but I guess its not over till its over. I better check my gear and take some sacks out of the freezer for tomorrow.

Title: Re: 2013/14 Chilliwack River steelhead fishery information & water condition updates
Post by: liketofish on April 05, 2014, 07:27:27 PM
Visibility is good enough. At least 4 ft in lower with a bit of colour due to rain on and off.  But it started to rain hard in later afternoon when I left at 4PM. I had a good day. Nothing much in the morning as I focused on pocket water in the rapids. But heard of good action in a particular lower run in the morning. So in the afternoon I went up a run above the hot run. Fished in the tail out of that run for an hour but nothing. Then sat down and rested 20 minutes. Started casting again and Wham. Float dipped at the water I combed for an hour before. So the fish finally arrived from the hot run below. Landed a nice 12 lbs totally chrome hatchery doe. Hope the river will hold its shape for you guys tomorrow. Tight line.

Upper was still quite high and flowing hard. Vis was ok but didn't see any hookups. Agree that the season is winding down. It's time to go from looking for steelhead to looking for my golf ball. Ironically they are both in the same spot, the water.

Well it was a good first year for myself. Prob had about 20 trips and 20 000 casts. Landed 2 bull trout andmy first steelie. Wasn't sure if it was a hatch mis-clip or wild so I release it. Also given the weak return, I thought might better have it make some more for the return 3-4 years from now.  With April winding down hopefully I'll get one last trip. On to trout sturgeon and summer salmon.

Water lovely but nothing to show for 3 hours of fishing but was good to get out anyway. Saw nothing taken and had a good chat with Yoda who was in the same boat as me as was others he talked to.

He was going to spend more time so maybe we will hear some good news later. I went home to cut the lawn and get ready for badminton, a good place to take out ones frustration of having to cut the lawn twice a week. :P

Looks like this weekend may be toasted too. That is about it for gear guys. In May fly fishing only below Crossing Bridge. Can hatchery fish be retained by fly fishing in May? I read the freshwater reg and really got confused on this point. It doesn't say no retention of hatchery steelhead in May. Can someone explain that better?

Was on the lower end from about 10am till 2. Water was good at first with 3 to 4 feet of visibility. Three DFO jet boats quickly appeared and seemed to be involved in some sort of training exercise. By 1pm the water mucked up and viz dropped to less than 2 feet. Some large woody debris coming down the river No sign of fish. Saw one other fly guy with a spey rod but too far off to ask about luck. He left quickly once the DFO boats started spinning close to where he was. I wondered if this activity caused some the increased turbidity.
