I went today to the Vedder on one last foray before my hernia surgery on Thursday.
I was at my favourite spot at first light, and the fish were there. The water was just perfect. Neither too high nor too low, with only very slight coloration due to the rain. The fish were tight lipped, however, it was hard to entice them to bite. I did manage a couple after working very hard and going through almost all the flies in my box.
Ended up taking home this guy, which fell for a small Christmas tree pattern:

It has spots in the lower tail fin, which is not usual for coho. Just a reminder that spots on the body and/or tail are never a bullet-proof way of ID-ing salmon. Always check the gums, too.
With the water receding to normal (lower) levels, the "trap" came within reach of my long arm, and this is what I salvaged from just one underwater log:

What left me scratching my head is the number of spinners and jigs with barbed hooks! >:(
What part of single barbless do people not understand?
I tend to believe that they leave the barb on the hook on purpose - to increase their chances of landing fish. Shame on them!
Anyway, got lots of hardware now for the steelhead season. That pink and gold spinner looks particularly sweet. :)

That green blade spinner on the very left is mine! Well, I made it, but most likely lost by someone who I sold it to because I don't use that size with that blade colour on the Vedder. :D

I did have a good season indeed. It sure helps that coho are real suckers for flashy flies.
Hopefully, it won't be too long before I can hit the flow again. I am guessing late January, early February.

the spotting on the lower tail is not all that rare and I have seen it a few times over the years.

If he's a good sleeper, you'll be out sooner then you think. Once on a schedule, as long as Nina's ok with it, you'll actually have some free time. Unless by some miracle you start lactating, there's not a ton for daddy to do, until they start crawling. Plan, prepare and you can go :)

Rodney- You have a great excuses to fish. Its the same one I use to go to work every day! -its your business to do so! If Nina and your son want to be fed and taken care of well, you MUST go fishing! You dont like it,but you have to do it for the good of your family. You are a courageous and admirable man to make such sacrifices. ;D ;D :D :D

ahh hernias....youll be fishing in no time...the operation now days is much better than when I had mine done 25 years ago.

I had a double hernia operation 4 years ago, and the recovery time is decent, you will be good to go in the peak of the season i bet. Just walk careful on the slippery rocks or have a buddy close to ya just in case.

I am back home now after the surgery and it seems everything is fine. The pain is manageable (thank God for T3's).
I will take it really easy for a while...I expect to be back in full force in a couple of months.

Yeah, I think so but probably more with a 2 hander than gear but that's subject to change, especially if Gadsden is outcatching me ;D

Hey Milo, glad to hear the operation went well. I had the same operation many years ago and the highlight to that was when a beautiful nurse came in and asked if I'd like a hot oil massage to relax me, no kidding. My eye's just about popped out of my head. I said, Uh sure, sounds great. Not sure if they still offer that kind of service at hospitals today but it sure relaxed me, sort of. ;D
Anyway all the Best to you and its Great to hear that you're on the mend. As another poster mentioned I too have never met you but I sure enjoy what you post. Very smart and very insightful and a big Thank You for that. Get well soon and hopefully we'll meet up on the flow sometime down the road.

Milo wishing you a speedy recovery. And At the Zone, your time in the hospital must have been many years ago. Nurses now a days don't have time to give massages to patients. More like as soon as you can get on your feet without falling over or getting sick, out the door you go.

Yes, so true Dennyman, its too bad though. Nothing beats a nice hot oil massage when you're not feeling the greatest and stuck in the hospital. I guess it's a good thing we have wives or girlfriends then, ehhh. Damn that gov't. restraint and their budgetary needs, lol.

Last 2 years I've hit fish on the 21st (which has pretty much been my first day home both years). Home I can keep that going ;D

That's pretty much what happened. I was out of the hospital three hours after waking up from general anesthesia.

Hahahah Dave is pretty much right on this one...
Last winter season I only took the gear rod out twice and swung spoons the rest of the time.
I used the roe flies mainly for summers this year on flows where I couldn't swing spoons. I'll bust em out in tamihi water too.
But hey, I'm still on the artificial side of things. Would be kind of cool to get up a tally of artificials (flies/spoons/unscented plastics) vs bait (natural and scented plastics).
