I'm new to fly fishing and Ive purchased a variety of fly's from Sea run fly and tackle cost: $2.50 each. They seem to be well made but you can really rack of the $ when you first start out. I have been recently searching E bay for some dry flys and purchased this set and it seems very well made and the price to me is outstanding. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/140851387398?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648. Has anybody heard of this seller or used them? I'm new to fly fishing so my knowledge on well made fly's is limited.

Seems like a really decent price for a Wheatley box, and what looks like some good flies. I cant comment on the quality, I have not used this seller before, but this should be a decent buy.
This is a double edged sword though. I am in no way saying you should go one way or the other, but when you buy local, you are paying for locally made products. Well, I dont KNOW where sea run gets their flies, but I know M&Y in surrey gets locally tied flies. Expensive? Yes. But we all want to be paid fairly, and when you buy from Canada, it will more expensive. Quality is rarely an issue (for me at least.)
But, on the other hand, when you are starting out, it is hard to drop a couple hundred dollars on flies for a really good selection and variety. So I can understand where you are coming from. I bought my first dozen locally, then bought 5 or 6 dozen from http://www.flyshack.com/ Their quality really is outstanding.

I have that crane fly imitation from them (3 actually) and they have caught at least half a dozen fish each, and havent lost a leg, and still float like new. I am thoroughly impressed with them, and I dont mind supporting them. I dont know who ties their flies, but they are great! And, extremely cheap. Free shipping on 35 dollars, and usually about 6-7 business days to get to Vancouver from New York. And no, I dont work for these guys, I just love their shop.
But, if youre like me, after a hundred or so dollars on flies, you will just go drop a few more hundred and start tying your own. Also an option!

I would take DanJohn's advice and look at starting to tie your own.
It's relatively cheap to get started (but grows more expensive as you get addicted) Plus there are lots of places to learn to tie for free and it doesn't take long to get good.
Just ask Dan, he hasn't been tying for long and already is catching fish on his own creations.
Plus it's so much more satisfying to catch fish on flies you've tied yourself.

I've found local shops can be hit and miss. For example, I picked up some custom-tied leeches from Pacific Angler a few months ago (@ $3/ea) and they fell apart after 1-4 fish. On the other hand, Wholesale Sports sells flies for $2 a piece, or $20 for a dozen. Apparently they're "made in China cr@p," but some of the glass(?) bead-head leeches I've bought there have taken a beating (20+ fish) and still look relatively new. Riverside Fly & Tackle has similar prices on, what seem like, good quality flies, but it's more like buy 6 get the 7th free...
I'm yet to find a website that sells micro leeches, but at this point I've got a pretty good collection so I'm not looking too hard.

Don't be fooled by made in China,some reputable company's bring them in under their watch and are good quality as the person tying does thousands and thousands of the same pattern. Not to mention they would probable get a good beating if they goof up.

depending on what company they are using they could be tied in China, Thailand, India and i think there may be a couple other countries that also have tying "sweatshops" (i only use that term for how it looks) these are actually decent paying jobs in their countries.

Don't quote me on this but I believe only the small boards above the main fly area are locally tied. The vast majority of flies in every local shop including M&Y originally come from Asia.
I personally go through waves. If I find I'm enjoying tying a certain fly I will go at it until I feel I have enough for the next season or so. When I'm in a non-tying mood I'll go through guys I know who tie or local shops to keep my money here in Canada.

Yes, you are correct that the majority is brought in. I do know that some of their Intruder type flies are tied locally. I know that Pacific Angler for sure has locally tied Intruder flies or at the least one of their employees does custom orders for customers ;D

Some of us ( like myself) have a hard enough time tying their own shoelaces let alone a fly.
My brain wants to do it but my hands just wont co operate. :D

Me too, but - just over 20 years ago I was living out at the lake, very poor, and was using a hillbilly vise (c-clamp, visegrips and hemostat), and tried flytying by the light of the kerosene lamp with anything at hand like partridge, grouse, duck, assorted fur, even the hair off my friend's kids Barbie dolls and using any half suitable hook I could find, finishing them with carpenter's glue, and all the small flys were terrible, then I started playing with deer hair. Here was something I could get my fingers around, and I don't remember where I saw the picture, but I tied a humpy, then several more, then a few muddlers and they weren't too hard. There's one with a yellow tail that I recognize as a piece of flighting from an arrow. I tied leeches courtesy of my black lab, the muddlers and humpys were the only ones that looked good, but I didn't try to make them too small, 4's and 6's. I can see getting back into it now to make some big streamers; looking through the threads on this board and seeing the flys has given me the itch.
