Post by: nicecoho on October 03, 2012, 12:53:34 PM
 Hi

I am looking for a switch rod for trout fishing.

any recommendation ?    please and thank you.

I have been looking at   echo sr 4wt, deercreek switch 4wt, st.croix imperial 5wt switch and amundson wind warrior 3/4wt spey.

I am planning to use WF 6 line on it.

Thank you very much.

Deer Creek rod is a true switch the Amundsen is more a light skagit/spey rod.

I have an Amundson 1134. It's more of a short trout spey than a true switch rod. I only use it for "spey" type casts, no overhead and like it quite a bit for the price and how often I use it. I use it with an Airflo 300 grain scandi and various polyleaders. Fun little rod.

What size trout are you targeting? After fishing a 4 or 5 weight single hander you might find all those rods mentioned too much stick for trout. If you want the advice of someone who has cast most of the true trout spey / switch options available you should check out Dave Henry's Blog http://2handedtrout.com/ (http://2handedtrout.com/) there is a bunch of info on there. If I was going to buy a switch for trout I would look for something that casts under 300 grains; this guys makes some well regarded ones http://www.andersoncustomrods.com/rods.htm (http://www.andersoncustomrods.com/rods.htm) and the new Redington Prospector 4 weight might fit the bill http://www.redington.com/fly-fishing-rods/prospector/ (http://www.redington.com/fly-fishing-rods/prospector/).

I am going after 15 - 20" trout in the river. is it still too much of rod?

I am looking for a something that I can have fun cathing those size trout. and able to cast overhead and roll cast.

Thank you very much

im not sure what companies offer them but i know there is at least a couple that do. Google around and find some 2 & 3 wt trout spey rods. Those should be perfect for fish to 20" but yes a 4wt would also be a great fit. I wanna get my hands on a small 3 or 4 wt spey for Thompson bows cause it should be great fun and still plenty of stick if you hit the odd bigger one

a big one in the thompson james? theres none of those  ::)  ;)

The TFO Deerk creek switch  11' 4wt would be a great stick for your needs, those are probobly the best bang for your buck imo, cheers, austyn
