The Tidal Fraser River is open for coho salmon fishing on October 6th, 2012. Once again, this thread is designed to let members to provide updates on the fishing and water condition throughout the season.
Regulations
Please note that coho salmon fishing is closed and a bait ban for salmon fishing is in effect until October 5th.
Starting on October 6th, coho salmon fishing opens and bait ban will be lifted. The daily quota for hatchery marked coho salmon is two fish per day during this opening. Please make sure you identify your fish correctly in the water first. All wild coho salmon have to be released.
For trout and char, the daily quota is two hatchery marked fish. You will find some hatchery marked cutthroat trout. All bull trout are wild. Please release all wild cutthroat and bull trout carefully.
The above is just a rough summary of the regulations, so you MUST check the Tidal Fraser River fishing regulations before heading out as it may change from time to time.

-
Are 2 adult hatchery coho allowed to be retained tomorrow in the lower Fraser? From Steveston to Mission.
-
Yes ............... 2 per day

From what I've read on these forums and video's it seems bar fishing is the preferred method for coho in the lower fraser. What are the chances of inline spinners and spoons for coho along the lower fraser, along the shore from Richmond, Delta & Surrey? I'd prefer casting spinners than bar fishing, just my personal style, thanks in advance!
-
Hit the rising tide for fresh fish, I've been averaging a fish every 8 hours of casting mainly after work.
-
which arm r u fishing or is it further down? Are there any seals popping up?
-
What size and color? Bigger and brighter or smaller and subtle?

bigger and brighter, I'm making my spinners out of 1/2oz bodies and #5 and 6 blades.
-
That's what I thought but Rod is talking about size 2 blades or 1/4oz spoons in his articles...
-
I guess its dependent on water colour, the water I’m in seems <1' visibility.

I would use a #5 Blue fox. They have worked really well in the past.

Water clarity has been fair, but good enough. More chum salmon showing themselves on the surface than previous years, which is really great to see. The fishing has not been too bad either.

Hey Rod, what tide do you normally hit when you go to the lower fraser? I was at the same spot as you casting spoons for hours with nothing but bull trout for the past 2 days :(
-
It really depends on the tidal differences. Today and yesterday, I decided to hit the last three hours of the incoming tide, as well as part of the outgoing. The outgoing tide has been quite weak in the afternoon, with a difference of only a few feet. This slow outgoing can sometimes be really productive. It also depends on the location of course. Some spots can be incredibly good when the tide is at its lowest and water is just starting to rise. I firmly believe that if you are fishing bait, there's gotta be a tidal current to create a scent trail for good result. If I am spincasting lures, then I like to have several lures that have produced for me in the past, switched between them for different tides and change spots at times too. Today was pretty slow overall, there was a brief moment when a school of jacks went by. The big risers further out are all chum salmon, which are hard to entice.
-
Hey Rod,
What do you figure is the difference in tide time from the mouth to where you caught that beauty?

Your not kidding!! Up here in Maple Ridge I would say its less than a foot. Possibly 6 inches.
-
Water clarity has improved quite a bit in the past few days. I have not been out for over a week but good reports have been sent in recently. The morning big incoming tide right now should be bringing lots of fresh fish into the system.

About a foot of visibility around the Maple Ridge area. Better than the 4 inches it was a week ago.
-
At least two feet in Richmond, which is mostly due to the big incoming tide I think.
-
4 inches of visibility this morning around Maple Ridge....uggghh Hopefully it washes out tonight and no more rain.
-
Visibility on Saturday was sitting at between 1 and 2 feet again when the tide peaked.
Recent reports have been moved to the report section.
-
Headin out near brownsville to try out new spinners. Will report on visibility and luck.
-
Coho rarely surface in the tidal portion. The lack of fish surfacing (chum salmon) could be due to this week's commercial openings.
-
Lots of jacks this year down there. Actually, lots of jacks any year... What I find is that there is always a brief window during the incoming tide, maybe 10 minutes, maybe 20 minutes, a school of jacks will swim through and they will be all over your bait. For me, that period seems to be around 2 to 3 hours before the tide peaks. Did you see any adults caught? And what was the water clarity?
You need 2,000 posts to gain access to the fishing reports. No sorry, I meant 50.

Some bad news for us weekend warriors. Drove over the Golden Ears Bridge today. Saw a GAUNTLET of commercial boats out for chum today. Looked both ways from the bridge and must have seen 20 boats!!!!
-
Darn, I new I shouldnt have taken a day off from fishing today lol
thanks for the heads up.
Maybe the jacks will still get through the nets, they have been fun this year too on the float haha

Throwing new spinners and some 1/4oz spoons past the Brownsville bar. not a bite in 4 hours ..maybe i didnt make those spinners too well :p tell you this much, rocks and sticks LOVE THEM. caught 3 of those today..its like they dont even move and then before u know it..they snapped you off and there goes your spinner. better a few $2 custom made ones than $6 ones from the store tell ya that much. Saw two 4-5lb hatchery coho come out of brownsville. woulda brought my bar fishing gear but you get some crazy looks with ur 2 peice 7ft rod in ur bag. dont even wanna know what a rodholder,10ft rod and some smelly roe would yield. Leadbelly your beaut picture makes me jealous! either i have terrible luck on rivers cause no matter where i am or what im using it aint working so well.

Alot of people at Brownsville ?

I think this chum opening affected the chum salmon at the Stave Saturday. I couldn't find too many of them willing to bite compared to previous outings. Lots of older chum hugging the edges being hooked by people though. Of course these older fish aren't actually biting anything for the most part. Couldn't they open it on a Monday or Tuesday :(
