Have never been crabbing. Just wondering how to handle crab after they have been caught.
Do they need to be cooked and eaten or frozen the same day or can you freeze with out cooking..
Thanks

Cooked and eaten when is fresh is the best.

I prefer to steam & eat the crabs when still fresh. Sometimes before they die

If you want to freeze them, cook them, take out all the meat and freeze the meat. The whole crab does not freeze well.

Eat them while they're fresh

Ya eat them fresh. As Rick said you can freeze once de-shelled but kind of a waste of such a tasty treat unless you're going to add the frozen crab to like pasta or omelettes. That reminds me of the best omelette ever....eggs, cheddar, precooked bacon, green peppers, avocado, red onion, a load of precooked crab all mixed up and then top with a bit of salsa and green onion and cilantro.

I agree, eat it fresh, but if you want to preserve, freeze only the meat.
The best way to eat is with a little garlic butter, but a close second would have to be a Home-made crab-meat/egg Benny!!!! Make your own hollandaise, and pile high with Crab!!!!
We had the best Benny ever at the Coast hotel in Campbell river about 5 years ago!!! Since then, we make it at home all the time!!
