Title: Greg Clark Memorial Family Fishing Derby At Cultus Lake, June 16th, 2012
Post by: chris gadsden on April 15, 2012, 04:26:34 PM
I just noticed someone reading about last years derby, http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=26898.0 and I realize the derby is just 2 months away, June 16th so mark that day on your calender if you like to take part. I know Nick the derby chairman has things well under way with major sponsors already secured.

Also Nick was out doing some tagging the other day, we will keep you posted when tickets are available. Here is a video Rodney filmed last year for those that may have missed it.

Nick tells me he will have close to 200 draw prizes. If you saw the prizes in this bags last year they are full of great goodies.

Also this year all draw prizes will be made from tickets bought before derby day.

I'll be there even though last year I didn't catch a fish. I think I've got the right strategy this time. Bringing the boat.

I'm really looking forward to it this time. Keep missing it every year. There is a maximum of 100 fish per angler.. how do you even catch all that? I'm guessing trolling with big flashers.

Sit in "the nursery" and slay with small hooks/chironies tipped with worms  ;)
Trolling won't catch many, but will catch more tagged and larger ones.
Can't come this year  :-[ But my buddies will be back for more lol  ;D

Hi are you asking people to release all other types of fish. I hope so  ;)

Yep, that's something should be emphasized of course and the society will have handouts of what anglers can and cannot keep on derby day. All freshwater fishing regulations still apply during the family fishing weekend. You have to release all the fish that you are required to release. You should also release all other coarse fish species (peamouth chub, largescale sucker, redside shiner, etc) as they will not be counted at the weigh-in.

Can't give away all my secrets  ;)
If you so happen to have a fish finder on your boat look for large schools of fish, pikeminnow (especially young) tend to congregate into large schools just off the bottom.

BTW the nursery is a spot where the young all like to hang out, found it when I worked on the pikeminnow boat  ;D

I'm in a wedding on Saturday so I have to pass this year, which is too bad because I have caught some monster pike minnows out of Cultus in the last month or so.

If you don't get over 100, you'll have to pay the derby $200. ;)

So If I catch 100 pikeminnow and my 10 kids all catch there 100 pikminnow. Thats like 2000$ bucks.

I think they put a limit on the number of fish this year after we weighed in over 250 pikeminnows. ;)

You guys did a great job again Chris. You all deserve a big thanks for the work put into the event.  Had a great time out fishing hoping for one of those tagged fish. Despite the weather everyone I talked to while out boating were in good spirits. At least there was no wind which is a big bonus to me when out fishing. Even walked away with some hard currency. :)

Well done, what a wet miserable day but I believe the derby did go well and was lots of fun too. I had to leave for the Island shortly after the derby to have a dedication service at my dad's church for some stain glass windows we had installed soii did not get a chance to give a brief update. George or Rod are going to post the winners as they have the sheeets or George has as well as more pictures. I put some up on the FVSS facebook page before I left, will get more there later.

I am still on Vancouver Island but I have the derby sheets and we had 153 differnt anglers bring in 805 pike minnows for an average of 5.26 fish per angler. Two anglers one on this forum  ;D had 75 fish each. There was 2 specially tagged fish caught and they each won $250. As well there was 3 tags brought in that were tagged by other agencies and they recieved $25 each.

A total of $2685 of money was given out $236 more than last year's derby.

Thanks to all the FVSS derby organizers, guides, those that brought displays, and the donators all too numerous to mention. Special thanks to director Nick, Frank, Ev and Dean from Great River Fishing Adventures for organizing all the guides and their boats.

I was away right after the derby so did not have all the info but just got home and I see it was caught by Devan Orr with a fish weighing 3.76 lbs.
