Title: 2012 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information
Post by: Rodney on March 08, 2012, 10:44:20 AM

2012's Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley catchable rainbow trout stocking starts today, March 8th. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/gofishbc/index.html), is responsible for stockings of these fish between March and June, September and November, so fishing is expected to be excellent during these months. These angling opportunities are fantastic for families, youth and entry-level anglers due to high catch success rate.

As usual, we will once again be providing regular stocking reports to keep you updated so you can plan your next weekend fishing trip better. Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley lake stocking reports will be available in this thread as well as on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html). You can also find archived reports of catchable rainbow trout stockings across BC in this section of the website (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking.html).

WHERE TO FISH?

Here are some of the lakes in Region Two that are stocked with rainbow trout.

Nevermind, stockings are delayed. ::) We were just at Lafarge Lake and put a couple of scoops into the lake but they did not respond well after 30 minutes. Staff have decided to return them to the hatchery and will try again soon. Sorry for spreading the fishing bug too early. ;D

Hatchery water temp was 3C, lake water temp was 7C. Temperature shock was a factor, but they should have recovered after awhile, so the hatchery did not want to risk it if other factors are involved.

Just an update for those who are interested. The problem was indeed the differences in water temperatures so the hatchery took some precautions by postponing the stockings. Stockings were done this morning at Mill, Whonnock and Rolley Lakes and there were no problems. :) Stockings for Lafarge, Rice, Como and Green Timbers Lakes will resume later next week.

I just got a myself an ultralight spinning rod, so I'm excited to play with it. Even without re-stocking there has to be tons of fish left from last year. I was fishing Rice and can't really see how the 2000 trout stocked at the end were all taken out as the weather got pretty bad immediately after the re-stocking in November.

Would the water still be too cold for them to be biting? I guess only one way to find out.

I find that I usually deep hook most of them using bait (they don't seem to chase after spinners/spoons like alpine lake trout), so I take them home. I don't find them to taste bad, just wondering if the flesh would be better after 4 months in cold water?

I remember fly fishing Rice the day they stocked it for the first time of the year. I fished it before the truck came, and the trout I caught were darker in color and tasted really good, so yes.

Does anyone know on Rice Lake, if there is a weir on the outlet to Rice Creek so the rainbows can not leave the lake?

When I used to volunteer at the hatchery years ago they used to stock Coho fry into Rice Lake and then they put a trap on Rice Creek to check number and condition of coho smolts going to the ocean (Rice Creek flows into the Seymour River) - I remember going to check the trap several times. Rice Creek produced some very nice coho smolts and was a good rearing area for them. However we also observed in our trap shortly after a rainbow stocking in Rice Lake that a bunch of rainbows would outmigrate out of the lake down the creek. We were told at the time that there were plans to put a weir on the outlet of Rice Creek at the Lake to prevent this. But I am not sure if anything ever came of this? Does anyone know?

Hey Rod just wondering if you know when the lakes near Harrison will be stocked, mainly Deer and Hicks.

Thanks for any info.
Title: Re: 2012 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information

Speyfitter, I seem to recall a conversation about this when I was volunteering at the hatchery over ten years ago but can't remember exactly what the answer was. I'd check with the Seymour Salmon Hatchery as they would be the ones working on this with the Ministry of Environment.

Jeff, I'm not sure. I'm usually only given information one week prior to the stockings, but the hatchery may have information on their long term plan so you might want to phone them up. If I remember correctly, stockings at Deer and Hicks Lakes near Harrison usually happen in late spring, early summer.

Rod you and I probably had that conversation about ten years ago as I did work there as well for a year in 2002.
I also mentioned it as a volunteer before working there to ministry staff but I never heard what came of it. I did find out that there is one lake in the chilliwack watershed where it may also occur but I can not recall which lake.

Seems odd to stock the lake when the park/gate isn't really open for another 3weeks.

I'm not sure, will ask when I get a chance next time.

And yes, the gate will remain closed until April 1st.

No stockings are planned for this week but some are for next week.

Once every two to four weeks, depending on the time of the year.

Take a look at past stocking dates to get a better idea.

Now that I live near Deer lake in Burnaby and looking at the stocking data, seems strange that the lake was only stocked once in July 2011 (1000) and nothing since while smaller lakes like Lafarge get multiple stockings even within a single month  ???

They just stocked Rice today. Super fun.. they were actually taking spinners. I forgot how much fun spinning was. Then the bites cooled off and I finally got to try retrieving a fly with a bubble float. Been meaning to do it for a while. Almost one every cast.

Bait under a float, which usually works there didn't at all today.

I actually caught one that had been in the lake for a while on a spinner. Different coloration. I thought it was a cutthroat for a second. There were some decent sized fish, fun on my ultralight rod and reel.  ;D

Numbers for this week's stockings are available now:

http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html

I was at Buntzen briefly yesterday, just taking a look but did not see any surface activity except one jump along the eastern shoreline. Perhaps it is still too cold?

Lafarge and Como Lakes are still producing well for those who are taking advantage of this weekend's good weather. ;) Green Timbers is not bad too from what I have heard. Rice and Mill are probably not bad either.

There is a road bike race happening on Saturday along the road through Golden Ears Park in case anyone is considering going up to Mike Lake. The road is open for vehicle traffic but expect some delays.

checking Rod's updates are good however if you call the hatchery directly they can tell you what days of the week certain lakes will be stocked. the lady that answers the phone usually doesnt know the amount of fish but are we going to not go because only 500 were put in instead of 1500 ?? i doubt it

ynot - I have never been told that when i call, perhaps you call to often lol  ;)

seriously thought once the lake has been stocked once there is always some fish there, yes fishing may be faster and better right after a stocking but thats not always the case. I have had days with over 100 fish and i have had days where i only get a few whether its the week of the stocking or not. I have never been skunked though on either of the urban lakes that i frequent until the interior starts to thaw  ;D

HOOK - might be hitting Lafarge this sunday to test out the new boat and catch some shakers

FYI, if you are looking for updates on stockings that have been done, then this website and gofishbc.com have the information for you. If you are looking for upcoming stocking plans, then the best way is to phone the hatchery directly as they have a tentative plan. Occasionally, hatcheries will let me know a week in advance which lakes they plan to release fish at. When that happens, the information is usually posted here. If you don't see anything posted, it means I have not received anything, so asking is no better than not asking, you'll still get the same answer, which is no answer until I receive an answer, from the hatchery.

With that being said, FWR does offer a premium membership that costs $150/yr and at that price I'll phone the hatchery for you when you have a question. Your answer is delivered in a customized html email with coloured background and font of your choice. Sign up now as space is limited (there are only 9 spots left, as Fish Assassin has already received one in exchange of ten meals at MacDonalds which I have not seen yet). :)

No catchable rainbow trout stockings have been scheduled this week in the Lower Mainland. The hatchery is busy doing stockings at interior lakes.

Water temps seem a little wonky  ???

Deer Lake in Burnaby has the coldest June water temp?

And how the heck is Alice Lake warmer then the average temperature outside?

Yep. I'm not totally sure those temperatures given to me are accurate so trying to find out if they need to be corrected.
