Title: Where can one buy anise extract?
Post by: silver ghost on March 02, 2012, 01:11:55 AM
Believe it or not this stuff is harder to find than I thought. I'm not looking for the actual fishing scent, as it is too sticky/oily. I want to buy extract in pure liquid form [usually comes clear]. I have tried: Safeway, whole foods market, superstore, shoppers, london drugs, zellers, wal mart, as well as a few local tackle shops all to no avail. I could buy it online from a variety of different places, but thought i'd ask the board to see if anyone knows of a place where they sell it to avoid paying more for the shipping than the extract itself!

much appreciated!

I‘d call some of the more holistic health food stores.  Here in Regina Old Fashioned Foods has essential oils - there should be about 100 places like that in Van..  A friend showed me a bait he‘d fixed with anise and coconut years ago and he used licourice extract from Safeway - one of those little 2 or 3 oz bottles from the spice section, Mcormics or Nutty Club or something like that.  When I used Anise in bait I just bought a bag of whole anise at the Asian grocery and powdered it in a coffee grinder.

You have to go to the pharmacy department of London Drugs and they can do a special order for you.

Thanks guys, I'll look today. Save on is the only grocery store I haven't tried...hopefully they have it! I don't live near chilliwack or a bosa foods so I will give a health food store a go!

If you're in Vancouver, try Gourmet Warehouse (Hastings at Clark).

Also, Asian food stores might have the extract.  They definitely will have dried whole Anise.  You could just throw a few cloves into the bait marinade, should give it the same scent.

Be careful what you ask for as I went into one drug store and asked if they had Anise oil and the pharmacist said no they dont but they do have preperation H. I of course laughed my butt off and he looked puzzeled.   ;D ;D

From what I hear, steelhead love 'sweet scents'. Commercially available Jensen eggs come bathing in the stuff!

I put it on whatever i'm using, just to make the lure/artificial that much more attractive. And based on today's trip, it definitely does not scare fish away  ;)

A lot of the commercially available oils, like krill, contain anise.  Some species of fish go crazy for it.

Wal mart in the USA carries huge bottles for $3 each. not sure the volume but i remember it being twice the size of bottles up here and half the price so thats a no brainer. i usually grab some every couple trips i go down for curing roe.

I started using the star anise from the Viet grocery for financial reasons.  I already had one coffee grinder for bait exclusively and the bag of anise that cost me about $8 lasted for years.  I suppose if you used oil to suspend it you could make up squeeze bottles in whatever concentration you wanted.  I used it in boilies so just powdered a handfull for each 5 lb or so of basemix.

I use that (nuoc mam) in groundbait (illegal in BC) as well as some kind of hotsauce and something sweet like molasses or fruit drink crystals.  For hookbaits and the dips I soak them in pineapple is my favourite though tutti-frutti and scopex (like butter for popcorn) are good catchers as well.  I suppose when you‘re trying to find what turns any species of fish on once you step outside the box of naturals the sky‘s the limit.  When I read that carp would swim behind geese waiting for them to poop I made boilies out of goose dung and the results were spectacular but no way in hell will I ever do it again.   I use  a lot of commercial baits now but there is extra satisfaction in catching on home made baits.
