Title: Commercial fishing.......................
Post by: absolon on February 25, 2012, 09:02:20 AM
Incredible!

An inquiry into the UK's largest fishing scandal has uncovered "serious and organised" criminality by Scottish trawlermen and fish processors in an elaborate scam to illegally sell nearly £63m of undeclared fish............

this is one of my pet peeves, and also ties into another ,with so-called Enviro/eco certifications. I ask how can we buy at Costco, Scottish Haddock marked product of China and is carrying an enviro/eco certification?
when Scottish fleets are given minimal quotas in the guise of conservation as the fishery is listed as endangered. Yet more often than not caught by eastern European ( new EU entrentants) who have gained a foothold into those fisheries and are at sea 24/7/365 who are little more than tenders for processors sitting out in international waters.
This is the other edge of sword in the free world market philosophy. Just as closed market or protectionist don't work.
We also have this problem, granted at lesser scale on the west coast.

edit to add

and we also have this home based greed.

They say in the article that these were already successful "Scottish trawlermen" and processors and even the marketing agency was complicit. It wasn't foreigners waiting outside the limit. Sounds like a home grown problem to me.

completely differant fisheries , whitefish and blackfish.

and yes, government was complicit.
A problem in general with the Scottish Fisheries regulators being in bed with industry.Sounds familiar.? There is a continues war between the Scottish fisherman and  EU regulators, over shared catch quota's. Those fish would have been caught, the problem was they were caught by Scottish Fishermen in Scottish waters and not another EU memberstate fleet.

I was referring to the link I posted, but it appears that yours covers the same incident, described as mackerel and herring. This wasn't different fisheries.

It doesn't matter who catches them if it kills the fishery. Just ask the Newfies.

sorry should have been clearer, In Whitefish, I was referring to my statement re: Haddock , The Blackfish fishery is Herring , mackerel etc.

I agree overfishing is overfishing no matter who does it. What matter to me is that territorial waters should be controlled by each country and not by some bureaucratic pudding ,ie: the EU  where petty politics has long ago eaten away the ideals of it's initial conception.
