Title: 8wt fly line on 6wt rod?
Post by: nicecoho on July 26, 2011, 08:02:12 AM
Hello

is it ok to overlined 2 size?

I have a sage vantage 6wt rod and a 8wt fly line.

Thanks

That rod isn't overly powerful so an 8wt line will be too much if you want to carry much line.
If you are casting 30 feet or less then it should still cast okay, but if you want to cast 60+ feet you will find very poor performance or you could potentially break the rod.

Just to input some idea,

6wt fly rod equivalent spinning rod's maximum lure weight rating = 6/16oz = 3/8oz.

Same logic applies to 8wt and "8wt = 8/16 = 1/2oz".

(1oz = 437.5 grain)

it's not worth the grief. That's a nice rod, get it a nice line, and you'll have a much more enjoyable experience. Even if you can get that rig to cast 45-50 feet, you'll mess up your casting stroke and properly-matched setups will start to feel weird...

If your rod is a 6 weight it will need a 6 weight line. The only time you will be able to use an 8 weight line on a 6 weight rod if it's a 6/7/8 weight rod. I hope this helps  :)

you can go up 1 even 2 line weights on fly rods just fine as long as you have a stiffer rod that doesnt become overloaded during the flex of the cast. I have fished an 8wt line on a 6wt before and it actually worked pretty good because my rod was stiffer and could handle it.
