Hey everyone!
Looking to put together a salmon rod/reel set up for salmon this summer, any suggestions?
I'm looking at a budget less than $200, and a noob at salmon fishing. Will be mostly trying for pinks but would like a setup that could handle larger species of salmon that go thru the vedder and local rivers, so I suppose an all purpose general set-up that could handle most things running thru ... Any particular brands or reel or rods for a casting set-up? Thanks!!!

a reel like this http://www.fishingwithrod.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=27044.0
and pick up a shimano convergence 12-20, around $50-80 depending on the sales

Hey, look at today's buy and sell section. The reel is a little smaller but the 5600 should fit the bill for pinks and coho. And the price is in your budget range.

Go to a local tackle shop, explain them your situation and they should be able to set you up with exactly what you need. My guess is they'll have a rod/reel salmon combo at a good price and will put appropriate line as well as give you tips and other usefull information.

Hey noobfisher, i was in sea run fly and tackle a couple weeks ago and saw a nice 10'6 quantum rod and level wind reel setup for around $230 with line on it. I've always had good luck with quantum products, they seam to be a great value. I think if you're trying to keep your budget under $200, you will be dissapointed with what you end up with and you will be upgrading shortly after. Good Luck with it!

I second this suggestion. Go with an abu reel for sure. Workhorses that will last and are easy to maintain. The convergence rod is also a good choice, with a lifetime warranty and is nice and light, you won't be disappointed.
