This will be the closest one to our area - in Tulalip on Hwy 5. http://blog.thenewstribune.com/adventure/2011/06/06/cabelas-plans-to-build-store-in-tulalip/ (http://blog.thenewstribune.com/adventure/2011/06/06/cabelas-plans-to-build-store-in-tulalip/).

How far is Tulalip from Seattle ?

It's about a 40 minute drive North of Seattle.

Haven't been to a Cabela's store yet.  I've been looking at their online website, prices seem to be on par with everyone else .... no real incentive for me ... I like the local tackle stores around here.

Over the years I've found Cabela's to be very good for outdoor clothing-they carry quality brands and their own lines are well designed and tested.

Far from the cheapest to deal with though.

YMMV

I don't think Cabela's really offers anything at a discount. That is not how they attract business. Rather, they supply basically anything and everything you could need for hunting, fishing, and camping. I bought a Cabela's brand tent recently, and love it. I have a few of their shirts, and they are great for camp clothes. I'll be visiting that store at some point I'm sure.

the big box outdoor stores always seem to have almost everything but dont carry small important things. ie  float stops, drennans, good split shot.

Having visited the Lacey store a couple of times, I could not find any of the terminal gear that I normally would use.  I did find a decent cheap 3 piece 10' IM6 Drift rod that I carry with me as a backup rod on the river.  Also, they have a good selection of clothing and beef jerky.  Its a great place just to browse, lots of things to see and the kids are kept occupied.

If you do order anything on-line through them, you can get it delivered free to their closest store which will be a lot closer to us now.

The world is slowly becoming one big walmart. I will support my local tackle shop (Dave at Highwater on Lonsdale). It is sad to say, but some of my other favorites over the years have been forced to close due to big box stores and online stores. Although, I have been guilty of picking up a few sale items at Army Navy.

For bargains always check the Bargain Cave (http://www.cabelas.com/catalog/browse/bargain-cave/_/N-1102576?WTz_l=SBC) all kinds of stuff on offer most of it dirt cheap but limited sizes/availability.

The local shops are always a great resourse too, so I like to give them my business as much as possible.  But last month I got a gortex jacket from Cabela's for $150, sometimes there are deals you just can't pass up.

Stopped in the one in Edmonton on weekend while visiting.

Impressive store.  Selection great, prices all over the map.  Simms waders I saw here for 60% of what they are asking in Cabelas.  Got a great rod for springs tho. And a PFD fishing vest.

When it comes to buying gear, it pays to shop around.  While there are great deals to be had down south, sometimes stores up here can be cheaper.  This weekend I was able to pick up a Calcutta 200B at Wholesale Sports in Langley for 161 bucks before taxes.  The lowest price I could find down south was Daves at Lynden and they were charging 179.99 before taxes.

I agree that the prices aren't what everybody thinks. Stopped at one in Montana on my way to Ontario this summer, it was ok. When I lived in Ontario when I was younger I went to Bass Pro Shop a few times, essentially the same thing. Has anyone ever ordered online from Cabelas, what was the experience like?

Among local stores, Army and Navy downtown Vancouver got really competitive prices on many items and considering the long drive down to Tulalip and back, I am not quite sure there would be much merit shopping at Cabelas when they open. I guess when the family is going to Premium Outlet, dad could stop by Cabelas after dropping off wife and kids at the outlet and maybe do some eye shopping? ;)

--have ordered from canadian cabelas quick service no problems and the item was same price in can dollars here as USA dollars so a savings for sure plus short turn around time due to no customs.
--not all items are like this and canadian site has much less available than the full USA store.
--there is no sports shop in Penticton . just Can Tire and Walmart for fishing gear.

Expensive but worth it.

That's for clothing though haven't bought fishing tackle from them for years now though too much choice on other sites.

Won't go near the Canadian site last time I did my heart almost stopped from the prices.

Last year I ordered a gortex jacket online..it was a really good buy and they sold them in tall sizes.  The shipping and duty were a bit steep, but still ended up being a good deal.

I stay local for all of my fishing gear

Yep, local is the way to go, if there's little difference.  Saving $25 on a reel isn't a good reason not to support your local fishing shop... ...the same one you ask for free advice from.

if shopping different selection, they are a decent option.

Bought two sets of roller sides for my boat trailer from cabelas in post falls idaho, boxes all taped and stapled together so did not open them, get them home to Grand Forks BC and find that half of the plates  needed to fasten the to the trailer beams are missing. The S.OB.s want me to ship them back to post falls at my expense or drive them back, they will not ship the missing parts to me, instead want to exchange the complete units, No way am I going to pay to ship a total of eighty pounds of rubber and steel back to them or drive at my expense almost 600 kilometers return trip, so I get my neighbour to manufacture the missing plates and I paint them. Needless to say I will not be spending any more money at cabelas. If they do not check what is in the packages before bringing them from the back to give to the purchaser they do not deserve my patronage, but then just maybe I will go back just to buy something with a lot of packaging and strip the product and leave all the garbage at the tellers. ;D

I have bought from Cabelas US, I have a family friend that lives down south so shipping is free and i wait for my stuff when they come visit. I have bought waders(2 sets of their own brand), boots(Simms guide), fly vest and some tackle and havent had any issues. infact their waders are very good and have outlasted EVERY pair of other brand waders i have owned before (Simms and Bares)

Canadian Cabelas site is crap and doesnt even have 50% of what the US store does. I get the US catalogs mailed right to my doorstep also free of charge

I had a large Bazooka rod tube shipped to me here in Vancouver-found out it was missing some parts-gave them a call and they sent me a new one told me not to bother shipping the defective one back just to keep it.

Also-there is no Duty on goods from the USA-just a charge from the customs broker.

I try to keep things local, but sometimes there are deals you can't pass up, or items you can't find elsewhere. I have been eyeing a back/chest pack on the site for a while but wasn't sure what it would be like to order online. I'm awaiting my freshly renewed passport, I think I'll try and get it shipped through packageexpress.com based out of Sumas.

Going down there this weekend. I usually go to Wholesale Sports in Burlington, they have decent prices. Some things are more then others, some not. For example the Shimano Convergence casting rod is $5 more then here, but the Okuma SST casting rod that I bought was $40 less. Hit and miss. I usually go to Berry's in Richmond, for all my terminal tackle and spinner parts, but for things like reels, rods, clothing/gear I usually go to the states. Its hard to pass up 25%-40% savings.

Well I went there today and let me just say, you best have a lot of time on your hands because the place is HUGE! The fishing section is about double maybe even triple of what you would find at Wholesale Sports in Langley, but the whole store is about the size of a Home Depot. Prices are decent, but nothing too crazy. Too many people there today that I couldn't really look around and enjoy the store. There must have been 100 person line up in the store just to meet some D-lister. My kids enjoyed themselves with all the animals on display (stuffed of course). Plus the big *** fish tank at the back of the store that had some bows in it. All in all, I would go down there again just to have a real good look around, but as for shopping there in the future, I think I'll stick to my local stores.

On a side note, I was amazed to see how many of their staff in the fishing dept. didn't know what a Centerpin reel was. One guy tried to sell me a mooching reel, going on and on to one of his co-workers saying that it was a centerpin. Weird.

Thanks for the report,   The only centerpin reels you can find in that area are Ross, Raven and Islander, but their price is almost the same up here.

They didn't even know what it was, let alone the companies that make them... The manager finally came around and pulled the only one they had from the back of a botttom shelf in a glass cabinet, an Okuma Aventa.

I guess nobody use centerpin reels down there. They only sell spinning, baitcasting and fly reels only. And most of the staff doesn't even know what is centerpin reels.

Agreed.  The Tulalip store is nice but the Lacey store is much bigger.  I stopped by on my way down to Seattle on Friday.  Despite not having a shooting gallery for the kiddies,  its still big enough to occupy my time while the rest of the family shops at the outlet mall.  For a big box store, the fly area was decently laid out.  They do carry some higher end fly gear.  Prices though did not seem to be much lower unless you were looking for cheap entry level gear.  Ended up only buying some trout bait that was on sale.

Also stopped by Orvis for their Spring event.  They had $25 of any non sale purchases of over $50 so I stocked up on trout leaders.  They also had some Rio AFS shooting heads on for half price which I picked up for my 6wt switch.

The store has a bunch of stuff I could not find locally definately nice selection and hands on reel section. Prices are the same as here on average. I was surprised to find that sports authority (kinda like a sport check) has a good selection of fishing stuff and at half the price. Got some waders for 34$ half price. And a similar setup to my ultra light that was about 100$ here was under 40$ there.
