The chum snagging video from Alaska certainly looks disturbing based upon our local standards and laws.  But if you read the youtube poster's comments, he defends the practiice and states that what he is doing is legal and that he is killing unwanted surplus "ranched" hatchery chum for bait.  Anything wrong with killing a chum just for bait here in the lower mainland?

The same thing for the "spoonbill snagging" videos.  I have never seen a spoonbill before and watching videos of guys snagging them with multiple 3/0 treble hooks is kind of shocking.  But it seems that is legal and the acceptable standard for fishing for spoonbills.

Same thing with that documentary "The Cove".  The sight of killing dolphins made me want to vomit.  But if you step back and view it as a harvest, how is the harvesting of dolphin different from the harvesting of salmon, tuna or turbot or buffalo in the past.  If the species is being harvested to the point of extinction, then it should be stopped.  But if it is regulated and sustainable, then why not?  Is killing a wild salmon less wrong than killing a dolphin because a salmon was never given a name and its own tv series?

Not saying that I agree with any of the above or that I would do it, but trying to see the point of view of the other guy.

I appreciate your critique of anthropomorphication but you are wrong for other reasons.

First off dolphins are mammals and personally I'm not in favour of killing them for that fact alone.

Second, Dolphin meat sucks. I tasted it and has a real unappetizing aftertaste. They are also very large creatures that store a lot of carcinogen from our polluted oceans. Not the smartest thing to eat as a food source.

Third, when i fish for salmon they are going to be dead in a week anyways so I don't feel I've really reduced it's time for enjoying their life.

So, yes. Killing a dolphin is much worse then killing a salmon.

You are still arguing from an ethical standpoint on the issue and allowing your feelings to block what funpig said. He does not agree with the practice but your opinion of the quality of the meat, size of the mamal, or the fact that it is a mamal is an opinion and only that. They allow a harvest of a species and there really is no difference whether its a salmon, a deer, or a dolphin. Legal practices are just that and if they are inside the rules who are we to say they are doing something wrong. I also disgusted at seeing them killed in that way but someone who doesn't love my harvest of coho, sockeye, and chinooks will frown on me in just the same way but I also am practicing within the rules for the said species. Opinions blur facts. There is no difference in this case between killing a dolphin or a salmon.

Cheers
Derek

It is wrong to kill dolphins, but it is acceptable to taste them to satisfy one's curiousity?  If the meat is tasty, then it is okay to kill and eat it?  Moose, deer, ducks, cows and chickens are also mammals;  the fact is a lot of our food used to live and breathe.  Most fish in North America contain mercury;  there are suggested limits to the amount of fish people should consume because of the mercury toxicity.  So is it okay to kill old but not young?  How about killing something before it has had a chance to reproduce?   I am not criticizing you but just want to point out that your idea of what is right or wrong may not be shared by others.  (PS  I am not that smart.  I had to look up "anthropomorphication".)
Title: Re: YouTube fishing video
Post by: andychan on October 08, 2010, 09:52:46 PM
Nope not just an ethical standpoint - practical. Salmon spawn and die. I intercept them just before the end of their cycle. Dolphins do not spawn and die. It's not fair to cut them off early. Most dolphins have a ton of mercury. Salmon do not. Dolphins can be trained - they shows some serious signs of intelligence. Salmon cannot be trained.

And the time  I tried dolphin was in the home of a Japanese family. I was being "nice" (plus I was a little lost in translation). I would not do that again.

Hi Driller
thanks for the link.
Do you need to wear the helmet always for having it tight and well adjusted on your head or the head-lamp style strap is feting good enough without the helmet?
How heavy is its feeling on your head?
Is it water proof?  I know it has a waterproof housing but what about the camera itself?
thanks.

Post by: Driller on November 05, 2010, 11:01:38 PM
I have a chest harness I wear.  You don't notice the weight.  You need to have the camera in the housing.  IT's the only form of protection for the camera.  Totally waterproof.  I have a mount for my surfboard.  Today I was actually out in huge surf and it stays sealed perfectly.

I'm not a pro at handling them,  Thats why i don't.  I guess all guides have different styles?  Maybe if someone that do fish them more often could give their two cent it would be awsome.  I've seen alotta guides and pics of them on the boat unless they are too big to be brought on the boat.

I did, thanks. My only complaint about that video was how shaky it was. It is a new camera we are testing so that amount of shakes was not really anticipated, until I saw the footages afterward.
Title: Re: YouTube fishing video
Post by: Rodney on December 08, 2010, 09:18:32 PM
Most of the shakes seen in that video can actually be eliminated by a shoulder mount that creates a three-way support and some extra weight below the camera for counter balance. The cause of it was probably the big microphone that I have mounted above the camera. The mic is not that heavy but it throws the balance off. Merlin Steadicam is an expensive gadget to solve this problem, it is more applicable for creating a flow-like shot when the camera moves with the moving subject. I've been interested in getting one actually, but at $800 ~ $900, I will wait for a bit longer before I buy another toy... uh, tool.

Very educational for new steelheaders, no doubt.

Its a snobby British TV personality lol. The count still stands 7 to 6 fish in the pool. Unless he was gona whip it right out of water to his truck, kinda hard to bong a fish another way.

This one he hold it out of the water way too long IMO and then drops it on the rocks and tried to give it the glove treatment.

Well... it is quite a bit less than that, as it goes into slow motion after 15 s while the guy tries to remove what looks like 2 hooks (one in the nose and then what looks like another hooked into the upper jaw), and why were they so hard to remove? ???

Yes, I think maybe because the fish is very colored.

I was laughing when the guy fell into the water.

I saw only one hook in the jaw, but it seems hard to remove.

I have been beaking those guys on their videos for a long time...
If you don't see them dropping a fish on it's head, or holding a fish out of the water for 2 mins, or wearing gloves, let me know as I haven't seen one from them yet.
They are probably the biggest beaks I'v ever seen, and what's worse is they seem to find out and fish rivers with small runs and probably kill every fish they touch.

Wish more people would speak up on their videos.
Even make an account to just bash them enough to get the point through.
They don't seem to care when it's only me and maybe 1 or 2 other people doing it. Most of this time I get the response "you're just jealous cause you can't hit more than 1 steelhead in a day"  ::)

This makes me feel so much better! 'Cause when I fish, that's what I spend half my time doing: fighting tangles, forgetting to throw the bail, hanging the lure up somewhere, and swatting at flies (the real ones). Now I can see that the heroes of sport-fishing are human like the rest of us.  ;)

Amazing. I was at rice lake the other day and after a bunch of loud douches left it was silent and I could literally hear birds fly. Ducks coming in for landing were loud. Later a falcon flew by and sounded like a breeze followed by a bald eagle who's wings made a slight whistling noise. And then the falcon started fishing. I caught nothing but neither did he and he's an expert so I didn't feel so bad

Looked like sports fishermen/ladies are in good hands with a very qualified & friendly guide in Jason.

For 5 hrs on the water yous were treated to some nice crab dinners & some nice salmon. Also seeing the sites & sounds of boating around English Bay.
Been boating many many times in this area on very calm & not so calm days.

Thanks for sharing.
Being on the salt & coming back to the launch or dock even if for a few hrs always feels like a mini vacation. Looked like ya all Rodney & Nina ( including Jason ) had a good time out there. :)

WTF!!! Those 2 morons should never be allowed to fish again that fish would be lucky to have survived threw that disgusting display....They should probably think about implementing a test or exam before being licensed to fish there's way too many unethical practices of fishing going on it is a sport after all isn't it? Have some rules or guidelines to follow like those snaggers/flossers for example takes the fun out of fishing kinda sad  :-[

No pliers in the vest, plastic wrap still on the rod handle, when he puts the rod down the reel spool goes right into the sand. I could hear the grinding from here. Ya think these guys get out much? There is just too much wrong with this one.

How would it be a cash grab? Fishing is a form of hunting and to get a hunting license you need to take an exam. Simple as that and all the exam requirement would do is help prevent misidentification of species and teach ethics to anglers. Thus reducing stress of anglers on the rivers and streams. I'm guessing you've never fished in Washington state where on some rivers you don't fish it unless you carry a fire arm, and it's nothing to do with wild life but other anglers.

My interpretation was that the extra hook and leader were from the other guy. Apparently the first guy was snapped off by this fish earlier, then it took the spoon.

nope look at 1:15 of the first video spoon clearly tight on the line a few feet away from the fish. First guy's line probably snapped because they don't know how to tie proper knots and play the fish

Here is a summer run video from the island this past year.
If you recognize any of the spots, don't get mad, and don't say anything either.
My views are if you've been there you know where it is, if you haven't been there you pretty much have no hope in hell of knowing where it is.

Cheers, and enjoy:

Hey Everyday...nice video...I have no idea where this is and don't really want to know. Everyone has their own honey holes that are too good to share. Nice to see a young lady out fishing with her man!!

My comments were directed at those people who choose to send messages to me via facebook and also to those harass me on the forum for posting pictures or talking about specific areas. I have never understood how they think a picture will give anything away, unless people have already been there. Lots of background pictures I see on here I have no idea where they could be without having been there. Even sometimes with rivers on the island there are so many spots I still hardly recognize some areas.

Video is for pure enjoyment purposes, hopefully everyone enjoys it.

Cheers,
Dan

Hahahaha yea I had to put that in.

My buddy Mike was laughing at my girlfriend Kitty, and the laugh was just too good to not include (knew people would get a kick outta it). She didn't do bad, as the steelhead in that video were her first ever fish on the fly (her first time ever fly fishing) and she landed 2/3 that weekend. Some good times... this comes down to a matter of using pliers while it's in the water..that sturgy was in great shape for shore release, the problem was these yahoos wanted to take a hero shot and in doing so, failed to put the well being of the fish ahead of their egos.

How to abuse a fish 101.  :-X

How about trying to use both hands to fight the fish instead of being pre-occupied with your second gopro camera trying to become a youtube star. Then lets carry it 20ft up onto the shore so we can get a video of it up out of the water. Not trying to be a debbie downer but thats a great way to mistreat a trophy fish that deserves more respect than that.

Must be a catch and kill fishery wherever he is.

I didn't really care much for the video... too much bouncing around and such.
I totally agree with you, unless you have the camera mounted in some way or have some one else to take a vid, just use both hands and get a pic of it after the fight...

The guy likely knew what he was doing and the fish that he was targetting in that water.
I would have fought that fish no different then he had, If I knew it was a huge trophy going on the table, which that fish did.
Seeing the size of that fish at the end, how could anyone plan on controlling it? He knew it was a huge fish when he first felt it and that determined the length of time and the softer playout of the fish. Not everyone uses 15 lb leader... I would not judge him not knowing all the facts, In fact im jealous of him, ha. I thought the video was sick and this mofo had some balls.

...and the one-handed fight had more to do with the fact he was scrambling over rocks down the river in swift water and used the other hand to grab whatever he could to keep himself from "swimin' with the fishes."  I didn't get the sense he was too worried about the filming at all, more like he was concerned about following that fish down the river.  I didn't care much about the video either as that was all it was, him chasing a big fish down the river.

WOW that guy is the role model of whats wrong with some anglers these days. I think he forgot that his waders are meant to go into the water, that way you can safely land fish without harming them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp0AaeI2VWQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOKvXO9O1ok

That's how they roll there, the Kenai Penn was a crowd of snaggers. Then I got to kodiak island and it was the same thing, all fly snaggers like this guy.

Awesome fishing though once you get away from them which is easy as they are lazy..

I like the guy with the short leader.  Never have I seen that trick before.
Not sure if this is right, but I thought someone told me, or I read that snagging/flossing/sweeping/bottom bouncing however you want to call it, but swinging your line into a thousand salmon like seen in another alaskan fishing video is encouraged due to an over abundance of the particular salmon and it actually helps them find better spawning grounds?

Take a close look at the BARBED hook on his lure near the end of the video.

Well yeah, you need a barb so his tail can't spit the hook!

DFO really needs to patrol and protect this river better. At least with other flows, they have an excuse, such as the Vedder is too long to be everywhere at once, but the Cap is a short river RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the city, that sees a tonne of fishermen doing horrible things.

A sweep of the entire river once in a while would be nice.  The walk from the hatchery to the mouth only takes 2-3 hours.

I should have taken one of my girlfriend netting a lingcod and missing 3 times, and then me saying "you better not lose it this time" and then the fish spitting the hook right after.

We had been fishing for a while before I got that one so was a bit snappy.lol.

Hi Rod,  Thank you for the suggestion, but I am not really up to speed on why I would need to protect the IP on the video.  I will get my son to look into for me he is a lot more tech savvy than I.

Content ID, not IP. :)

https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2797370?p=cid_what_is&rd=1

It really depends on whether you feel ok for others to re-publish your video/photos. Personally I do not want my digital content being re-published by others so they can generate more traffic to their website, account, etc.
Title: Re: YouTube fishing video

ohh I get it, was being a little slow on the uptake and I can appreciate how you would not want others to profit off your hard work, particularly as you put so much effort into producing quality work and its a business.

This will probably be a one off event and so we don't mind sharing the fun to as many as possible.  I guess if someone benefits a little then that's ok with us.

(On the flip side, what I thought was a fun and amusing video, seams to have caused great offense to some viewers.  Reading some of the comments makes me realize how many bent and twisted folks out there)

Anyhow, I had not considered that aspect of posting up videos to the web, so thank you for the heads up.  Maybe Mary should start her own channel and try an monetize it  :)

What a greasy landing technique. Nothing like hoisting a fish up to the pier and then stepping on his head to show me how awesome a fisherman you are. Is this what we can expect to see off the pier in New West in the future?
What was the thing he clipped off at 3:45? Doesn't look like he was clipping fins - more like removing some tracking device or parasite?

Funny enough his intentions aren't to snag salmon, that I know of. I have met him on the beach and rivers before, I believe he has suffered a stroke and he walks with a bad limp (from the stroke). This clearly affects his fishing.  Maybe if you informed him that what he was doing might be seen as a controversial tactic he would have explained to you it that it wasn't his intention to snag fish, maybe then you would find it unnecessary to upload this pointless video. I don't understand why you would post this video in the first place, fishing must be slow for you.

If it is the same guy who I've met on the Squamish and Chilliwack, I think it's Parkinson's Disease actually so he always has that involuntary movement when fishing.

big dude is now making chilliwack video reports lol, still hauling juvenile steelhead onto the beach, throwing pikeminnow (and calling them whitefish) on land because he thinks they are invasive. >:(

Fishing was slow - very slow. Nothing new at Ambleside. He did not have any noticeable limp or disability and was moving around normally to his spots. I wanted to ask his intentions but wasn't going anywhere near his whipping rod and banana weight. I posted it as a few around had the "WTF" look on their face and had to move to give him space to let his rod and weight fly.

If it is the same guy who I've met on the Squamish and Chilliwack, I think it's Parkinson's Disease actually so he always has that involuntary movement when fishing.
If he is disabled and not a snagger - then I apologize for calling him out. I'm an ethical fisherman and am 100% supportive of those with disabilities getting out and doing what they love. This did not seem like that was the case, but either way, vid removed.

What do these people do with fish that black?  Its not like they taste good. I do not understand how these people think snagging a fish by the back is okay. Meat fishery at its finest right here. Although nothing can beat the gong of the salmon river.

Future of the vedder if we allow snagging to continue : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGEASh9WxXU

First of all, all nationalities mishandle fish. I see every race, nationality do harm to the fishery.

I'm curious to know if you even know what nationality that is. We know it's asian based on the text, but are you just generalizing completely?

Don't be an ignorant person, it's not cool.

Call me ignorant(I am pretty much!!), I'm Asian so I will say it's definitely an Asian guy!!  I have also seen different nationalities go against what we think is right but more often than not when I see an Asian guy I think right away that here comes an unethical angler but I'm hoping I'm wrong!

In some european / asian countries recreational fishing is just picking up and proper fish and release handling culture is catching up with the number of fishermen.

Below the W.A.C. dam are grayling that would make those in the video look like minnows. Don't ask me how I know. They are so big they take spoons.
