Title: 2010 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information
Post by: Rodney on March 19, 2010, 12:05:38 PM
(http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/image/stocking.gif)

2010's spring is approaching and rainbow trout fishing in lakes across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley will begin shortly. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, operated by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/advertiser/gofishbc/index.html), will be starting their rainbow trout stocking in late March. Stockings will take place between March and June, September and November, so fishing is expected to be excellent during these months. These angling opportunities are fantastic for families, youth and entry-level anglers due to high catch success rate.

We will once again be providing regular stocking reports to keep you updated so you can plan your next weekend fishing trip better. Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley lake stocking reports will be available in this thread as well as on this page (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_2.html). You can also find archived reports of catchable rainbow trout stockings across BC in this section of the website (http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking.html).

WHERE TO FISH?

Here are some of the lakes in Region Two that are stocked with rainbow trout.

Anyone know why Fawn Lake in Alice Lake Park is not being stocked?

It is smaller but a very pretty little lake (pond) and used to have some great days there with poppers.  The little fish use to hammer them.

Because the over crowded urban meat fishery get's all the allocation, and I agree with you Fawn lake is a beautiful place to spend the day fly-fishing.

why it is not getting the attention it deserves and needs??

Deer Lake is stocked a couple of times per year. It receives less fish than other lakes because the water quality simply isn't ideal. That being said, there are potentials and FFSBC has designated it as one of the "Fishing in the City" lakes this year. Look for future projects to make this a better urban fishery.

I'll ask about Fawn Lake.

That's great news Rod, and I know you provided the impetus to get that going(Deer Lake). I have had great day's on both those lakes, and I see Deer lake as a huge urban fishery asset for reasons I have previously laid out. My guess as to Fawn Lakes situation is that they feel by stocking the other three bigger lakes in that park, with easier access, that should suffice. How much more is it going to tax the system to stock a few more in fawn lake, especially when/while they are up at Edith anyway?

I called the Fraser Valley trout hatchery itself and they told me the info. they keep having to push the stocking back due to not having enough staff on hand.

and i didnt call at 12:32 am. i had called the morning before obviously  ;) i was still up since the other morning which means it was still same day to me.
Title: Re: 2010 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information

As Hook mentioned, the hatchery is a behind this year due to staff shortage (just bad timing right now). The previous manager just retired and a new one just took over, so once things get going it should be much more smoothly.

In the meantime, the lack of stockings shouldn't stop people from going fishing. We were looking around Como Lake yesterday to soak up the ray and a school of rainbow trout went from the middle of the lake to the dock where we were at before moving out again. There are fish, just not as many (IMO, lakes are more fun when they are not choked with stocked fish anyway) so you will have some success.

On a related note, Vancouver Island trout stockings have been taking place steadily. For those who are on the island, you can see the updates here: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fishing_report/stocking_1.html

Rodney - when they start stocking it will it be done every 2 weeks like planned ?? until the water temps get to warm obviously

one good thing about the stocking being late is that when they start stocking them the trout will all be just that much bigger  ;D

Como lake stocked today ~ 1000 fish.

They weren't on the bite, as is the case usually for freshly stocked fish.

I got one on a 1/8 croc spoon from the dock.

I was at Lake Lafarge for a couple of hours this afternoon.

I only caught 1 (but had several bites).  Others caught their limits very quickly.

The fish size was typical for Lafarge - about 11.5 - 12 inches.     I was bottom fishing with PB.   Others were casting lures.   Both methods working.

I don't know the size at Como Lake since I don't fish there.  I don't like the water quality there.   Too much geese crap, and dirty looking water.

Smaller than what I catch, bigger than what you catch. ;D

300g is around 14 to 16 inches.

I too was at Rice, fished well away from the dock and the 3 of us got our limits quick and more. I saw the truck come and dump fish in. But the fishing was way better before the lake was stocked. All fish were caught on a fly.

I was at green timbers for about 2.5 hours this afternoon, my friend caught 2 and lost one...I managed to hook one. They're about 12 maybe 13" and we were casting spoons....my first trout I've ever caught there! ;D

1 at Como yesterday, 2 at Lafarge today.. too bad I didn't fish for more than a half an hour at each lake!

I noticed that every fish I caught had severely damaged pectoral fins, likely worn from the hatchery. Previously I had only ever seen this on brood stock fish. However I think we're seeing it on the main stocked fish partly due to the density of fish in the hatchery and the length at which they stayed in the hatchery (longer this year than usual I think).

it depends on the lake...but honestly as soon as the lakes are being stocked there will always be people out there. less on weekdays and bad weather days.
Lafarge is a bad one, lots of people there all the time trying for a free meal.
But, there are always opportunaites at these lakes

I was at Lafarge yesterday afternoon with my 5 year old daughter.  She caught her first fish!  :)   We did catch our limit.  Some of the fish was larger (13.5") and chubby.

It got quite crowded after about 4:00pm.  I expect that it'll get crazy this weekend.   I don't think Lafarge's stocking lasts much longer than a couple of weeks.  After that, it'll get progressively harder to catch.

Why stock it at all then?

Is it sort of an "Eat at your own risk" arrangement for the few fisherman who do?

Years ago I used to use it just to practice my fly casting and though I never caught anything large there was the odd one that was around 5lbs.
I never, and wouldn't recommend eating anything I caught in there.
That being said, fishing is more about the fishing than the eating anyway.
If you have to be the provider of food there are far better lakes to catch a meal than the locally stocked lakes  which should be used for recreational/entertainment purposes only; taking a kid out,  relaxing with a rod, practicing.... (IMO)
(but you might have to drive more than an hour).
I do enjoy fresh fish, but pellet fed fish taste like pellet fed fish and that taste doesn't really go away till after their, pen rounded fins grow back (and longer depending on the water they're in), and if they live in a shallow, muddy,  goose/duck -poop filled pond that's what they'll taste like.

Does midday trout fishing suck in all the lakes now?

It was fantastic about a month ago.  You could pound them in all day.

Nowadays, it seems your only hope is early in the morning and late in the evening.

Thank You

Does midday trout fishing suck in all the lakes now?

It was fantastic about a month ago.  You could pound them in all day.

Nowadays, it seems your only hope is early in the morning and late in the evening.

Either:
A) wait for the temperature/weather to stabilize.
or
B) change your tactics

P.S. Thanks Rodney for the updates;
My kids appreciate it.

As the daylight hours get longer, the water gets warmer and the natural food sources become more abundant, don't they have a tendency to fill up earlier in the day, and hold off eating again till later at night?

Just a theory.

I have found the local stocked lakes have certain times during the day when they feed. its usually every couple hours they go through a feed, not a huge one normally but a feed none the less  ;)

fished browning from 8am to 2pm yesterday and it was unusually slow.  got two really small fish at two different spots around the lake.  and the all of a sudden i found where they were hanging out and got a fish every single cast for about 30 minutes and then it died off completely again.

Deer Lake got 250 fish.

This week's stockings are final ones for this spring, just in time for BC Family Fishing Weekend (http://www.bcfamilyfishing.com):

June 14th - Alice, Brohm, Edith and Browning Lakes in Squamish.

June 17th - Rice Lake

June 18th - Lafarge Lake

Stockings will resume in September.

Title: Re: 2010 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information

depends a bit on water temperatures. If the temp at rice is similar to the hatchery then they might start to feed within a day or so. If there is a temperature difference it may take up to a week for them to fully acclimatise.

Just curious, how does either a high or low water temerature affect the feeding behavior of the recently stocked fish. I am sure warmer water woudl mean more lethargic fish, so colder temps would be better?...
Title: Re: 2010 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information

When its warm i find the fish near bottom, cooler like rice i fish nearer the surface. also rice is much higher up so the temp at night gets much colder.
Title: Re: 2010 Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley rainbow trout stocking information
Post by: andrew5 on September 30, 2010, 03:29:42 PM
rice is definitely less central, but definitely my favorite of the LM lakes... that one and green timbers. I actually drove to lafarge once to give it a try as it is close to where I now live, and turned around and went home... the environment (IE right in the city with so many people around) just didn't look like a place where i would be comfortable fishing.

Rice has a little of that "into the woods" feel and I can relax and enjoy my surroundings a bit more there. the numerous bays, nooks and crannies also make guessing where the fish are a little more enjoyable, rather than a bog oval shaped duck pond like lafarge.

Rice has a nice setting IN THEORY. last four times I have been there it would of been quieter fishing on the vedder under the highway 1 bridge! Yesterday there was a school party came past and stopped on the dock for an hour. I felt nearly as sorry for the teacher trying to control them as I did for myself and the nice ladies who were trying to fly fish!

I was at Rice Lake during the week, didn't get any trout that day :(

Noticed a lot more garbage in the area as well ..... lots of fishing line and food wrappers left around.  No real excuse for that at Rice because there are lots of garbage cans near the dock.  Also noticed some people there aren't following the rules and fishing with two rods .... I was about to call the 1-800 number to report the violation, I think the guy must have clued in because of the dirty looks I was giving him.
